2016 Scientific Ballooning Technologies Workshop Title Preparing Balloons for the Next Decadal Author Dave Pierce, Vernon Jones (NADA HQ) Abstract - (highlight the Roadmap initiative) Tell how the work of the technology workshop will feed into the next Balloon strategic plan (aka balloon Roadmap); - (historical perspective) to briefly highlight those technologies that the previous Roadmap committee highlighted as priorities a decade ago, and give status on what progress NASA has made in those areas, and where we still have to go; - (Platform Technologies): high data rate comm, trajectory control, super pressure (we still need to get to the 26MCF (I was out so that may have been discussed yesterday but I didn’t hear what plans the program has for its design/testing, Advanced power system for ULDB flights (not developed yet), Water recovery for payloads, advanced termination systems (parachutes- parafoils and the like) - (Operational Context): The reason I was discussing the “Mission Model” for Balloons is that I think it is essential to understand what the landscape is operationally so that ‘platform technologies’ can be put into context (such as water recovery). - (Instrument Technologies) We would also show the historical perspective of precursor balloon instrument technologies that became part of SMD science missions, and what the horizon may look like for science disciplines (where is the need ). - ( Tech Support to the community): Changes/activities/resources to better inform and support the new balloon user community.
