Data storage and IT services for research at JYU Miika Nurminen & Jarkko Laitinen IT Services
About IT Services for research Short introduction (sorry, Finnish only) Systems maintenance & development: TUTKA, JYX (with Library), Converis, LARA (e.g. JYU research infrastructures), Dataverse network (experimental) Many general-purpose services applicable for research as well: Video services (ACP, Moniviestin), Confluence Wiki, Plone sites, etc. Storage & software support Server maintenance, network drives Research-related training in Koppa: SPSS, questionnaire tools, ATLAS.fi, Excel Consulting and basic platform services for departmental computing servers (on request) Basic data storage services package OSC (Library) as "helpdesk" for research support - will act as first contact and alternative to IT service desk (palvelupiste@jyu.fi) or service-specific support queues
Network drives and websites for projects Plone CMS (actively supported) or self-maintained (limited support) in JYU servers Network drives: preferably as Windows shared folders (S:\) Linux shares (optionally visible in www), Windows shares visible in Linux, OS X shares etc. available on request as well Secure, fault tolerant, automated backups Project materials archiving example: http://imperia.jyu.fi/ Plone-based project pages At the project completion, archival version of the web site relocated under departmental pages Permanently storable materials with metadata transferred to JYX Contacts: plone-support@jyu.fi (websites), sovelluspalvelut@jyu.fi (network drives & storage)
Confluence wiki https://wiki.jyu.fi/ Guide in Finnish Flexible user rights (after the user has been initially added and logged in once) Visibility can be set to e.g. public, available to logged in -users or space members, optionally with page-specific restrictions Also for external users Collaborative writing and sharing of materials, (small-scale) file management, meeting minutes, project documentation, planning... Numerous plug-ins E.g. custom diagrams in wiki pages Contact: wiki-support@jyu.fi
Dataverse https://dvn.jyu.fi/ Overview Documentation Citable datasets with on-line analysis and visualization capability Still experimental service, limited support Some overlap with planned JYX functionality Researchers may upload their own datasets, multiple versions supported Contact: dvn-support@jyu.fi Dataverse has been covered e.g. in ITP seminars of 2014 and 2015, but no regular training is available at this stage You can contact Library or IT Services for request on training tailored for unit's specific needs
Future directions Public, university-level GitLab Version management, groups, private repositories, issues, wiki, CI Used internally by IT Services, public version under planning Researcher's Moniviestin Concept: video materials with added security and controlled user access Possible solution to implement international federated logins: Eduuni-ID Secure storage environment Piloted in CIBR NB. services for research offered by CSC and Microsoft CSC: training, Scientist's User Interface, Pouta blueprints (Jypyter,
RStudio) Some Azure cloud services (e.g. notebooks) available via the campus license
