A Message from your Councillor, There appears to be a lot of concern about potential changes to bus routes in the ward. To clarify, no final decisions have been made regarding any of the routes. I am aware of the concerns of seniors, students and families over what might happen to the routes. I have conveyed all of your concerns to appropriate OC Transpo staff. I am working with staff to come up with resolutions that will balance efficiency, cost effectiveness and service. This does not mean that at the end of the day there won’t be changes to the routes, but rather that the changes will balance the concerns of residents and the overall transit service. There will be an announcement on March 23rd at the Transit Committee meeting of the proposed route changes. The City of Ottawa’s Public Works Department, in partnership with Tim Hortons, is pleased to announce the annual Spring Cleaning the Capital Campaign, which begins on April 15, 2011. Early Bird registration began on Tuesday, th March 15 . I invite you to get involved and help give our city a clean sweep this spring. With your help Ward 9 KnoxdaleMerivale can be the cleanest ward in the City! Every year, entire communities – including schools, neighbourhoods, organizations and associations, businesses, families, friends and individuals take part in the Cleaning the Capital challenge. A record 91,305 participants made Cleaning the Capital 2010 the most successful campaign to date! Let’s build on last year’s success and make 2011 another record year.

It’s easy to take part. All you have to do is select a cleanup location where litter or graffiti has accumulated over the winter months. It can be a park, woodlot, ravine, shoreline, bus stop, pathway, schoolyard or any public property requiring tidying up. Large or small, all cleanup projects are welcome! Once you have chosen your cleanup location, you can register online at ottawa.ca/clean or by calling 3-1-1. The th th campaign runs from April 15 to May 15 with early bird th th registration from March 15 to April 14 . Register on or th before April 14 for your chance to win early-bird prizes. There is also a 2011 Ward Award that will be presented to the ward with the highest participation ratio in both Spring and Fall campaigns. Perhaps Knoxdale-Merivale will take the prize this year! Cleanup Starter Kits for litter pickup and/or graffiti removal projects are available to all registered volunteers. Litter Pickup Starter Kits include disposable vinyl gloves, garbage bags and leaf-and-yard waste bags. Graffiti Removal Starter Kits include graffiti removal wipes, masks and gloves. All kits come with helpful project and safety information to guide your cleanup project. Upon request and while quantities last, the City will also include magnets and stickers in the kits. Sit in the Dark Saturday March 26, 2011: 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The City of Ottawa is celebrating Earth Hour and invites all residents and businesses to participate in the scheduled “lights out” event on Saturday, March 26 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Earth Hour is a global campaign initiated by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney, Australia in 2007. The campaign encourages individuals and businesses to join together in turning off their lights for one hour as a call for action on climate change and a demonstration of the power of collective action for a more sustainable future. Last year’s Earth Hour saw over one billion people participating globally, with an estimated 10 million Canadians taking part. 2011 Civic Events Funding Applications Are Now Available The Friends of the Ottawa Library Association will be holding its 16th Annual Mammoth Used Book Sale at Nepean Sportsplex, on Saturday April 16th from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sunday April 17th from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Over 20 thousand used books will be available at the sale, with prices starting at $1 for pocketbooks and $2 for hardcover and trade paperbacks. Last year the sale grossed about $14,000. All funds raised are donated to the Ottawa Public Library to pay for materials, spaces and services. Admission and parking is free! Local not-for-profit organizations, such as volunteer-based community or recreation associations are invited to apply for funding to provide one-to-two-day civic pride, develop community cohesion and offer free admission. The City’s Civic Events Fund supports events linked to celebrating a civic or statutory holiday, are held in Ottawa and encompass a broad range of activities, including family entertainment. The maximum grant available is $3,000 and the application deadline is March 23, 2011.
