Councillor’s Message I would like to begin by thanking everyone that came out to the Sherry Lane/Brent Avenue Integrated Road, Sewer and Watermain Rehabilitation Project Open House on Monday night at the Margaret Rywak Community Building. There was a great turnout with lots of good dialogue and questions from the community. More information on this project can be found at the following link: http://ottawa.ca/en/cityhall/planning-and-development/transforming -ottawa/sherry-lane-and-brent-avenueintegrated. I also want to thank everyone that came out to our Winter Open House last evening at the Nepean Sportsplex. Once again, it was a great turnout with lots of audience participation. I had the privilege of attending the 50th Anniversary Potluck Dinner for the 115th Parkwood Hills Scout Group on Monday evening. There were many happy families and kids there to celebrate such a superb Ward 9 institution. A big thank you to the organizers for the invitation to this great event and for all of their hard work in making it a success. On Wednesday evening, it was my honour to fill in for the Mayor and deliver a speech and letter of recognition to Sheila Burnett from the Shepherds of Good Hope at their annual fundraiser. To find out more about the inspiring work this organization does, please check out their website: http:// shepherdsofgoodhope.com/. I also attended the City Council meeting on

Reports of interest include the latest on daycare delivery in the city of Ottawa. Finally, I want to thank the organizers who held another successful indoor Good Food Market in Parkwood Hills on Saturday afternoon. Good Food Markets are always great opportunities to pick up some local healthy food. Until next week, Keith

Teen Tech Video Contest The Ottawa Public Library’s (OPL) annual Teen Tech Week (TTW) video contest is back. Teens 13 to 18 can participate between March 9th and April 6th by creating a one-minute video about their favourite book. The video can be a book trailer, a parody, a review, a dramatization of a compelling scene, or anything related to their book of choice. Teens must upload their videos on YouTube to compete for the grand prize: an Apple iPad. The iPad is compatible with OPL eBooks and with the wireless connections at all 33 OPL branches. For the second year in a row, contest partner SAW Video will provide a prize pack, including a video workshop, and have committed to having one of their cinematographers as the guest judge. The video contest kicks off this year’s TTW, which takes place March 9th-15th. TTW highlights public libraries being about much more than books; OPL’s digital offerings include eBooks, online resources such as Teen Health and Wellness, downloadable music from Freegal, OPL blogs and apps. The top 10 finalists will be announced, and their videos screened, at an Awards Night & Video Screening on Thursday, May 1st at 7:30 p.m. in The Centrepointe Studio Theatre, 101 Centrepointe Drive. A wild card prize will be drawn from all the submissions. This event is free and open to everyone. Visit this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bpo-opl/ sets/72157633363823003/ to view the red carpet pictures from last year’s event. For more information about the contest, including the rules and regulations, and to view last year’s winning videos, visit www.BiblioOttawaLibrary.ca/TTW. For more information about OPL, contact InfoService at 613-580-2940 or [email protected].

Winter Overnight Parking Restrictions will be in effect from November 15th, 2013 until April 1st, 2014 The City of Ottawa is reminding residents that winter overnight parking restrictions are in effect beginning Friday, November 15th. These restrictions ensure that the City’s snow-clearing crews are able to keep Ottawa’s roads safe and clear for pedestrians, cyclists, public transit, and motorists. Between November 15th and April 1st, when 7 cm or more of snowfall is forecasted by Environment Canada, overnight parking restrictions go into effect. These restrictions are automatically enacted, unless the City of Ottawa’s General Manager of Public Works issues an exemption. The City of Ottawa will announce parking restrictions and inform residents if there is an exemption through www.ottawa.ca and the City’s Twitter account @ottawacity. When restrictions are put into place, parking will not be permitted on Ottawa streets between 1:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Vehicles parked on the street when a restriction is in effect will be ticketed. Vehicle owners who have a municipal on-street parking permit are exempt from winter overnight parking restrictions.

Be in the know about snow Sign up to receive e-mail or Twitter notifications of overnight parking restrictions at www.ottawa.ca. After you sign up, you will receive an e-mail or Twitter alert via @ottawacity, every time a winter overnight parking restriction goes into effect or is lifted. The service is free and you can unsubscribe at anytime. You can also find out if an overnight parking restriction is in effect by calling 3-1-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401) or through local media. When day-time or night-time snow removal operations are planned, temporary "no parking" snow removal signs will be posted before snow removal begins. Vehicle owners are reminded not to park on streets where temporary "no parking" snow removal signs are placed. Vehicles parked during planned snow removal will be ticketed and towed to a nearby street. This restriction applies to all vehicles, including those with on-street parking permits. Your safety is the City of Ottawa’s top priority. For more information on winter overnight parking regulations, visit www.ottawa.ca, or call 3-1-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401).

VICTIMS OF CRIME: HOW DO WE BETTER MEET THEIR NEEDS? Monday, March 3, 2014 7:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Algonquin College, T103 The Smart Justice Network of Canada (SJNC) is pleased to invite you to the second in our Ottawa series of community dialogues about justice. Along with Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime and Algonquin College, we are hosting a free event on March 3rd. Ottawa Victim Services will also participate in the event, which will examine the needs of victims. Please join us for an evening of reflection and dialogue as we explore whether the needs of victims of crime are being met given the reliance on the criminal justice system. Since most victims of crime never report and the court process can be a source of further victimization for many others, the justice system is a hollow promise for most. The keynote speaker will be Carolyn Solomon, whose son Kevin was murdered in 1997. Carolyn's powerful message will be followed by a panel of speakers representing victims who we rarely read about in the newspapers and whose needs are as diverse as their backgrounds, who rarely access traditional victim services and struggle to find even basic support. We hope you will join us as we explore these stories and ask ourselves how we as community members, family members and politicians are meeting victims' needs. We all have a role in supporting victims so join us to find out how we can work together. For more information, or to reserve a seat, contact SJNC through the website at: http://smartjustice.ca/contact-us/.

Long time volunteer Jean Peart accepts a congratulatory certificate from Councillor Egli on behalf of the 115th Parkwood Hills Scout Group at their 50th Anniversary Pot Luck Dinner on Monday, February 24th.

Parkwood Hills Good Food Market Good Food Markets (GFM) are community non-profit markets that sell a variety of high quality fruits, vegetables and dried goods at great value. Good Food Markets have been extremely successful in numerous communities in Ottawa and continue to expand into new neighbourhoods. The Good Food Markets are a collaborative initiative with the Poverty and Hunger Working Group, Coalition of Community Health and Resource Centres, Ottawa Public Health, Social Planning Council and the Good Food Box. In 2013, Parkwood Hills ran four markets near Inverness Park increasing access to affordable, healthy food, and

engaging residents. The Parkwood Hills Good Food Markets are run by community residents with support from staff at South Nepean Satellite Community Health Centre and Nepean, Rideau and Osgoode Community Resource Centre. The next Good Food Market will be held on: Thursday, March 13th, 2014 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm Minto Recreation Centre 1343 Meadowlands Drive
