Your City. Your Community. Your News

COUNCILLOR’S MESSAGE I want to thank all the Ward 9 residents that braved the cold last Saturday, December 14th to donate empties to The Christmas Exchange at the Merivale Road Beer Store. I was happy to speak with many of you during this campaign. I also want to thank all of you that came out to the Holiday Drop In we held at the Tanglewood Park Community Centre on Woodfield Drive on Saturday. There is a page of photos from this great event later on in the newsletter. Children and adults alike had a great time and we even had a visit from Santa. Thank you to Tanglewood for hosting us. Later, I dropped in at the 5th Annual General Burns Christmas Party at the General Burns Lodge on Argue Drive. It was also well attended with lots of crafts and treats for the kids. On Monday, I stopped by Sir Winston Churchill Public School to announce the winner of our annual Holiday Card Contest. The winning design was drawn by Lisa R. from Monsieur Walker’s Grade 2 class and is featured later on in the newsletter. Wednesday night, Kristen and I helped out at the St. Joe’s Supper Table Christmas Dinner along with Councillor Fleury and other council colleagues. On Friday, we also helped to fill hampers for The Christmas Exchange Program. While there were no committee meetings for me to attend this week, there were many meetings with staff and the community. For example, I met with staff concerning a zoning density study that will be happening regarding Merivale Road. I also met with community association representatives regarding proposed roadway modifications on Colonnade Road from Merivale Road to Colonnade Road South. Due to the Christmas break, we will be suspending Ward office hours on the following dates: Monday, December 23rd and Monday, December 31st, but will be re-opening on Monday, January 6th, 2014. We will also not be putting out a newsletter for the following dates: Friday, December 27th, 2013, and Friday, January 3rd, 2014, but will resume publication on Friday, January 10th, 2014. Rest assured that my staff and I will still be reachable during this period by email and telephone should any questions or concerns arise. I hope to see many of you at Councillor Rick Chiarelli’s 21st Annual Alcohol Free New Year’s Eve Party again this year at Ben Franklin Place on Tuesday, December 31st, 2013. The event starts at 6:00 p.m. with an ice skating show, and ends with fireworks at 10:00 p.m. Everything is free and everyone is welcome to attend. I would like to wish all Ward 9 residents a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to working with the community in

2014. Till next year,

Keith

Cord Blood "For All Canadians" Campaign On December 11th, representatives from Canadian Blood Services’ Campaign For All Canadians were at City Hall to give a presentation on the building of Canada’s national public cord blood bank. The first phase of the national public cord blood bank opened at The Ottawa Hospital on September 30th, 2013, meaning new parents from the Ottawa area can now donate their babies’ umbilical cord blood (containing stem cells) for transplant. Prior to the opening of the Ottawa collection site, Canada was the only G8 country without a national public cord blood bank. On any given day, there are 1,000 Canadian patients waiting for a stem cell match in order to survive their cancers and other illnesses. Only 50% of Canadian patients are able to find a match for transplantation. Additionally, the number of patients waiting for a bone marrow match has tripled in the past five years. Canadian Blood Services is proud to launch this $12.5-million fundraising campaign to build a new national public cord blood bank. This campaign has been matched by the provincial and territorial governments outside of Quebec, with the governments providing the balance of the $48-million project costs. Donations will be used to help support the start-up costs for the bank, and the government matching dollars will fund the operational costs. For more information, please visit www.blood.ca/campaign and https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8NzhZgTqxtNHNFNWh0SmRRSjA/edit?usp=sharing for a list of frequently asked questions.

Between November 15 and April 1 , when 7 cm or more of snowfall is forecasted by Environment Canada, overnight parking restrictions go into effect. These restrictions are automatically enacted, unless the City of Ottawa’s General Manager of Public Works issues an exemption. The City of Ottawa will announce parking restrictions and inform residents if there is an exemption through www.ottawa.ca and the City’s Twitter account @ottawacity. When restrictions are put into place, parking will not be permitted on Ottawa streets between 1:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Vehicles parked on the street when a restriction is in effect will be ticketed. Vehicle owners who have a municipal on-street parking permit are exempt from winter overnight parking restrictions. Technical briefing nd A technical briefing has taken place on Friday, November 22 at Ottawa City Hall which provided an update on current construction projects and their traffic impacts during the winter months.

The City’s winter operations for 2013-14 season was also outlined at the briefing. Be in the know about snow Sign up to receive e-mail or Twitter notifications of overnight parking restrictions at www.ottawa.ca. After you sign up, you will receive an e-mail or Twitter alert via @ottawacity, every time a winter overnight parking restriction goes into effect or is lifted. The service is free and you can unsubscribe at anytime. You can also find out if an overnight parking restriction is in effect by calling 3-1-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401) or through local media. When day-time or night-time snow removal operations are planned, temporary "no parking" snow removal signs will be posted before snow removal begins. Vehicle owners are reminded not to park on streets where temporary "no parking" snow removal signs are placed. Vehicles parked during planned snow removal will be ticketed and towed to a nearby street. This restriction applies to all vehicles, including those with on-street parking permits. Your safety is the City of Ottawa’s top priority. For more information on winter overnight parking regulations, visit www.ottawa.ca, or call 3-1-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401).
