Your City. Your Community. Your News
CCO OU UN NCCIILLLLO ORR’’SS M MEESSSSAAG GEE April is officially “Soles4Souls” month in Ottawa and residents are encouraged to participate in the shoe drive by donating their gently used shoes. The goal is to collect more than 200,000 shoes to contribute towards the Canada wide mission to collect one million. With the campaign well underway, I wanted to thank all of you who have donated so far. The collected shoes will be distributed to local social agencies in an effort to help some of the city’s most vulnerable adults and children. Any remaining shoes will be shipped by Soles4Souls to locations in need around the world. Shoes can be dropped off at City Hall or at any of the six Dymon Self Storage facilities across the city, including the one located in Knoxdale-Merivale at 27 Auriga Drive (Prince of Wales Dr. and Hunt Club Rd). The campaign runs until the end of April. Please visit www.soles4soulscanada.com for more information. I thank all of you that have signed up to participate in a community cleanup. It is a great program that shines a light on how much residents truly care about their community. This year my office is organizing a cleanup of Craig Henry Park. It will be held Saturday, May 12th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Anyone interested is welcome to join us. Cleaning supplies and treats will be available. We are also gearing up for the next Ward 9 Community Family Fun Day which will be taking place on Saturday, June 23rd from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Fisher Heights Park, 31 Sutton Place. As you may know, we are trying to move the event to a different location in Knoxdale-Merivale each year. Fire Hydrant Testing Season The City has over 18,000 fire hydrants and to ensure that they are all in working order, should our Fire Services need to use them, crews test hydrants annually. In order to determine that a hydrant is capable of meeting fire flow requirements, crews must open the hydrants and discharge water from them at a very high flow rate. While fire hydrant testing is a routine maintenance procedure, it may cause temporary inconveniences. High flow rates discharged during testing can disturb sediments in the water distribution system and can occasionally result in brown or rust-coloured water. It is important to note that, while this discoloured water is not harmful to your health, the City advises residents not to drink or wash laundry using this water. Hydrant testing may also reduce regular water pressure. Reduced water pressure should only be intermittent as the hydrants are being tested. Regular water pressure will return to normal once the flow testing is complete. Testing will commence on May 1st. Prior to hydrant testing, residents in the affected areas will receive a flyer informing them of the work taking place in their community and advertisements will be placed in community papers. For more information on the City’s fire hydrant and the schedule for 2012 fire hydrant testing, please visit: http://ottawa.ca/en/env_ water/water_sewer/water _wells/hydrants/schedule/i ndex.html
