ANNUALREPORT
LETTER FROM THE CEO Dear Friends, This was another tremendously successful year for STAR. We expanded our mission to other locations, increased the number of services provided to our communities and advanced key strategic social change initiatives. This has enabled us to improve our effectiveness and provide more value to the communities we serve. We are an organization that is committed to the marathon of social change work. Led by our long-term vision to build a community free from oppression and sexual trauma, this year we continued to implement services in our three key areas: supporting survivors, improving systems response and creating social change. We are also committed to doing this work in a challenging and
LETTER FROM THE CEO under-resourced environment. The need for specialized sexual trauma services is great throughout Louisiana. In fact, the majority of our state’s 64 parishes have limited or no services for sexual assault survivors, and there is no state funding to support these services. According to our state coalition, Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault (LaFASA), there are only 12 sexual assault service providers in the entire state, including STAR—and STAR is one of only two stand-alone sexual assault centers in the state. This is why STAR has expanded to serve multiple areas across South and Central Louisiana,

and our presence in these areas has confirmed for us the great need for the services we offer. National statistics inform us that the prevalence of sexual trauma is far greater than the number of survivors who report to law enforcement or seek support services. Each year, we have observed a steady increase in the number of survivors accessing our services, which is encouraging. The more outreach and education we conduct, the more these numbers will continue to increase. It is our hope that one day soon, enough survivors will access our services that our communities can begin to heal. Our mission is our passion. We are excited about thisTHE year’sCEO LETTER FROM accomplishments and we look forward to many more successful years. Thank you to our supporters for making our work possible. Warmly,
Racheal Hebert, LCSW President & CEO

ANNUAL HIGHLIGHTS Hosted the First Law Clinic for Student Attorneys This year we successfully launched an innovative legal program that works in partnership with the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center to offer clinical education to student attorneys. This law clinic specializes in serving survivors of sexual assault and is the first of its kind in the United States.
Launched #ICREATEME Youth Campaign Our 3-D Peer Educators developed and launched a social messaging campaign this year. The #ICREATEME campaign is a social messaging campaign targeting youth via Twitter and Instagram. Using the slogan, "Gender roles don't create me. #ICREATEME," participants are motivated to share how they challenge gender stereotypes in their daily lives.
Opened Offices in Alexandria and New Orleans Our biggest development thus far is that we successfully opened offices in new areas of the state, which brought much needed sexual assault services to areas throughout Central and South Louisiana. In January 2016, we officially opened our doors in mid-city New Orleans at 123 N. Genois Street (pictured right). We have 5 staff members assisting survivors through hotline support, advocacy and individual and group counseling. Since opening, we have served 117 survivors from January to June 2016. We also secured office space in Alexandria this year at 1412 Peterman Street (pictured right). We have 3 staff members available to provide hotline support, advocacy and counseling. This office officially opened to the public in September 2016.

SURVIVOR-CENTERED APPROACH At STAR, we take into account the intersectionality of trauma and conduct our operations based on a survivor-centered approach. Everything from the location and décor of our offices to the way we answer the hotline and provide direct services is carefully and intentionally crafted to result in the best possible outcome for the survivors we serve. Feedback from our clients reminds us why this work is so important: “My counselor was amazing. She took a terrible, potentially life-ruining situation and made it bearable. I don’t know if I can ever thank her enough.” "STAR has helped me so much that it has been unbelievable.” “My self-esteem has greatly increased! I am so thankful for all this place has to offer!” “This free service was immensely helpful because of my financial situation, but more importantly every staff person was understanding and always ready to help. They really care.” "Through short-term counseling, I have been able to process my sexual assault and the behaviors that make healing difficult." “STAR was the calm among the chaos, helping to guide me through my own personal storm.” "Keep doing what you’re doing--it’s an excellent service and much needed. I foresee STAR growing and expanding."
STAR informs, engages and educates youth and adults to envision and establish community solutions to the problem of sexual trauma. Below are a few comments from training participants: "I have a better understanding of how to handle a situation where someone was sexually violated."
SPOTLIGHT ON SOCIAL CHANGE
PREVENTION IS POSSIBLE!
"I plan to use what I've learned today to be more sensitive and empathetic." "I plan to be more open-minded and pay close attention to be more aware of things going on around me and within my community." “It actually raised hope for change.” “Grateful for this. A great use of a day.”
