Utah Valley University Culinary Arts Institute Wins the Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl at 2016 American Culinary Federation National Convention St. Augustine, Fla., August 23, 2016 — Four students from Utah Valley University Culinary Arts Institute, Orem, Utah, members of ACF Beehive Chefs Chapter Inc., proved they have the culinary knowhow to win the 2016 Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl. The competition, sponsored by American Technical Publishers and Vitamix, took place at Cook. Craft. Create. Convention & Show, Phoenix, July 15-19. The Utah Valley University Culinary Arts Institute team, pictured left to right; Meghan Roddy, CEPC, assistant coach; Alissa Clarkson, Colleen Webb (captain), Julia Green, Emily Williams and John Thomas, CEC, CCE, head coach; faced off against three other ACF region teams in the “Jeopardy”-style competition. "The four members of our team demonstrated the best of our program at Utah Valley University Culinary Arts Institute,” said Thomas. “These girls are extremely bright, very dedicated and all around good people. Coach Roddy and I could not be prouder." The Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl is open to junior culinary teams from ACF chapters, apprenticeship programs and American Culinary Federation Education Foundation-accredited schools. The competition is named in honor of past ACF National President Baron H. Galand, CEC, AAC, HOF, who championed junior members and encouraged them to get involved in their profession outside the kitchen. Competition questions are compiled from culinary textbooks that cover topics such as nutrition, baking, culinary math, safety and sanitation, and the arts of classical and modern cooking. To compete for the national title, teams first competed and won their respective regional competition. “Our team members were all extremely focused and knowledgeable in their topics and had a wonderful ability to communicate clearly with each other,” said Roddy. “The girls proved that they could work well as a team and that truly ensured their success. We are all so proud of them.” More than 850 chefs, cooks, students and foodservice professionals attended Cook. Craft. Create. Convention & Show, hosted by the ACF Chef’s Association of Arizona, Inc. The event provided attendees with numerous opportunities to advance their professional development and enhance their culinary skills through informative workshops and seminars, cutting-edge demonstrations, a trade show featuring nearly 100 exhibitors, a career fair, national competitions and ACF’s annual national awards. -MORE-
