Community Serv ice Guidelines Beginning with the class of 2013 students will be required to complete 40 hours of community service done through volunteer work in order to meet the high school graduation requirements.

These hours are to be completed by working with: 

Non-profit Organizations: an association, club, or society that is operated exclusively for social welfare, civic improvement, pleasure, recreation or any other purpose except profit. Religious organizations: in order to be applicable, the service performed may not be part of rituals, services or ceremonies in any specific religion thus participating in religious services (choir, alter service, reading the torah/bible) are NOT applicable. However, educational activities and nonreligious activities which benefit the religious community (in non-financial ways) are applicable. Examples: teaching Sunday school, babysitting during services, painting church buildings, clothing drives, working in shelters, or mission trips.

Traditional school –sponsored activities: activities performed which are traditional extra-curricular activities are NOT applicable. Thus, participation in student government, marching band, National Honor Society and clubs or teams is NOT applicable unless the groups are organizing and/or performing specific community service activities. Service through the judicial system: community service which is court-ordered or assigned is NOT applicable.

Records Time logs are to be completed for a total of 40 hours by March of your 12th grade year. They can be submitted in increments of 10 hours. Logs can be downloaded from RVHS website or you can get them from the College and Career Center as needed. Do not wait until all 40 hours have been completed or the sheet is full to turn it in, since hours will only be counted for current semester.

Service completed during weekends and vacation time will be credited with no more than 8 hours per day.

Completed hours must be submitted for recording at the conclusion of the semester in which they were performed.

Hours that cannot be verified will not be counted.

Where can I get more information? You can go to the College & Career Center located in the Administration Office (2nd floor) to get an updated list for organizations in our area that are currently providing volunteer opportunities.

Other Guidelines 

It is recommended that student’s service be described and approved prior to beginning any service to ensure that the student’s hours will be accepted. Incoming freshmen may complete hours in the summer prior to entering high school.
