ARTUR RUBINSTEIN

Certainly none of Ihu givat composers has written music w i t h a wider or more universal appeal than the Nocturnes oi Chopin Sophisticated, elaborately decorated and exotic they stand with the Preludes as one of this composer's most imposing works. Rubinstein gives a virtuoso performance of these beautiful pieces in a splendid example of consistent style.

The title "Les Adieux" was applied to this Sonata because, as stated on the m a n u s c r i u i . it was composed on the occasion of the departure of H.R.H. the Archduke Rudolph from Vienna, May 21st, 1809, before the advancing French army. The title "Moonlight" however, was not applied by Beethoven but by a Berlin critic who remarked that th, opening movement reminded him of moonlight on the lake of Lucerne, a most api comparison. These two popular sonatas are here given shining performances by Solomon whose supple conrol brought the criticism from A.P. of "The Gramophone" of ":i p r r f o r marice such as I have not heard equalled . . . ODLP.1019 (10-inch £1/16/6) Wherever it has gone the Glasgow Orpheus Choir lias been welcomed and acclaimed. Besides extensively travelling throughout the British Isles, prior to World War II it had travelled through six European countries and the U.S.A. and Canada. On the first L.P. record to be issued here of this famous group will be found their most famous songs; beautiful songs from Scotland, all treated with the warmth and feeling that only the Glasgow Orpheus Choir can infuse into a composition. As the founder of this choir, Sir Hugh Roberton says "The whole point of the Orpheus was that it reached the heart of the people everywhere, , and this, probably, because it always sang from the heart as well as from the mind."

The Preludes of Chopin have been noted for their originality, their romantic atmosph< ]••and their passionate eloquence and have tempted and still tempt, musicians to attribute i, them autobiographical significance. The fact that Chopin completed them at Majorca h:r led to their being associated with definite incidents. Whatever their romantic association they remain as some of the most beautiful music ever written for the piano. In ttm: recording Moura Lympany gives a performance oi which A.F., writing in "The Gramopli i n r 1 says, "the poetry, the ardour, the strength of this masterpiece are to be 1'cmnd in ; ! , > most satisfying abundance in this great performance which I recommend w i t h a l t n ceart."

Following the success of his first Honky Tonk L.P., Knuckles O'Toole responds with this • urther selection of old time songs all in his inimitable Honky Tonk style. A record t h a t makes you want to tap your feet.

It indeed has proved to be one of the most extrovert, works this master melodist has given us. The string writing provides an object lesson in the treatment of a string orchestra which remains almost unequalled in subtlety. The two favourite orchestral pieces which are included on this disc need no introduction and. all are i;iven .1 dazzling Hi-Fi performance by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Kletzki.
