ABSTRACT (ABSTRACT) "My views of government were largely shaped by the 12 years that I worked for Senator [William Cohen]," [Susan Collins] said during a noontime press conference at Husson College. Collins works at Husson as executive director of the Center for Family Business and as director of International and External Programs. Describing herself as a fiscal conservative, Collins joined the GOP chorus call for a balanced budget and smaller government, as well as for personal freedom and free enterprise. The Bangor resident also reminded supporters that she comes from business stock -- the S.W. Collins Co., a 150-year-old retail lumber concern in Caribou. Collins, wearing her signature red dress, also announced the co-chairmen of her campaign -- Bangor lawyer and Cohen confidant Lew Vafiades, and ski mogul Les Otten.
FULL TEXT BANGOR -- Susan Collins, perhaps the closest thing Sen. William Cohen has to a political protege, joined the race Wednesday for her former boss's job. Collins, the 1994 Republican nominee for governor and a Cohen aide for 12 years, formally launched her campaign for the U.S. Senate seat Cohen will vacate early next year. The 41-year-old Caribou native, who served as New England head of the U.S. Small Business Administration under President Bush, said she would focus her campaign on trimming government and creating jobs. Though Maine's senior senator, who just returned to Washington from Bosnia, did not attend the event, a few members of his Bangor staff did. But Collins did not miss a chance to grab at the retiring senator's potential coattails. "My views of government were largely shaped by the 12 years that I worked for Senator Cohen," Collins said during a noontime press conference at Husson College. Collins works at Husson as executive director of the Center for Family Business and as director of International and External Programs. Collins joined the Bangor college in December 1994, about a month after placing third behind independent Angus King and Democrat Joseph Brennan in the race for governor. She said Wednesday that she will work part time at the college for a while, then resign later. If elected, Collins said, she would carry on the "time-honored Maine values of common sense, reason and hard work." Describing herself as a fiscal conservative, Collins joined the GOP chorus call for a balanced budget and smaller government, as well as for personal freedom and free enterprise. With her entrance into the Senate arena, Collins joins state Sen. W. John Hathaway of Kennebunkport, who on Monday announced he too would seek the GOP nomination. Cape Elizabeth businessman Robert A.G. Monks, twice a Senate candidate in the 1970s, also is expected to join the race, although he has not made a formal PDF GENERATED BY SEARCH.PROQUEST.COM

announcement. So far, only Brennan has officially entered the Democratic primary race, although Jean Hay, a former Bangor Daily News copy editor and 1994 congressional candidate, is expected to join soon. Former U.S. Rep. Thomas Andrews also is said to be considering the primary race, as is state Sen. Sean Faircloth of Bangor. Former Democratic state Sen. Stephen Bost of Orono, who until recently operated Ross Perot's political machine in New England, will run for the Senate as an independent candidate. In apparent reference to Monks and Hathaway, both wealthy businessmen who are likely to use their personal resources during the campaign, Collins said that money cannot replace hard work in the race. "I won't have the most money in this campaign," Collins said. "But no candidate has ever had a more loyal, dedicated group of volunteers, and that's what it takes to win."
