San Jose State University Alumni Association Santa Cruz Area Chapter Coastlines, January, 2017 President’s Message Happy New Year to all of our SJSU Alumni Chapter members. We have had a very busy year with many member activities, including our football viewing party on Oct. 21st, a private tour of the Moss Landing Marine Labs on Oct. 26th, our annual Holiday Party on December 7th, and our inaugural SJSU Alumni Night at the Santa Cruz Warriors on January 14th. It was great to see the many members who participated and enjoyed these chapter events. I thank the members of our Board of Directors who plan and help run these membership activities. We continue to solicit ideas and other input from the membership and ask you to continue to be involved. Watch for more information on our future planned chapter events: SJSU Men’s Basketball game versus Air Force on February 18th, wine tasting and vineyard tour in conjunction with the Santa Clara Valley Chapter in May and an Elkhorn Slough Safari tour this late spring/summer. Our Holiday Party was a great success and we appreciated the opportunity to have our new SJSU President, Mary Papazian, and her husband Dennis in attendance. President Papazian presented us with an update on SJSU and her vision for the future. Through the party, we were able to raise almost $15,000.00 for scholarship and Marching Band support. Additional donations are always needed, especially since we have a great group of very appreciative scholarship recipients. The Board has made it a goal to expand our membership and we welcome new members: Sheridan Bowman, Denise & Eric Buecheler, Mary Lee and Jesse DeGennaro, Gail Evans, Fred and Barbara Keeley, Cindy Margolin, Lynda Phillips and Leighton Keeling. Our SJSU Alumni Night at the Santa Cruz Warriors had over one hundred alumni in attendance and we hope to secure some additional members from that event. We were sad to hear of the passing of two influential members of our chapter; Wayne Fontes (a chapter founder) and Dr. Stan Hadjuk. This chapter always appreciates your input. I can be reached at [email protected] or by phone at 408-768-3425 or by mail at PO Box 2037, Aptos, CA 95001. Carolyn Lewis, President

Scholarship Committee Celebrates Graduates and Readies for New Round Your Chapter's Scholarship Committee is delighted to congratulate Cody Gradone and Michael Bois, both of whom are scheduled to graduate during the 2016-17 academic year. Cody graduated in December, with a degree in Radio, TV, Film and a minor in Advertising. He participated in club sports, worked part time (as so many SJSU students do), and said he "loves the diverse amenities" available on campus. Michael is scheduled to graduate in May with a B.S. In Business Administration. He transferred from Cabrillo College in Fall 2015 and, even though he continued to work part time, he is graduating (with an excellent gpa!) in only two years! Congratulations Cody and Michael! We're so proud of your

accomplishments and look forward to welcoming you as SJSU alumni! The Scholarship Committee is gearing up for our next round of applicants. The application for high school seniors is at our new website: sjsualumnisantacruz.org. The application for Cabrillo transfer students is at Cabrillo's Financial Aid website: Cabrillo.edu. Deadline to apply is March 31. As always, donations to the Scholarship Fund are needed and much appreciated. Send checks to the attention of "Scholarship Fund" to: SJSU Alumni, Santa Cruz Chapter, P.O. Box 2037, Aptos, CA 95001. For questions or further information about the Chapter's scholarship program, contact Donna Ziel at [email protected]. Congratulations to all of our truly outstanding scholars! And many thanks to our hard-working Scholarship Committee: Priscilla Brown, Bob Coe, Freda Crum, Carolyn Lewis, Linda Rice, Gail Evans, and Donna Ziel (Chair). The Committee is looking for one or two new members. If you are interested in helping, please contact Donna Ziel at [email protected]
