Co-op’s and Internships in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science August 2017

Overview: The Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (CEMS) supports both Industrial Internships and Co-op Industrial Assignments for qualified students in the Chemical Engineering (ChEn) and Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) programs. Valuable educational experiences may be gained during a period of full-time industrial employment in a setting that involves the application of chemical engineering and/or materials science and engineering principles. These industrial assignments provide financial support in addition to valuable experience. The Co-op, or co-operative education program, formally integrates technical employment with academic studies. The length of the employment is typically two or three semesters, including the summer semester. Students should work with their academic advisors to plan their programs accordingly. Specific suggestions are provided below. An Internship also integrates technical employment and academic studies but it is shorter in length and almost always a summer experience. Like a co-op, the maximum benefit and integration with coursework occurs after the junior year. CSE Engineering Co-op Program: Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering majors interested in pursuing a Co-op position consult with the CSE Engineering Co-op Program, which is run out of the Mechanical Engineering Department. Students should visit http://co-op.umn.edu/ for more information. Students must apply for the program and then they can interview for positions. Once a position is found, students in the CSE Engineering Co-op program complete courses during their work assignment. The courses are counted as technical electives. Application deadlines are early in both the fall and spring semesters. Planning is necessary and so students should explore this option well before the application deadlines. The CSE Engineering Co-op Program also offers a one credit class that fulfills the requirements needed for international students who would like to pursue a summer internship. No technical elective credit is awarded for this one credit course. Suggestions for Chemical Engineering Students: To participate in the CSE Engineering Co-op Program, you need to define at least two semesters for the work assignment. If you are following the 4-year plan exactly, there is only one reasonable place to fit in this opportunity: an entire academic year between Junior and Senior year. In this option, you can complete two semesters (Fall + Spring) or three semesters (Fall +

Spring + Summer) between the Junior and Senior Years. This option extends time needed to earn your degree by one year. If you are ahead of schedule on the requirements in the lower division such that you can complete all required courses from the first two years on the 4-year plan in 3 semesters, then you can consider a Co-op assignment during Spring Sophomore year and the following summer. There may be other possibilities depending on your specific situation; see Kacey Gregerson or your Faculty advisor to discuss. Suggestions for Materials Science and Engineering Students To participate in the CSE Engineering Co-op Program, you need to define at least two semesters for the work assignment. If you are following the 4-year plan exactly, there are two reasonable places to fit in this opportunity. 1. Summer between Junior and Senior Year + Fall Senior Year. In this option, you will complete the Co-op assignment and then return to campus for Spring Senior Year (permission will be granted for taking MatS 4301W without MatS 4212) and follow that up with the Fall Senior Year courses (MatS 4212, MatS 4221, Tech Electives). This option extends time needed to earn your degree by one semester (December graduation). 2. An entire academic year between Junior and Senior year. In this option, you will complete two semesters (Fall + Spring) or three semesters (Fall + Spring + Summer) between the Junior and Senior Years. Co-op and Internships without Academic Credit: Students may also pursue industrial assignments without academic credit. This choice is quite common for summer internships. For industrial assignments during the fall or spring semesters, students may need to file for a leave of absence if they are not registering for any courses. Again planning is necessary and the suggestions above are also useful.
