CLINTON A Great Place to Start: A mixture of small town quaintness and historical charm make Clinton a great place to start: a family, a business, a vacation. The new Morgan School stands as an example of the commitment to education that new families are looking for. It is in our history: Yale got its start in Clinton. But there’s more than just the schools: From the town beaches and marinas to the two large recreational complexes, there is a wide variety of outdoor activities. The Henry Carter Hull Library offers much more than books with its many programs for kids and adults. The Andrews Memorial Town Hall is the home of the Opera Theater of Connecticut, the George Flynn Classical Concert Series, and the Clinton Park & Rec Family Theater. The Liberty Green Historic District invites you to walk back in time with stops at Old Brick and the Stanton Museum. The Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to enhancing the local economic vitality and quality of life of the greater Clinton area. Through a core of volunteers and professional staff, the Chamber provides leadership, support, and networking within the business

community. Our membership includes large organizations, one-man shops, and everything in between in retail, industrial, construction, service, and, of course, the marine industry. Visit our website at www. clintonct.com to connect to the business you need in our member directory and to see some of the many activities and events happening. Clinton’s natural harbor is fed by three rivers coming to join Long Island Sound behind the shelter of Cedar Island. Visit any of our many marinas for a beautiful view of the water. Soak in the sun at one of our town beaches. Enjoy the fresh seafood at many of our fine restaurants, or sample some of the other cuisines available from American to Italian to Chinese. The Chamber office is at 50 East Main Street in Clinton and we are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the week. In our community room we have brochures, calendars, and menus from local businesses and organizations. Give us a call at 860-669-3889 for directions, referrals, or any information you may need about Clinton. Clinton is a Great Place to Start: anything. Executive Director Ken Hartley

Summer Concert Series and Bluefish 5k Approach By Jen Matteis

The fireworks display is on hold until next year, but there’s still plenty to look forward to for Clinton residents. Slated for August, the SummerFest & Fireworks was canceled due to a lack of funding and manpower—two commodities that won’t be lacking next year, if the community’s response to the cancellation is any indicator. In the meantime, the Clinton Chamber of Commerce is focusing on other events that it churns out every year, from summer concerts to the Bluefish 5k and more. On Thursday June 15, the chamber is

holding its annual breakfast meeting at 8 a.m. in the Green Room at Clinton Town Hall. It’s no festival, but it’s an important event for the chamber. Chamber Executive Director Ken Hartley reminds us that the Chamber’s goal is primarily to promote its member businesses—even through events like the fireworks. “We do these things for the town to help publicize our businesses,” Hartley said. “Most of them are small businesses here in town. We want people to have the awareness that hey, yeah I can buy a TV here. I don’t need to drive all the way out to Waterford to Continued on page 11

We want people to be aware of what’s here—that’s why we do these things.” At the breakfast meeting, the Chamber held its election of officers and acknowledged this year’s recipients of the Robert DiBona Scholarship. State Senator Art Linares attended the meeting to give us an update on what’s going on up in Hartford.

Concerts a Draw All Summer Long Events for members include monthly morning networking meetings, as well as monthly business after hours events. Still, there’s no shortage of events for the community, too. Coming up is the seven-week Guilford Savings Bank Summer Concert Series. The series runs on Thursdays, July 6 through Aug. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Vece Gazebo at Pierson School, 75 East Main Street. “Something that we’re going to do differently this year is we’re working with our local restaurants and food service people to do picnic boxes,” said Hartley. For about $10, concert-goers can pre-order a meal for two to pick up at the concert. July will also bring a return of Women in Business, held jointly with the Madison Chamber, and an event featuring a medium on Sunday, July 16.

Get Ready to Run August brings back the Steward’s Ace Hardware Bluefish 5k—it’s the 20th year for the race, which attracts up to 400 runners to its certified course starting and ending at Jared Eliot Middle School. The event is a joint fundraiser for the Chamber and Shoreline Community Women (SCW). “It was originally started when Ellen Cavanagh was director of the Chamber; she partnered with Judy Moore [of SCW],” said Jess Robison, a member of the SCW Bluefish 5k Committee. “It’s been successful ever since. Runners start showing up around 7:30 or 8 and we have a DJ who plays music, the runners have some snacks, and this year Scottish Dave’s Pub is hosting an after party.” 12 • Clinton Town Guide 2017 | Shore Publishing

Scottish Dave’s will provide a free beer and discounted menu item to every runner. “They can come in anytime that day with their bib and take advantage of that,” Robison said. SCW puts $2,500 of the race’s proceeds into scholarships for high school students. The remainder funds boxes for soldiers, local soup kitchens, Clinton’s Trunk or Treat, Bikes for Kids, and more. SCW also adopts a Clinton family in need each year, helping out with everything from gas to groceries and baby supplies if they are expecting. “All the proceeds [from the 5k] are split equally between the Chamber of Commerce and Shoreline Community Women, and all the funds are used to benefit different programs in town,” Robison said. “Our whole goal is basically just to raise money and distribute it to local charities. When people need power in numbers they can call us and we can get a group of our members to help out. We also do art programs at the libraries in Clinton and Westbrook, and we also do an art program for the residents at the Shoreline at Clinton.”

Full Roster of Fall Events Another of the Chamber’s longest running events takes place on Friday, Oct. 6 at the new Morgan School. “This will be the 28th year that we will host the United States Coast Guard Band, with special thanks to Shore TV & Appliance, which has sponsored it continuously since the beginning,” said Hartley. “That’s a free concert, but you have to get tickets for it. This year I want to make sure that everyone knows about it and we get people there, because it’s a good concert, a very good band.” Later in October is Trunk or Treat, held the Friday before Halloween at Clinton Crossing. “It started back when Superstorm Sandy came through—basically wiped out Halloween for the town—because a lot of people didn’t have power, trees were down. It was one of those spontaneous, throw-itup-fast things and we’ve been running it ever since. It’s just a lot of fun,” Hartley said. Continued on page 14

A Celebration Like No Other SCW—a nonprofit member of the Clinton Chamber and a member of the Connecticut Junior Women—is one of several other organizations teaming up with the Chamber on another of its biggest events, Christmas in Clinton. This year, the event is set for Sunday, Dec. 3. It includes a holiday craft fair at Town Hall, a Clinton Historical Society event at the Old Brick, snacks and beverages served at several different places in town, and holiday activities for all ages. “That’s pretty much throughout downtown Clinton; there’s activities that go on all day long,” said Hartley. “Every year it’s been expanding and that’s been going on for years.

Looking to 2018 “Looking forward to next year, we’re going to do another round of Dancing with the Stars,” he said. “We are bringing back the expo, probably the way it used to be on a Saturday. It may be expanded out so it’s not one expo, but two or three at different times of the year. We’re looking at ways where our business members can relate to the community in different ways than just 14 • Clinton Town Guide 2017 | Shore Publishing

behind a storefront or a sign. It can be a generally good thing for everyone.” Next year, look for a return of all these events—plus the SummerFest & Fireworks. “We fully intend to bring it back next summer,” Hartley said. “We’ve had people stepping up and saying, ‘Gee, if we knew you needed help, we’d help,’ so we’re going to accept that help. There are many, many things to be done and many, many ways in which people can contribute. “The fireworks, when we had them, those were a great night in town. People left there feeling good about living in Clinton, and we want to bring that back again.” Want to help bring back the SummerFest & Fireworks? Contact the Clinton Chamber at 860-669-3889. The Steward’s Ace Hardware Bluefish 5K Road Race is on Saturday, Aug. 12 starting and ending at Jared Eliot Middle School, 69 Fairy Dell Road. Runners can register online through Active.com. For more information about Shoreline Community Women, contact Jess at [email protected]. Any woman over the age of 18 is welcome to join.

The Park & Recreation Department offices are located at the Indian River Recreation Complex at 201 Killingworth Turnpike. The administration building provides office space for the Park & Recreation Department and has a 1,342-square-foot all-purpose room, fully equipped kitchen, and public restrooms. The Park & Recreation Commission was established in 1968 and five years later opened its office in the historic Academy Building at 61 East Main Street. Built in 1801, the Academy Building was originally a schoolhouse, unique in that it had two stories rather than the traditional single floor common to that era. As other schools were built, the Academy stood vacant until local farmers rented it at $1 a year as a meeting place and it became The Grange Hall. The second floor is still used for the Brett Renfrew Teen Center and meeting space. 16 • Clinton Town Guide 2017 | Shore Publishing

Clinton Land Conservation Trust

The Clinton Land Conservation Trust (CLCT) is a non-profit corporation, run entirely by volunteers, working since 1967 to preserve the many extraordinary natural resources in Clinton. The land currently held in public trust in Clinton consists of more than 750 acres. The terrain covers salt marshes and bogs, forests, ledges, and meadows and most trust property is open to the public to explore and enjoy. Hiking is encouraged and dogs on leashes are welcome. No motorized vehicles are permitted anywhere on CLCT property. Camping and fires are also prohibited. Many groups including Eagle Scouts and Girl Scouts, Clinton schools, town commissions and civic groups, the Connecticut Horse Council, and generous area businesses have supported the goals of the land trust and made great improvements to the land by means of trails, bridges, etc. The CLCT works with schools and sports teams and awards the annual Crosby Environmental Scholarship to a local high school senior.

How Can You Help the CLCT?

You can become a member and volunteer your time for trail building, educational outreach, or fundraising. The trust also welcomes donations of land or other property; all donations are tax-deductible. CLCT encourages the public to explore the trails located on Land Trust property: • Peters Memorial Woods, Valley Road, Brickyard Road • Deane Haag Nature Trail, Kenilworth Drive • Jessie Buell Forest, Cream Pot Road or Taylor Ridge • Chittenden Hill Loop, Chittenden Hill Road • The Hammocks, Beach Park Road • Kenilworth Forest, Kenilworth Drive Maps, guides, and photographs are available online at www.clintonlandtrust.org.
