When reporter’s asked Britney Spears why she shaved her head, her response was, “Because of you.” Parisian artist Claire Tabouret has now re-established her residence, and studio, to the inspirational cauldron that is Los Angeles. This will no doubt benifit Los Angeles, but it has also clearly added a potent new prism to the varied influences that confidently course through her, and her stern-faced portraits, with a conspiratorial, confrontational intimacy. The ultimate artistic impression she leaves us with, and leads us with, and challenges us with, is that she is ultimately a defender of the individuals, or groups, that find themselves historically victimized to the uncomfortable edges of exploitation by out-dated sentimentality. Be it expressed in her subjects of perceived fragility at the age of transitional adolescence, or in the repurposed colonialist subjects that she has re-interpreted, and thusly returned, to a position of power. Her works are evidence of a contrarian path worth following, despite all historically engrained societal pressures repressing such powers within all of us. SADE is pleased to present “Because Of You,” the first solo exhibition by Claire Tabouret in the United States, with an opening reception on Sunday, January 24, 2016, from 7–11pm. Claire Tabouret’s “Because Of You” will be on view at SADE, 204 South Avenue 19, Los Angeles, CA, 90031, from January 24, 2016 until February 21, 2016. To be honest with you, I’m not even gunna lie right now: I feel like when you look at me, youre looking at how I look. Like when you check my ass out, you're looking at how my ass looks, not what my ass looks like. You’re judging. It’s annoying and not hot and whatnot. Because I do that to myself. Like, here I am, right? acting as if my ass looks a certain way, and then I have to take into account how you see my ass too, to behave right? We’re judging me. And why would I need to incorporate your data to find this unhot median. I don’t need that. I don’t need that. And you don’t listen. Wow, I’m guna take a deep belly breath so that I can let my God in right now. Ok I’m back, you need to focus on helping someone else. Like, go help some girl with her art project or whatever. I’m gunna need you to help someone. Go help someone! Youre wasting. My time. By not helping people. I’ve always felt you can’t know yourself if you haven’t hatefucked yourself. But I feel like you haven’t even thought of the concept! You’re insane actually. And you look at me like I’m crazy? I’m the only one who gets it. It’s actually so funny. SO FUNNY! But you know what’s even funnier? That if you didn’t think I was nuts, you wouldn’t think about me at all, ya Clown-ass Bitch. And it’s more important to me that you perceive me than know me rn. I’ll let you know if that changes. I’ll be honest I promise. I’ll be shooting you a nice lil honest text. My God and I are fine. We are fine. So go ahead and invent your God and just go. Because you’re lookin at me funny and it makes me feel bad. Either we fuck, make each other money or try to kill each other. Those are the only options, cutie. So yeah seriously, yah, I need help with my art project still and I’ll wait to hear from you.
