Course Description Criminal Justice is a two-year program that provides students with the skills, knowledge, and behaviors necessary to obtain employment in the Criminal Justice field. The curriculum is a broad-based program intended to give students the awareness of college and occupational opportunities in the field. Through a blending of a strong academic component with a rigorous hands-on feature, students gain insight into what it takes to be successful in Criminal Justice. Students can gain entry level employment as security officers or further their education in emergency management, security management, law enforcement leadership, criminology, criminal law, forensic science, financial forensics, corrections studies, paralegal studies, political science, or criminal justice majors.

Units of Instruction

All programs include a variety of classroom instruction methods, which may include: lecture, class discussion, guest speakers, demonstrations, projects, group work, computer research, etc. Each program also includes a variety of hands-on practice, which may include: labs, live work, field work, field trips, college visits, internships, etc.

First-Year • Introduction to Communications • History of Law Enforcement • Introduction to Criminal Justice Careers • Orientation to the World of Work • Police Professionalism/Ethics • Introduction to Police Operations • Career and Financial Management • Introduction to Law • Introduction to Court Systems • Juvenile Justice • Introduction to Prison System • Patrol Tactics • English/Science and Social Studies Topics

Second-Year • Professional Development • Defensive Tactics • Overview of Criminal Investigations • Case Preparation • Crimes Against Persons • Crimes Against Property • NOCTI Testing • Criminal Investigations Project • Internships/Advanced Security Principles • NYS Security Guard Certification • English, Science and Social Studies Topics

Hands-on Activities Students will have the opportunity to practice firearm safety, defensive tactics, fingerprinting, patrol procedures, handcuffing, and arrest procedures. Students will also work in small groups to complete criminal investigation projects as well as forensic science activities.

Internship Students will have an opportunity in their senior year to participate in a five week internship. Students will be able to apply what they have learned in their program to a real-life on the job setting. Examples of prior internship sites include: • • • • • • •

Grading Quarterly grades are based on the following three categories:

Work Ethic Students receive a daily work ethic grade based on the following: • • • • • • • • • •

Skills Tasks

Students will be graded on authentic hands-on tasks and skills related to the program. Some examples of Skills Tasks for this course are: • • • •

Students will be graded on written assignments, quizzes, tests, and projects.

Final Exam

Students will also take a comprehensive final exam counting as twenty percent (20%) of their final school grade.

Successful students will earn four (4) high school credits per school year. These may include the following integrated academic credits: • • • •

Dress Code Requirements Our expectation is that students are dressed in clothing normally found acceptable in their chosen field. Students should comply with all provisions of the Code of Conduct regarding dress.

Students will be advised of all classroom rules and late work policies within the first few days of instruction. Students will also be provided with the code of conduct outlining general building rules.
