What is a CIHS? ●

The Innovative Education Initiatives Act (SL 2003-277, Senate Bill 656) and the Cooperative Innovative High School Programs statute (§ 115C-238.50-.55) encourage Local Education Agencies (LEAs) to partner with their local postsecondary Institutes of Higher Education (IHEs) to provide cooperative programs jointly in high schools and colleges/universities that will expand students’ opportunities for education success through high quality instructional programming.



The Cooperative Innovative High School (CIHS) targets students who are at risk of dropping out of high school, first-generation college students, and/or students who would benefit from accelerated learning opportunities.



Currently, NC has over 100 Cooperative Innovative High Schools, including 80 funded partnerships.

Proposed CIHS Design From the CIHS Framework: ● Connecting student interest to community opportunity. ● Connecting the local economy to the school outcomes. ● Partnering among students, families, schools, and higher learning. Our CIHS Design: ● SAGE Academy campus as our hub of options for non-traditional learning opportunities ● Students enroll in 9th grade in a cohort model of 25 students ● Students begin full-time CCCC coursework by 11th grade ● High school diploma of 22 credits that is purposefully accelerated ● By year 5, students attain Associate in Science (Engineering Focus) from CCCC ● Additional options for internships and apprenticeships ● Additional options for college enrollment

Proposed CIHS Pathway ● High School diploma of 22 credits ● Associate in Science (Engineering Focus) with minimum 60 credit hours ● Eligibility for Bachelor of Science in Engineering transfer credit ● Six semesters through CCCC ● CCCC courses provide high school graduation credit ● Options for Associate in Arts ● Options for CTE Pathway •

Proposed CIHS Curriculum ● Project Based Learning through cohort model of 25 students ● Interdisciplinary planning and support for student projects ● Purposeful scheduling for Math and Science each semester ● Purposeful scheduling for high school credits ● Pre-college coursework (ACA 122 College Transfer Success) ● Science includes Chemistry and Physics ● Math includes Calculus and Differential Equations ● CCCC instructors for various traditional high school credits, including 4th Social Studies credit, 4th Math credit, and 3rd Science credit

CIHS Budget Requests ● The NC DPI application process allows for districts and IHE partners to apply for funding to support the CIHS. ● CCS plans to request CIHS funding to support participating students through instructional materials, textbooks, and transportation. ● CCS plans to request CIHS funding to support participating teachers through professional development with NC New Schools. ● CCS is able to utilize existing funding and personnel for nontraditional learning options to support the CIHS plans. •
