To Whom It May Concern: My name is Christian Bell, and I am an entering freshman at Morehouse College (Atlanta, GA) planning to major in religious studies and political science. I was a recent participant in the Pre-freshman Summer Program at Morehouse. The objective of the program is to promote academic development, community service and leadership skills among entering Morehouse students. This wonderful experience let me know that despite the tough economic and social challenges faced in Cleveland, Ohio there is hope. I grew up in a drug, crime infested environment in Cleveland. If Cleveland is one of the poorest cities in America, then I was on the very bottom of the list. We were so poor that we could not afford to pay attention. I am from a single-parent house with six children and I am the eldest. Morehouse College offered that hope that encourages young men to become leaders for change in their communities. As a result, I plan to help uplift, enlighten and encourage the city of Cleveland and give back to my community. I am currently seeking financial sponsors to help me with tuition / room and board, and hope I can count on your support. Morehouse College was founded in 1867 and has produced some of the most dynamic leaders in America including Dr. Martin L. King, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, Sr., Maynard Jackson, Spike Lee and Samuel Jackson among many others. Morehouse College believes in developing men with disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership and service. Since its founding, Morehouse College has launched numerous educational programs. I definitely plan to give back to my community by dedicating my life to serving others as a minister and lawyer. The cost of tuition, room and board and other educational expenses at Morehouse College is $36,900. Morehouse has awarded me $23,000 in federal grants and loans. I need your help in raising $10,000 to meet the rest of my need. I am asking contributors to each donate $250-3000, to help me reach my goal. Is it possible for you to assist me by making a contribution? Any amount of contribution would be appreciated. I will plan to give a speech and share my journal, photographs, and experiences with contributors upon my return. My program tuition is due August 23, 2008. I have enclosed a contribution form for your payment reference. Please feel free to contact me at (216) 233-8124 if you need more information. Your generous contribution would enable me to share in this wonderful opportunity and start the journey of becoming a Morehouse Man. We must stop the brain drain in Cleveland and help support the next generation of leaders. Thank you in advance for your consideration and support.

Sincerely yours,

Christian Bell Christian Bell Freshman, Morehouse College

Christian Bell Biography Christian Bell is a student from very humbling beginnings. Due to lack of funds, Mr. Bell has lived all over the city of Cleveland, from the Outhwaite Projects on Woodland to various communities such as, Buckeye, Kinsmen, Hough and St. Clair area. Christian is from a single parent home where he is the eldest of six children, comprised of two boys and four girls. Having such a large family helped Mr. Bell to mature into the man he is today. Mr. Bell quickly realized the importance for him to be a good role model, because he has five other sibling looking up to him for guidance. Surviving in this world has not been easy for Christian. There are times when circumstances were so tough that he did not know where he would lay his head or where his next meal would come from. During those hard times Christian prayed the most and he vowed to himself that he would make a better life for his himself, his family and his community. Many inner-city youth resort to taking the easy route to get cash by selling drugs or being involved in different crimes in the community. However, Christian decided that was not the way he wanted to live or the image he wanted to portray. He decided to go against the negative grain of what everyone else was doing and focus his attention on positive thoughts and actions through the Word of God. This new focus was also on education. Sure he had been in school all his life, but it was not until his high school that he really understood that education was the key for a better life. A new high school, St. Martin de Porres, was opening down the street from his home on St. Clair offering hope in a sea of despair. Christian decided to take the opportunity to attend the catholic school for his freshman year of high school. This was a big transition for Christian, because he never attended a private or Catholic school. Christian was educated mostly in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. At this new high school Christian was able to learn without being looked at as an outcast by his peers for wanting to pursue a higher education. Christian was able to have his first taste of academic success. He worked hard averaging each semester between a 3.5 - 3.9 grade point averages. Graduating with honors Christian was apart of the first class of St. Martin de Porres High School. He was also involved in numerous extra-curricular activities including: basketball, baseball, golf, debate club, chess club, student government, facing history, choir, and retreat team. Furthermore, Christian served as Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, The Paw Print, thus producing the school’s first newspaper in his sophomore year. Christian also gave back to the community by doing community service at many places such as: Habitat for Humanity, A Place to Play Childcare, St. Clair/ Superior Development Group, Hospice of the Western Reserve, Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame among many others. Christian also gained real-world work experience in addition to his numerous activities. Christian obtained a paid internship at the law firm, Calfee Halter & Griswald, and the printing company, Admiral Products performing clerical work, filing, typing and answering phones. He also held various after-school jobs at places including Dave’s supermarket, CVS pharmacy, Sifco Industries, Progressive field, and a cleaning 1

Christian Bell Biography company. Christian used the funds from work to pay his high school tuition and take the burden off of his struggling mother. Christian has also been very involved in his church, serving as an alter worker and being involved in youth minister in training (YMIT) at The Word Church (Cleveland, OH). It was here that Christian felt the calling on his life to become a minister in order to serve God and help win souls for Christ. This has really been the driving force for Christian’s personal and professional goals and aspirations. Christian was an honor roll student throughout his high school tenure being featured in The Free Times, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, and he was recognized as one of Gem Magazines top 100 hundred students in Ohio. Christian has been a very involved student as noted by recognition from many colleges showing interest in his attendance. However, Christian’s heart was set on Morehouse College a Historically Black College in Atlanta, Georgia that has produced great leaders such as, Dr. Martin Luther King, Reverend Dr. Otis Moss, Jr., Spike Lee, and Samuel L. Jackson among many others. Christian wants to walk in the footsteps of these great leaders by attending Morehouse College. Unfortunately, due to the demonstrable cost of college expenses it has made affordability an issue for Christian. He did not sit idle, but took the initiative to create the Chris Bell Scholarship Fund sponsored by the B.R.I.C.K. Program. The B.R.I.C.K. Program is operated by Mr. Timothy Roberts a pillar of light in the community and father and mentor to many young men. In addition, Corttrell Kinney, a Morehouse graduate and current doctoral student at Case Western Reserve University has helped to set-up Mr. Bell’s fundraising efforts. Attending Morehouse has been a dream of his that is finally becoming reality the only thing in the way of his goal if the funds needed to addend this wonderful institution. After getting an education Christian plans to become a minister and a lawyer and give back to his community by producing more leaders in the city of Cleveland.
