CLASS TITLE: Child Development Specialist
BASIC FUNCTION: The job of "Child Development Specialist” is done for the purpose of providing developmentally appropriate instruction to the infants and toddlers enrolled in the child development program, assist a certificated teacher in instructing students in the care of young children, providing effective infant and toddler care, directing an aide, and working in collaboration with a certificated teacher to provide child development lab exercises. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Monitor and direct aides, lab student volunteers, certificate program interns, ROP students, and all Child Development activities. Assist in the instruction of students and teen parents in planning and preparing nutritious meals and snacks; instruct teen parents in developmentally appropriate parenting practices; performs developmental assessments on each child with parent participation. Purchase all food and supplies needed for Child Development Center; plan and prepare nutritious meals and snacks. Perform daily health checks on infants and toddlers, and care for their basic needs. Collaborate with support agencies, the Teen Parent Coordinator, Teen Parent case manager/counselor.
OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned. Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Principles of child development. Instructional processes. Parenting techniques. Basic computer skills.

ABILITY TO: Develop individualized learning experiences for infants and toddlers. Sit for prolonged periods. Lift and carry a 40 pound child. Step over a 24-inch child-proof barrier. Maintain confidentiality of student records. Meet schedules and deadlines. Rapidly learn methods and materials used in a variety of instructional situations. Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception. Perform basic clerical functions. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 16 semester units in general education, including at least one course in each of the following areas: humanities and/or fine arts, social sciences, math and/or science, and English and/or language arts OR Complete an associate’s degree or higher in early childhood education or child development or a related field. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Child Development Teacher Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialling. Infant/Toddlers CPR/Pediatric First Aid. DOJ/FBI fingerprint clearance. TB clearance. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Classroom environment. Childcare/Daycare environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Bending at waist, kneeling or crouching. Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling light objects as assigned.
