SOAP PROJECT SUCCESS! In February, we held our first large-scale soap making event. Students and faculty members were able to make their own soap by using a mixture of olive oil and coconut oil and adding sodium hydroxide and water. With enough heat and stirring, the saponification reaction occurred and the mixture thickened. We were able to customize our soap using fresh herbs like lavender, as well as essential oils. After pouring the mixture into hexagonal molds, we allowed our soaps to cure for several weeks before being able to use our custom benzene-shaped soap. The Chem Club plans on keeping up our new soap making-tradition every winter quarter, so join us next year to make your own! Soap will be available for purchase for the low price of $3 per bar at the Picnic Day Magic Show.
LAST SAFETY TRAINING OPPORTUNITY! Join us Thursday, April 7th from 4-6pm in the Chemistry Courtyard for the LAST safety training opportunity before the Picnic Day Magic Show! Make sure you’ve completed the online UC Laboratory Safety Fundamentals course and the Cryogen safety course beforehand and send your certificates of completion to:

I am a third year Chemistry major and the Vice President of the Chem Club. I first got involved with the club last year and served as the treasurer. The club has allowed me to meet other chemistry majors and a lot of faculty in the department. It is very involved with department activities and also the famous Picnic Day Magic Show. Performing the demos is one of my favorite parts of being in the club. Outside of the club I enjoy biking, playing the bass, and pick-up basketball at the ARC. I also volunteer in the Franz research group here at Davis, a group primarily focused on catalysis. I’ve really enjoyed my time in the group, and the Chem Club actually introduced me to some faculty and the idea of undergraduate research at the start of it. After college I’m interested in going to graduate school. The club has a lot of activities planned for this Spring quarter; I highly encourage you to go!
OLIVE CENTER PRESENTATION AND TASTING The research director of the UC Davis Olive Center and adjunct faculty of the Food Science and Technology Department Dr. Selena Wang is hosting a special event for members to learn about the work carried out through the center. The event will consist of olive oil tastings, olive research discussion, tips on buying and properly storing oils in order to maintain the heath benefits of the product, and much more!
