KCC Hosts Students from Japanese Schools Kauaì CC was honored to host 2 sets of students from Japan. 30 students from Okinawa Christian University travelled to Kauaì CC to study Early Childhood Education and The students from Okinawa Christian University, in traditional garb (and new kicks) Hospitality and Tourism on Kauaì. International Month at KCC February has been a month highlighting our International awareness. Lead by the efforts of Kyoko Ikeda, our International Education Coordinator, the goal of this month is to spur Kauaì CC students’ interests to explore their multi-cultural roots, and to consider the possible international routes of their future. The focus of the month includes informing Kauaì CC students of international learning opportunities (study abroad & scholarships), honoring and celebrating Kauai's multicultural heritage, and increasing our international and global perspectives. February’s activities include presentations from Kauaì CC students about their study abroad experiences in Japan, Okinawa, New Zealand, and Easter Island, a demonstration of Japanese Martial Arts by a Katori and Aikido Master, and International lectures and movies.

In March, students come from a Consortium of Japanese national maritime colleges will visit Kauaì CC to learn from our Hawaiian Studies program about traditional Polynesian navigation as well as the tradition of voyaging canoes.  At home in Japan, these students are studying to become officers, captains, and engineers on large ships.

Canadian Matt played guitar while KCC’s Int’l Studies Coordinator Kyoko Ikeda Sword Master Tetsutaka Sugawara Sensei spoke to KCC students at opening the day. displayed his Katori and Aikido skills with the Lihue Kendio Club and Lihue Aiki Kai.

These Japanese students shared their Powerpoint presentations and then performed several traditional dances in the One Stop Center.

Kauaì Used Book Sale

American Culinary Federation 28th Annual Breakfast Rain had no chance to dampen the spirits of Kauai during the 28th Annual Breakfast. Safe under the canopies, the culinary students and KCC volunteers served over 1700 breakfasts. And what a feast! Fresh fruits, sausage, scrambled eggs, eggs benedict, omelets made to order, breads and pastries, ham and ribs, juices and coffee. Plates were piled high, and devoured while enjoying live music from some island friends. Each year, the breakfast is held to raise scholarship funds for the Culinary Program. Proceeds go to culinary students scholarships, new equipment and repairs to our existing gear. This year over 120 volunteers helped out with the event, preparing the feast, serving food, pouring drinks, directing traffic, clearing tables, and recycling the waste. Our thanks go out to all our volunteers, for such a wonderful display of help and community.

Side by side with our Breakfast was KCC’s 17th Annual Used Book sale. Bibliophiles galore wandered through the stacks of gently read volumes, and hundreds of books found new homes in the hands of anxious readers. The book sale was organized and staffed by our KCC family, with proceeds going to purchase new books for the LRC.

One Billion Rising

Across the world, it is estimated that 1 in every 3 women will experience abuse. One Billion Rising is a worldwide effort seeking to raise awareness to this plight. KCC’s PAU Violence Kauaì Group joined with the YWCA, & the UH Women’s Center in hosting the local event for a worldwide gathering. The gathering centered around a video entitled “Break the Chain.” The video features choreography by Debbie Allen. Close to 150 KCC students, faculty, staff, and community members joined in the event, with groups across the world, to express their solidarity with the cause. Many thanks to Patricia Wistinghausen and Cherie Mooy for coordinating this event.

Christina Martiney has been invited to attend the Sixth International Congress of Nematology, to be held in South Africa in May. Christina will be presenting her research: Time interval between sunn hemp cover cropping for nematode and crop management.

Every so often, it is important to celebrate excellence in our midst. Our recent induction of 16 new students to Phi Theta Kappa is a perfect time to do that. During the Spring 2014 Induction Ceremony into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, newly inducted members of the Alpha Pi Xi Chapter sign the chapter record book as part of the formal entry into the society.
