#SummerofVenturing Whether you’re already back in school or you still have a few more weeks of break, we all have to come to the realization that summer is coming to a close. Football games will be starting up soon and before we know it, we’ll be shoveling snow! But before we bid summer a farewell, why don’t we take a look at all of the adventures we’ve had this summer? Whether you went rafting down Class V rapids with your crew, or worked on staff for your council’s camp, we want to see and read about your awesome adventures! Therefore, on August 31, we want to get the hashtag #SummerofVenturing trending on social media! So start getting your photos gathered up, so on August 31 you can tell the world about your amazing Scouting adventures you had this summer! You never know, a potential new crew member may see your #SummerofVenturing post and think, “Hey! I want to have that kind of fun too! I’m going to join Venturing!” Join us August 5-7, 2016 for Summer’s Last Bash (SLB)! Taking place at Camp Illinek in Springfield, Illinois, the SLB will be a fun-filled weekend of on-the-water and beach activities to help you end your summer with a bang! Some of the many activities will include sailing, kayaking, canoeing, beach volleyball, ultimate frisbees, and tug of war. Make sure to stay tuned for more information as it comes! We will see you all there!

Crew Membership Chairman Crews that have membership growth and retention have three key components: a strong, vibrant Scouting program; engaged youth and adults; and someone who is responsible for membership. The Crew Membership Chairman is a member of the Crew committee who will focus on membership growth and retention of the unit. This new position is similar to the district or council membership chair who is responsible for growth in the district or the council. Membership volunteers are the backbone of our efforts to recruit more youth into the BSA. To impact the lives of youth in each crew, volunteers must be more engaged. Easy to say, but how do they do it? There are online resources for the Crew Membership Chairman available at http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Membership/Youth_Recruitment/Membership_Chairman/venturing.aspx.

These resources will assist those with this new responsibility in areas that include community projects, membership analyses, marketing, Boy Scouts to Venturing transition plans, and much more! Other resources to assist your council in membership can also be found at www.scouting.org/membership and http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Marketing/Recruiting2/VenturingToolBox.aspx. All volunteers responsible for membership in their council, district, or crew can find practical methods, new videos, and ideas for developing and implementing successful membership campaigns. Sometimes all you need to get on the right course is a good map. Here’s to steering your recruiting efforts in the right direction! -Taken from crventuring.org Our Central Region Venturing website has numerous tools and information to help your crew, district,

Updating Information Did you know that one way new Venturers can find your crew is by going to BeAScout.org? This website allows anyone to simply enter a zip code and find local units! It is crucial that your unit keeps its information up to date to insure potential members are able to contact you. Click here for a step-by-step guide on updating you unit's information. Contact your council if you have any questions. Also, if your unit has a website or Facebook group, please add it to our Crew Links page by sending your information to [email protected] Check out the Crew Links page here: http://crventuring.org/Links/Crew_Links -Jennifer Bullock

Did your crew do something adventurous this summer? We want to know what’s going on in the Central Region! On Monday, July 27, the National Executive Board ratified a resolution that removes the national restriction on openly gay adult leaders and employees. Read more about this important information on adult leadership policy change at http://scoutingwire.org/importantinformation-on-adult-leadershippolicy-change/.

Advisor’s Minute Hello Central Region, How has your summer been? I was talking with Jenny earlier this week, and we were discussing how so many of our amazing Venturers are out-and-about around the world participating in Scouting events and activities! As many of you know, Brian is over in Japan with Chris Harmon from Area 3, and a number of Venturers taking part of the 2015 World Scout Jamboree. I know I can’t wait to hear all the stories that they have, and many other adventures from all the across the globe! So what did you do this summer? Did you staff NAYLE or the Summit? Did you participate in a trek at Philmont? Did you attend a course at PTC? Did you go to Guatemala? Did you have an adventure with your family? We want to know! Please send your story to Jenny at [email protected] and it may end up in a future issue! What is your favorite part about summer? Is it the hot weather and swimming pools? Is it the break from school? Is it summer camp staff? Is it the BBQ sizzling and family gatherings? Is it time spent on vacations? For me, family vacations are my favorite. While we may not get to travel as a big family quite as often, even the little weekend getaways hold a special place in my heart. Sometimes the road trip to Wally World, or a week in the Great Outdoors can be just what the doctor ordered! (But, with Halloween approaching, I would caution you to steer clear of Camp Crystal Lake.)

So, whatever adventure you had this summer, I hope you had a Blast! I look forward to reading about your experiences helping to showcase why Venturing is so incredibly amazing!

Thank you for all that do you,

President’s Corner Hey Central Region, and happy August! Can you believe the summer is almost over! In the coming weeks, thousands of Venturers across the region will be getting ready to go back to school, move in to their first college dorm, or find a new adventure in life. Nothing is better than embarking on new journeys and adventures! Speaking of new adventurers, I'm writing to you from Kirara-hama, a reclaimed land near Yamaguchi City in Japan, the site of the 23rd World Scout Jamboree! I've been here for just over a week, working on the International Service Team, delivering the Outdoor Ethics program to over 30,000 scouts from around the world. This experience has been nothing short of a life changing adventure in every way. I've gained a new appreciation for Japanese food, and food from many different cultures. One of my favorite parts of the jamboree is eating meals with different contingents from around the world! The food is eye opening, but the experience comes to life with the people. I have met so many amazing youth and adults who have shaped my adventure. Now, what's a jamboree without program! Japan went all out in that arena this year. The opening show involved over 160 countries and was an experience I'll never forget. Next week, a contingent is going to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, for a special ceremony to remember what happened in Hiroshima in 1945 and to remind us all of the importance of world peace. I've got to get back to the jamboree, but before I leave, remember August 31st is #SummerOfVenturing day. Share your Venturing summer experiences on social media and join the national Venturing social media trend of 2015, Yours in Venturing,
