Cemetery Committee 17 July 2013 Members Present: Laura Bonde, Connie Eddy, Ann Johnson, Don Keith, Larry Krause, Tony Lizzadro, Jim MacKenzie Members Absent: Sue Krause Community Members: Richard Jilbert Discussion Items: • Appoint officers: o Co-Chairmen: Larry and Sue Krause • Field work to find grid markers continues. Grid map to mark progress created. Is located on a clipboard hanging by the door in the township office. • Township owns a copy of the MTA Cemetery Management book. All committee members should read. • Ordinance discussion and suggested changes or additions and questions: o State that fees to be determined by resolution o In pertinent sections, add to be penalized by civil infraction o Should ordinance specify that the sexton must be notified and/or present if any permanent changes, e.g. pouring cement boundaries, are to be made. o Section IX and X- Do we have records of what people paid for a lot if we state township will purchase back lots at the original purchase price? Should discuss with legal counsel if there is no record of purchase, will folks be re-charged to replace lot. o Michigan law states one embalmed person per 4 by 10 lot with the exception of a parent and child or two children who are to buried at the same time. MTA book makes no apparent mention of cremains. o Who owns the monument? o Section III, Part D: Should the sentence read “may limit” or “shall limit”? • Update the letter sent to holders of burial plots to contain information regarding the responsibilities of holders and information about forfeitures. Action Items: • Review ordinance for next meeting. • Read MTA Cemetery Management book. • Field work: Any and all welcome. Work as time allows. Tony, Connie and Township have metal detectors. • Look up in past minutes when did the township board limit the number of lots allowed for purchase to ten. • Update the letter sent to holders of burial plots to contain information regarding the responsibilities of holders and information about forfeitures.
New Business: • Richard Jilbert: What happened to the wooden headstone markers that were in the cemetery? The priest sent them to the diocese in Marquette. There is no record of where they were located in the cemetery before they were moved. Suggested we leave them there. Mr. Keith suggested with digitize the wooden markers to preserve the information. Mr. Jilbert also spoke to our famous residents of the cemetery: Tom Brown and Sam Hill.
