“There is no ultimatum to the Pope, but we must press forward: the faith is in danger!” It is the leader of the cardinals who wants to correct Bergoglio: "The confusion in the Church is evident. " Burke, a signer with Walter Brandmuller, Carlo Caffara and Joachim Meisner, then raised the issue of a possible "formal correction" of the Pope. And which instead, the previous magisterium had ruled out on several occasions, except in the case of a commitment to live as brother and sister for those divorced and remarried persons who cannot be separated for valid reasons. Brandmuller has said that the possible "formal correction" of the pope would be able to take place "in camera caritatis" [in the room of charity]. "In fact," Burke specifies, "I have never said that a public confrontation ought to occur. I agree with Cardinal Brandmüller, the first step would be to ask for a private meeting with the Holy Father to point out to him the unacceptable statements in Amoris laetitia, showing

how, in one way or another, they are not adequate to express what the Church He has always taught.” Q. There are those who claim that an institution of “formal correction" of the Holy Father does not exist in the discipline of the Church. Have you invented it? A. "Of course not. St. Thomas Aquinas in his theological writings proposes the problem of the possible formal correction of the pope and it is also in the discipline of the Church. It has been rarely used, there are some examples, and certainly we can envisage the case of a Pope who in some way might be able to fall into error. In this case, a correction must be made." Q. To claim that, in certain cases, the divorced and remarried who live together “more uxorio” [as husband and wife] can approach the Eucharist means to commit an error? A. "We could say that the statement is materially erroneous, because it is not possible to receive the sacraments for a person who is living more uxorio [as husband and wife] with someone who is not his or her spouse. To claim instead that this is possible constitutes a formal error that goes against what Jesus himself taught and has always been the teaching of the Church ". Q. Therefore, to claim this is a heresy? “No, it seems to me that it can qualify as an error, but we are dealing with a complex situation. Heresy is the obstinate denial or obstinate doubt, on the part of the baptized, of a truth that one must believe by divine and Catholic faith. One heresy could be that of one who sustains that there do not exist intrinsically evil acts; to affirm this would be to say something contrary to the doctrine of the Church and would clearly be a heresy. The affirmation about access to the sacraments of which we were speaking a while ago, on the other hand, refers to a practice that contradicts two doctrines: that of indissolubility of matrimony and that of the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. "This is totally false, we are united and that's why I do not want to make any speculation about possible next steps to be taken for the initiative that we have undertaken. If we do it, we will do it after having confronted him. " Q. But do you still think the Pope will respond to your dubia? A. "We are always waiting for a response from the Pope as our supreme pastor. To not expect a response would be disrespectful of his office. " Q. For many, the answer has already been given: the four cardinals are merely "doctors of law", severe and insensitive. A. "It seems to me that the moral law is not something that imprisons a person, it is exactly the opposite: the moral law frees the person and directs him to do good. For the person of faith, we must say that the Divine law liberates, and it is not a negative thing. And then to teach the moral law is a

great act of love of neighbor because it points the way to authentic freedom and happiness. It is impossible to claim that a person can find some form of happiness while sinning." Q. The Pope has spoken of encountering "malevolent" resistance that "presents itself when the devil inspires wicked intentions." Did you all feel addressed specifically here? A. "I do not know to whom the pope was referring, personally I certainly did not feel guilty, because it is not the description of my position." Q. With your public initiative, does it seem to you to be contributing to dividing the Church rather than uniting it? A. "What divides is falsehood and ambiguity, the truth always unites. It is absurd to say that four cardinals who ask five reasonable questions, and of fundamental importance for all Christians, are acting in a way to divide the Church. We are serving the Petrine office, giving the Pope the opportunity to confirm us in the teaching of the Church, faced with a situation that is proving ambiguous in practice." Q. Do other cardinals and prelates endorse the merit of the questions you have asked? A. "We are not only four. I personally know other cardinals who fully endorse the dubia.” Q. Why so much noise for a problem that many have a hard time understanding? A. “We are dealing here with a question that concerns the Church in a profound way: matrimony and family, which is its fruit, and they constitute the foundation of the very life of the Church. Our task is not to lose ourselves in difficult or vague questions; we are simply giving our contribution to the growth of the Church in the most elementary cell of life. “ Q. Ultimately, the only crime that remains is that of being intransigent traditionalists? A. Inoltre noi ab­ biamo comunicato in modo molto rispet­ toso i cinquedubia al Papa e quando non ci è stata data risposta abbiamo deciso, per il bene delle anime, di rendere pubblico che ci sono dei dubbi e che tutti i fedeli sono chiamati a prestare attenzione». Burke, firmatario con Walter Brandmuller, Carlo Caffarra e Joachim Meisner, ha poi sollevato il tema di una possibile «cor­ rezione formale» del Papa. E secondo quanto riportato da diversi media italiani estrapolando un'intervista pubblicata ne­ gli Usa, Burke avrebbe dato un ultimatum per questa «correzione formale» che sa­ rebbe scaduto dopo le feste di Natale. In realtà non esiste «assolutamente nessuna scadenza», conferma il cardinale Burke. «Molti media hanno frainteso. In quell’in­ tervista negli Stati Uniti mi avevano chie­ sto quali sarebbero stati i prossimi passi rispetto ai dubia presentati al Santo pa­ tì re, e io ho semplicetti ente detto che nulla poteva succedere in quel momento visto che stavamo per vivere il tempo liturgico di Natale e dell’Epifania. Solo dopo si sa­ rebbe eventualmente pensato a come pro­ cedere, ma di certo non era un ultimatum per un confronto con il Papa». I dubbi ruotano intorno all'accesso all’eu­ caristia per i divorziati risposati che con­ vivono more uxorio, accesso che, in certi casi, la Amoris laetitia permetterebbe. E che, invece, il magistero precedente aveva escluso in più occasioni, fatto salvo il caso di un impegno a vivere come fratello e so­ rella per quei divorziati risposati che non possono separarsi per validi motivi, Brandmuller ha dichiarato che l’eventua­ le «correzione formale» del Papa potreb­ be avvenire in «camera caritatis». «Infat­ ti», specifica Burke, «io non ho mai detto che sarebbe dovuto avvenire un con franto pubblico. Sono d’accordo con il cardinale Brandmuller, il primo passo potrebbe es­ sere chiedere un incontro privato con il Santo pad re per indicargli le affermazioni inaccettabili di Amoris laetitia, mostran­ do come in un modo o nell’altro non sono adeguate a esprimere quello che la Chiesa ha sempre insegnato». suoi scritti teologici pone il problema del­ l’eventuale correzione formale del Papa e anche la disciplina della Chiesa ne tratta. È stato raram ente utilizzato, ci sono degli esempi, e certamente si può ipotizzare il caso di un Papa che in qualche modo possa cadere in errore. In questo caso occorre provvedere a una correzione». Sostenere che, in certi casi, i divorziati r i­ sposati che convivono more uxorio posso­ no accedere all’eucaristia significa com­ piere un errore? «Potremmo dire che l’afFermazione è m a­ terialmente erronea, perché non è possi­ bile riceverei sacramenti per una persona che sta vivendo more uxorio con qualcuno che non è suo sposo o sua sposa. affermare che questo è possibile consiste in un errore formale che va contro quanto Gesù stesso ha insegnato ed è sempre sta­ to l’insegnamento della Chiesa». Quindi, sostenere questo è un'eresia? «No, mi sembra si possa qualificare come errore, ma si tratta di una situazione com­ plessa. Eresia è ostinata negazione o dub­ bio ostinato, da parte di un battezzato, di una verità che si deve credere per fede di­ vina e cattolica. Un’eresia potrebbe essere quella dì chi sostiene che non esistono atti morali intrinsecamente cattivi, afferma­ re questo sarebbe dire qualcosa di contra­ rio alla dottrina della Chiesa e sarebbe chiaramente un’eresia. L'affermazione sull’accesso ai sacramenti di cui parlavo

poco fa, invece, si riferisce a una prassi che contraddice due dottrine: quella sul­ l’indissolubilità del matrimonio e quella sulla presenza reale di Gesù nell’eucari­ stia. In prima battuta possiamo dire che certamente è un errore». Torniamo ai dubia. C e stato chi ha insi nuato che i quattro cardinali siano fra lo­ ro divisi. È vero? «Questo è totalmente falso, siamo uniti e per questo io non voglio fare alcuna spe­ culazione su eventuali prossimi passi da compiere in merito all’iniziativa che ab­ biamo preso. Se lo faremo, lo faremo dopo esserci confrontati». Ma voi pensate ancora che il Papa rispon­ derà ai vostri dubia? «Noi stiamo sempre attendendo una ri­ sposta dal Papa come nostro supremo pa­ store. Non attenderci una risposta non sa­ rebbe rispettoso del suo ufficio». Per multila risposta c’è già: i quattro car­ dinali sono soltanto «dottori dulia legge», duri e insensìbili. «A me pare che la legge morale non sia qualcosa che imprigiona una persona, è esattamente il contrario: la legge morale libera la persona e la orienta a compiere il bene. Infatti, quando non c’è rispetto per la legge morale si realizzano situazioni caotiche e moralmente si verifica una sor­ ta di imprigionamento. Per le persone di fede noi dobbiamo dire che la legge duina libera, e non è una cosa negativa. E poi In­ segnare la legge morale è un grande atto di carità verso il prossimo perché indica la via alla libertà autentica e alla felicità. È impossibile affermare che una persona possa trovare una qualche forma di felici­ tà peccando». Il Papa ha detto di incontrare una resi stenza «malevola» che «sipresenta quan­ do il demonio ispira intenzioni cattive». Vi siete sentiti chiamati in causa? «Io non so a che cosa si stesse riferendo il Papa, Personalmente non mi sono certo sentito colpevole, perché non è la descri­ zione della mia posizione». Con la vostra iniziativa pubblica non vi sembra di contribuire a dividere la Chie­ sa anziché unirla? «Ciò che divide è la falsità e l’ambiguità, la verità unisce sempre. È assurdo dire che

Stiamo servendo l’ufficio petrino dan­ do al Papa l’occasione di confermarci nel­ l’insegnamento della Chiesa, di fronte a una situazione che si sta mostrando am­ bigua nei fatti». Altri cardinali o prelati condividono il merito delle domande che avete posto? «Non siamo soltanto quattro. Personalmenteconosco altri cardinali che condivi­ dono pienamente i dubia». Perché tanto rumore per un problema che molti faticano a comprendere? «Qui stiamo trattando una questione che

riguarda profondamente la Chiesa: il ma­ trimonio e la famiglia, che è il suo frutto, e costituiscono il fondamento della vita stessadellaChiesa.il nostro non è un per­ derci dietro questioni ricercate o difficili, stiamo semplicemente dando il nostro contributo alla crescita della Chiesa nella sua più elementare cellula di vita». In definitiva, l’unica colpa che vi reste­ rebbe è quella di essere degli inguaribili tradizionalisti? «Beh, tutte queste etichette sono molto comode per non affrontare il nucleo della nostra premura, che è la vita della Chiesa. I dubia, piaccia o non piaccia, sono indi­ rizzati a questo».
