(Submissions are now closed) Candidate Information: Yorkshire and Humber Clinical Academic Internship for Non-Medical Clinicians, Post Masters level What is it? National Institute for Health Research, Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care Yorkshire and Humber (NIHR CLAHRC YH) is delighted to launch a scheme to support a short-term research placement for non-medical clinicians across the region. Funded by Health Education England (HEE) working across Yorkshire and the Humber, this scheme has been designed to offer an introduction to professionals who are interested in a clinical academic career, and provides a ‘next step’ after completing a Master’s degree to help build a portfolio of research experience. Why are we doing it? While research is now core business for the NHS, there has been limited involvement of nonmedical clinicians, including nurses, midwives, allied health professionals (AHPs) and other patient facing clinicians, in undertaking research. A significant barrier to these clinicians in getting involved in research is that while they may be interested, they often simply do not know what is involved, or how to go about it. This pilot scheme proposes research “tasters” or short-term internships with established research groups in order to develop skills and confidence in understanding the research process. We hope that this will also result in support and mentorship for those wishing to undertake their own research, and ultimately become research active National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) faculty members. What does it involve? This is an opportunity to fund up to TEN short-term research taster experiences for non-medical clinicians. Funds of £5,000 are available for each internship placement to provide funds to backfill the clinical time of successful applicants. One of the objectives of the scheme is meaningful engagement with NHS middle management to support the development of such initiatives. It is important to discuss, negotiate, and agree the backfill arrangements of this protected time with your manager as well as think about an appropriate academic placement. We will ask for your manager’s written agreement to this on the application form, as well as the name of the academic you want to link with. Each applicant will participate in between 25-35 day experience (up to the costs of £5,000), which will be delivered over six to twelve months. We will work with the academic teams to to give participants exposure to a range of research roles, including direct participation in an ongoing research project with the support of an experienced research supervisor. Our learning from previous schemes is that this opportunity should offer a flexible resource that will optimise the best use of the protected time in a research project. Placements can be done in blocks of time (ie week blocks), or in shorter slots of say a day a week, and the spread of this contact can also be flexible, with the only limitation being that the experience has to be undertaken between April 2016-March 2017. However, successful candidates should attend the introductory session in spring 2016 and the review session in early 2017.

Where can placements take place? Placements can take place within;  Yorkshire and Humber University HSR department/Nursing or relevant field or  NIHR Infrastructure such as CLAHRC (http://clahrc-yh.nihr.ac.uk ), Health Technology Cooperative (HTC), Devices for Dignity (D4D) (http://www.devicesfordignity.org.uk), and Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit (LMBRU) (http://lmbru.leeds.ac.uk) What will be expected of me? Candidates will be expected to negotiate time with their manager, and identify research teams they would wish to work with. Placement opportunities can be offered in CLAHRC YH themes, and the other NIHR infrastructure, or academic departments in the region. Introductions can also be negotiated through CLAHRC YH, but you are also encouraged to explore options for yourself in order to follow your own research interests. Ideally these placements will be linked to nationally funded projects. In addition, but linked to placement activities, successful applicants will be encouraged to  

Submit a publication in a peer reviewed journal, and/or presentation their work at a national conference (each successful candidate has a dissemination budget of £1,500) A career plan to develop next steps to becoming research active (including NIHR CAT fellowships)
