CALL FOR PAPERS PHYCOM: Physical Communication Journal (ELSEVIER) Special Issue on: Advances in Ultra-Wideband Wireless Communications Since the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval in 2002, Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology has garnered significant momentum in both academia and industry for applications in wireless communications. UWB systems are now emerging across a variety of commercial and military applications. The deepened understanding of UWB technology has also triggered research and development of a plethora of new applications. For example, the unique UWB features such as low complexity, low cost, low power consumption and coexistence with other systems make UWB technology a promising candidate for wireless body area networks (WBAN). To meet the rising needs for ranging and positioning in wireless communication devices especially in environments where GPS is ineffective, UWB signals offer the natural possibility of high-precision localization and navigation. In addition, the below-the-noise-floor operation and flexible bandwidth access of UWB radio technology make it an ideal starting point for futuristic technologies aimed at lessening spectrum scarcity. Such emerging frontiers pose new challenges as well as opportunities to UWB research, including channel modeling and prediction, signal design, synchronization, transceiver design, signal processing architecture, multi-access techniques, UWB-particular networking and security concerns, dynamic spectrum sensing and access, and information theoretic aspects. The goal of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions from signal processing, communications, networking, and other related areas, that address various challenges and advance the design of UWB systems. Original papers previously unpublished and not currently under review by another journal are solicited that cover one or more of the following topics, but are not limited to: • • • • • • •

Channel Modeling, Estimation and Prediction UWB Signal Design Synchronization and Tracking Equalization and Detection Multi-Access Techniques and Performance Interference Modeling and Suppression UWB-Based Localization and Navigation

• • • • • •
