Tribal Health Systems in India Tata Steel’s Tribal Cultural Society will be organising the 3rd edition of ‘Samvaad – A Tribal Conclave’ from 15th-19th November, 2016, in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. Samvaad serves as a platform for tribal communities from across India to meet and discuss issues of concern. Tribals constitute 8.6% of India’s total population, i.e. over 100 million people. Many tribal communities fare dismally on health indicators, with nutrition being the key issue. At the same time, tribal communities are known for their knowledge, innovations, practices and utilisation of natural resources, all embodied in a sustainable lifestyle. Such wisdom is put to use in their health system too which gets passed down to generations, but, remains undocumented. The ethno-medicinal use of certain plant species by tribal communities is a topic of great interest. Globally, there has been a renewed attention and interest in the use of traditional medicine systems. As the interest in tribal health systems rises, and it awaits wider application and recognition, there is a need to preserve this body of knowledge in a systematic manner. This year’s theme for Samvaad is ‘Tribal Health Systems’ which will not only discuss the pertinent health issues faced by tribal communities in our country, but, also bring into focus the traditional health knowledge systems developed over centuries.
