The individual applied practice experience is a component of the culminating experience for students in the Community and International Health, Epidemiology, Public Health Nutrition, Public Health Policy and Management, and Social and Behavioral Sciences concentrations of MPH Program at the NYU College of Global Public Health. Students undertake this applied practice experience individually at their respective sites. For students in Epidemiology and Social & Behavioral Sciences this applied practice may lead to the development of their thesis. The applied practice experience enables each student to engage in activities that align with their career goals and help them develop skills relevant to future employment in public health. Students engage in coursework to support this experience.

What is the Group Applied Practice/Capstone?

The group applied practice/Capstone is the culminating experience for students in the Global Health concentration of the MPH Program at the NYU College of Global Public Health. Students work as a group on this applied practice/Capstone experience. The group applied practice/Capstone provides an important resource to organizations - a team of committed students dedicated to addressing its needs while allowing students to demonstrate fundamental public health competencies and apply what they have learned during their MPH studies. While working on their Capstone projects students enroll in a twosemester Capstone course and work with a faculty mentor.

In preparing for these applied practice experience, students work on a learning contract and deliverables with their respective sites before starting the project. What are examples of potential Individual Applied Practice activities?  Conducting a needs assessment  Conducting an evaluation study  Identifying relevant evidence-based programs  Developing a health promotion program  Designing and implementing an evidence-based program  Conducting an analysis of organizational performance  Developing a grant proposal  Analyzing policy formation  Developing a data code book

What are examples of potential Capstone activities?  Analyzing regional data  Developing and piloting survey tools  Conducting community needs assessment  Devising policy recommendations  Designing an epidemiologic study  Evaluating a project or policy  Developing methodology for data collection  Identifying surveillance priorities  Working on research programs

Who can apply? Organizations interested in working with students to develop innovative solutions to global public health concerns, specifically organizations that:      

Have been operating for at least 5 years Offer a project consistent with the primary mission of your organization and that addresses a global public health issue, has a realistic scope, and is technically feasible Can host students at their site from late-December to late-January to conduct elements of the Capstone project Are able to facilitate IRB approval, when necessary Have the appropriate human resources and financial capacity to undertake the Capstone project and team, including two committed liaisons Have dedicated staff who can work with/mentor students



Work with students on a learning contract that delineates activities and learning associated with the project We welcome projects from US based organizations focused on domestic issues as well as those focused on non US/international public health issues
