Meeting/Workshop
Date: Friday, January 20, 2017 Time: 9:30 am Program: Teachers as Promoters of Psychological Wellness Clinician: Dr. Charles Turon Location: Puckett Auditorium at Florida College, 119 N. Glen Arven Ave., Tampa, FL
Over the past several years, MTNA has taken a leadership role in promoting musicians' wellness and educating music teachers in injury prevention. Recognizing that psychological well-being is as important a concern as physiological health, these efforts are now being broadened to include psychological wellbeing as well as physical health. Although most music teachers recognize that teaching music inevitably includes psychological components, viewing the teacher as a promoter of mental health may involve venturing into territory outside our areas of training and expertise. This workshop will address the boundary lines which help music teachers know how they can promote the psychological health of their students without stepping into areas better dealt with by mental health professionals. Other specific questions to be discussed include:
What are some of the specific ways that we can proactively promote mental health? What are the boundaries that characterize a healthy teacher-student relationship? What are the teacher's responsibilities in this area? How can we best prepare ourselves for this role?
