News Beat Categories OUTSTANDING HEALTH & HEALTH CARE COVERAGE This award will honor an outstanding in-depth analysis, feature or investigative reporting that documents the unique experiences of ethnic and immigrant communities in addressing health and health care issues. Topics might include, for example, patient(s) profiles; analysis of the impact of policy changes on how health care is delivered; issues on aging; or success stories in expanding health care access or breakthrough treatments, etc. OUTSTANDING COVERAGE OF THE ENVIRONMENT This award will honor an outstanding in-depth analysis, feature or investigative reporting on environmental challenges as perceived and experienced by ethnic and immigrant communities – from climate change and energy conservation to toxic waste, air pollution, and access to public parks and public space. Topics might include, for example, profiles of communities adapting to changing climate conditions; the spread of urban gardens; how immigrant farmers cope with drought, etc. OUTSTANDING COVERAGE OF POLITICS & THE 2016 ELECTIONS This award will honor an outstanding in-depth analysis, feature or investigative reporting on the political forces affecting ethnic and immigrant communities, such as homeland politics, grassroots movements and community activism, or national, state, and local election campaigns. Topics might include, for example, profiles of firsttime candidates; reports about voter enfranchisement; features on home country politics at it impacts local communities; investigative reports on how elected officials are or are not responding to constituencies, etc. OUTSTANDING EDUCATION COVERAGE This award will recognize an outstanding in-depth analysis, feature or investigative reporting on education (from pre-school through k-12, college, post-graduate and vocational training) as it relates to specific ethnic and immigrant communities. Topics might include, for example, profiles of education innovators; success stories in narrowing education disparities; debates over charter schools; changes in school disciplinary policies, etc. OUTSTANDING COVERAGE OF IMMIGRATION This award will honor an outstanding in-depth analysis, feature or investigative reporting that spotlights the experiences of immigrants and refugees, changes in immigration policies, and the struggle for immigrant rights. Topics might include, for example, analyses of how individual immigrants or communities are impacting the wider society; profiles of immigrant/refugee family survival strategies; features about coalition building efforts to defend immigrant communities, etc.

OUTSTANDING COVERAGE OF ARTS, CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT This award will honor outstanding reporting on the diversity of California's cultural life as reflected by the arts, food and entertainment of immigrant or ethnic communities. OUTSANDING SPORTS COVERAGE This award will honor outstanding reporting that explores the growing diversity of sports in California through the skills and passions of its diverse ethnic and immigrant populations.

Spotlight Awards OUTSTANDING CROSS-CULTURAL REPORTING This award will honor exceptional coverage of issues affecting communities outside those served by respective ethnic media outlets, or at issues related to inter-ethnic or race relations across communities. Topics might include, for example, writers' coverage of police violence impacting communities outside their own; interethnic alliances in defense of immigrant rights, etc. OUTSTANDING COVERAGE OF GENDER/LGBTQ ISSUES This award will honor exceptional coverage of issues relating to gender identity or equality, and those impacting the LGBTQ community. Topics might include, for example, the gender pay gap; the "bathroom bill"; LGBTQ rights; the role of gender in the 2016 election, etc. EMERGING YOUTH VOICE AWARD This award will honor outstanding reporting or commentary by youth (under age 25) on youth culture and issues important to young people in California. Topics might include, for example, youth perspectives on efforts to promote civic engagement; educational challenges and opportunities; family dynamics; social justice, etc.

Special Recognition COMMUNITY ADVOCACY AWARD This award will be presented by NAM to an ethnic media organization for its public advocacy on a specific issue impacting its own community and/or California. Advocacy could include consistent reporting on an untold or controversial topic/issue; raising public awareness through organizing or sponsoring events; promoting policy change through editorials; and public speaking. Entrant should submit a 300-word description of the outlet's journalism/media work in line with these guide points, as well as some written examples and web links if available.

Please note that all categories are open to Print/Online AND Broadcast (TV & Radio) entries. Categories are open to reported stories, commentaries, and op-eds. PRINT/ONLINE: One story or up to three from a series. For in-language stories, English translations are required. BROADCAST: One story or up to three reports/video segments from a series. Segments should be no longer than a maximum of 10-minutes each. For TV/radio submissions, judges should be provided with an English transcript or summary of the segments. JUDGING CRITERIA Judges will consider originality of topic, depth of reporting, compelling storytelling, and a unique approach, such as collaborative reporting across multiple media outlets.

CALL FOR CALIFORNIA ETHNIC MEDIA AWARD NOMINATIONS

Recognizing journalistic excellence, NAM invites news organizations (print, online, radio and television) located in and serving California's ethnic minority and newcomer communities, as well as individuals whose work is published or aired by these media outlets, to submit entries published between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016. Entries may be in the language of the publication such as English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Arabic or other relevant languages. Participants are required to submit their own English translations/summaries. ABOUT NEW AMERICA MEDIA New America Media is the country’s first and largest national collaboration of ethnic news organizations. Founded by the non-profit Pacific News Service in 1996, NAM (formerly New California Media) is headquartered in California, where ethnic media are the primary source of news and information for over half of the state’s new ethnic majority. NAM’s goal is to promote the editorial visibility and economic viability of this critical sector of American journalism, as a way to build inclusive public discourse in our increasingly diverse, global society. NAM produces and aggregates editorial content from and for the ethnic media sector and develops pioneering marketing services on behalf of corporations, foundations, and non-profits who are targeting ethnic media and ethnic communities.

[ ] Each entry must be submitted with a separate online entry form and a $15 filing fee (payable online to New America Media). [ ] A story/series/segment may only be submitted in one category. Please select the category which best fits your entry. [ ] We reserve the right to move an entry from one category to another. [ ] Each entrant is limited to a maximum of 3 entries per category. [ ] Entrants are required to submit English-language translations/summaries of entries written in a language other than English. [ ] If the judges deem it appropriate, no award may be presented in a particular category. [ ] Please note that stories that were commissioned by NAM such as fellowship or freelance stories are not eligible for entry. NAM employees are not eligible to submit entries.
