BVA Regular Meeting 10/5/11 Meeting called to order by Interim Board President Brian Greenshields 7:05pm. Establish Quorum Brian Greenshields Cathy Gomes Bill Shaw Matt Binder Bob Evans Marilyn McMasters Nancy Henderson Ben Nurse Consent Items Nancy makes motion to approve the consent items of the agenda and the meeting minutes from 9/28. Bob seconds. All in favor. Motion passed. Consent items approved. Comments from Community Sarah Laflan – is concerned that the handbook is not out yet. Comment about moving school – she likes this location, but there is support to move back to Bay View. Cecile McLean – volunteer policy – wants it on the next agenda. 1058 community hours! 8 parents have also made their 30hours/year. Marilyn McMasters – Whole Foods fundraiser. Marilyn to look into it more. Cathy – Rotary club to donate 3rd grade thesauruses. Carol Royal – wanted to know if the teachers are getting help. The kids bathrooms need to be fixed by MPUSD. Jo Greenshields – wondering about the fire marshal inspection. Mr. Barlas explained that the MPUSD Facilities Director has a inspection on file from June and that the MFD will be coming to look at the plan for emergency egress. Brian asked that MFD comes out again. Camilo Wilson – encourage Board to send emails about meeting and send out minutes. There has been no direct communications from the Board to the parents. Camilo feels that the paragraph about not responding to the community comments is illegal from the Brown Act perspective. Also concerns about the CVO meeting tomorrow. He feels that there hasn’t been enough communication. Brian explained the format of the meeting and the approval of the by-‐laws. He would also like to see some way for the parents to connect to each other. Facebook, emails, etc. Additionally he would like to see the by-‐ laws changed to make the Board President the CEO, not the principal. Model lessons, reading about techniques,, watching videos. Teacher Support Board and Mitch met and discussed general support for all teachers . Mitch reported that BVA has partnered with BTSA program to help new teachers. All 5 new teachers have started the 2 year program. Coach to come here and the teachers will go observe other master teachers. Another idea was that the teachers goes into each other classrooms and help each other. Matt brought up the idea of having the teachers meeting collaboratively to try to work together. Mitch indicated that once a week the teachers are working together. Brian thought that this might be a good discussion for the advisory committee. Cathy asked about the student make-‐up and if the teachers have enough support with the active students. Sarah brought up about bringing on an aide. Mitch will put together a volunteer handbook will the help of Cecile. Mitch is going into the classrooms informally
right now. The advisory committee is recommending the formal evaluation process. Ben wants to see Mitch in the classrooms now to see what the issues are and how to handle them. Student-‐Parent-‐Family Handbook Discussion and changes made on the handbook. Bob makes motion to adopt the student-‐ parent-‐family handbook and policies herein. Marilyn seconds. Discussion: Bill mentioned that we are now adopting a number of policies. All in favor. Motion passes. CVO Meeting By-‐laws have been drafted. Brian presented about the creation of the CVO, why it is created and how it will work. Discussion around the meeting and the by-‐laws. Parent Contribution Letter Ben makes motion to adopt contribution letter. Marilyn seconds. No discussion. Motion passes. Prop 39 Due November 1st. Discussion around asking for Bay View. Separate campaign to get community and political support. Brian, Bob and Bill . Cathy, Matt, Bill and Brian to help with the application. Look at the CCSA web site. Closed Session Return to open session Report: Speech therapist, Laura Heyden, was approved to be hired for $55/hr. After School Clubs Cathy proposes letting some of these clubs come in. Good News Club and the Girl Scouts. Liability insurance needs to be evaluated and then we will allow the clubs to come in as long as they know that they might be moved around as our programs are developed. Principal Report CCSA conference Feb 27-‐ March 1st. Computers from MIIS will be used for computer labs. Playground will be resurfaced over Fall break. Teachers are developing report cards. Agenda for next meeting 10/19 Volunteer policy and children riding in cars with volunteers. Communications from the Board to the community – respond to emails, re-‐examine the community comments in the agenda. Should we change by-‐laws to not have the principal at the CEO, but put that on the Board President.
