BAY VIEW ACADEMY CHARTER SCHOOL BOARD MEETING MINUTES 18 Oct 2016 A meeting of the Board of Directors (the “Board”) of BVA Academy (the “School”) was held on 18 Oct 2016 at 6:15 PM at the School’s lower campus. The following members of the Board were present: Brian, Tone, William, Jayme, Darwin, Fernando, Linda, Sheri, Daisy, Soo, Nancy Consent Agenda: The Board VOTED to approve the consent agenda minus the 20 September Board Meeting minutes as they were not yet ready. Administration Update: Catherine briefed the board on family share, class openings, ADA and free-and-reduced lunch stats, BVA Pride Assemblies, and Student Council activities. Alicia briefed the Board on lower campus accomplishments and activities to include choir, the Art Club, Math Club, CHOMP Kids Eat Right, Festival of Feet and Crazy Hair Day, and the lower grades music enrichment. A shout out to Tim for his efforts! She also highlighted the new energy in the K – 4 reading program as the result of our new reading specialist. CVO Update: Sheri reminded the Board about the on-going raffle and the upcoming Spooky Spaghetti dinner. Treasurer: Jayme mentioned that the Finance Committee was going to meet to look at actual expenditures and prepare the 1st Interim budget for approval in November. Governance: William stated the focus of the Governance Committee’s efforts was on cleaning up the committee structure and descriptions, finding a better way to interface with the CVO, and beginning a serious School policies review. Academic Excellence:
Tuna stated the committee was working on a Promotion and Retention policy as well an Academic Honesty policy. The committee was also starting to draft an academic excellence strategic plan and reminded the Board of the 2018 Charter renewal. Development Committee: Soo stated the committee was working on a short and long term fundraising strategy. Immediate priority was building a plan to maximize “Monterey County Gives.” Action/Discussion Items: 1) Karina briefed the Board on the Schools’ detailed technology plan to include current layout and future requirements. 2) The Board started the discussion on how to better integrate CVO with the Board for fundraising and soliciting parent feedback. 3) The Board VOTED to approve Tone Larsen’s extension as a BVA Board member with a new expiration date of 18 Oct 2018. 4) Discussed with Mr. Ted Lim from the Orosco Group their intention to build a gym/coffee house at the vacant Fresh and Easy site on Del Monte Blvd. The Board RESOLVED to support the basic premise, and Brian will write a letter to that effect. 5) The Board VOTED to approve an organizational structure for the school that includes a Head of School position and two Vice Principals. BVA can now advertise for its known leadership vacancies for next year. Respectfully Submitted
