March 15, 2015

COMMUNAL RECONCILIATION SERVICE

KofC Bishop Wurm Assembly Ladies will hosting a Quarter Auction on Sunday, March 22, 2-4 PM (Doors open at 1:00 PM) at St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Church Hall, 2650 Parker Rd, Building #8. Admission $10 buys you one Auction Paddle. Bring your rolls of quarters for the Auction! (Purchases from our 20+ Vendors could buy you more paddles!) Come and join us for a “Fun” afternoon! Auction items range from 25 cents to $1.00. Call Chris Herbert at 837-5526 to purchase your tickets or to reserve your table.

MARCH 17, 6:30 PM This Tuesday, March 17 at 6:30 PM we will celebrate a Communal Reconciliation Service here at St. Ferdinand. Lent is the perfect time to seek God’s mercy. God is constantly calling on us to use our talents and gifts for His people. This is our greatest sin, i.e. holding back on the Lord. It’s time to confess that we haven't done what we could have for the Lord. Make a good confession and not jut a superficial examination of the 10 commandments. I don’t believe that I am hearing “the real sins” in the confessional! We all fall short of the Lord’s expectations—confess. Confessions are also heard on Saturday afternoons at 3:30 PM or by calling the rectory to speak to one of the priests.

“PARFUMERIE”

Copies of The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic by Matthew Kelly are available in the Gathering Space while supplies last. This book is part of a new archdiocesan evangelization effort that Archbishop Robert J. Carlson recently announced called "Dynamic Catholic Alive!", a four-year archdiocesan-wide collaborative of parishes, offices, apostolates and individual Catholics to build up the Church as part of our universal baptismal call. Each year will build upon one of the four signs that Kelly identifies in his book: prayer, study, generosity and evangelization. This Lent is a wonderful opportunity to participate by reading this outstanding book. For more information, please contact the Parish Office.

"THE FOUR SIGNS OF A DYNAMIC CATHOLIC"

DYNAMIC CATHOLIC - THE ELEMENTS OF CONFESSION In Confession, there are 4 essential elements for the penitent: 1) Examination of Conscience (careful reflection on our sins), 2) Contrition (interior repentance), 3) Confession (telling one’s sin to the priest, and 4) Satisfaction (carrying out our penance). There are many great guides to confession available. Don’t worry if you can’t remember all of the responses. Priests are always willing to help you make a good confession. Do you know the difference between perfect and imperfect contrition? Archstl.org/dynamic

Health Ministry

A quick online search of Aspartame will provide you with numerous opinions about the artificial sweetener. The studies sited in a previous bulletin article were not as current on the updated studies provided by the FDA and American Cancer Society. The study linked aspartame to some cancers has been shown to be invalid. The newer studies done under the strictest evidence based practices. Aspartame is made of the two amino acids phenylalanine and aspartic acid, and the alcohol methanol. All of the health concerns regarding this sweet supplement is a result of what those three things can do to the body. Anything we take in to our bodies, in high enough doses, can be harmful In the end, almost everything we take in needs to fall within a certain range to be beneficial. Outside of this range can be harmful. The phrase “everything in moderation” is never so true. Like any food additive evaluated by the FDA, there is a process that takes place before manufacturers are allowed to put it in our foods. When the FDA first approved aspartame as an additive, there were numerous controversies surrounding its approval. Those controversies revolved around the studies the FDA looked at, advocating aspartames safety. Since its initial distribution to the masses, there have been countless new studies performed on Aspartames safety. Numerous other reviews of the research have been conducted by several agencies, including the FDA and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners have a long history of controversy. Aspartame was developed around the time the FDA banned the artificial sweeteners cyclamate (Sucaryl) and saccharin (Sweet’N Low). Lab tests showed that massive doses of these two compounds caused cancer and other disorders in laboratory animals. Congress later canceled the ban on saccharin, and the FDA lifted its ban nearly 15 years later. Though cyclamate is available in more than 50 countries, it is not sold in the U.S. From the beginning, there was public concern about aspartame but as more research confirmed its safety, it gained acceptance for everyday use. The debate about artificial sweeteners continues. However, the consumption of aspartame by people conscious about their sugar intake continues to soar. The effects of diet soda on teeth (the acidity in the drink) and effects of replacing water with a diet soda still remain as harmful side effects. This Lent the health ministry is encouraging everyone to focus on making healthy drink choices.

ASPARTAME RISK REBUTTAL According to the latest studies of the American Cancer Society (ACS) the Risk of contracting any kind of Cancer from ingestion of Aspartame is negligible. In fact the benefits of consuming Aspartame over sugar are off the chart. As with most scientific studies there is validity limit. Thus the ACS has set a aspartame daily limit of 97 packets of sweetener or 30-12 ounce cans of soda for a 150-lb adult.

MEAL-A-MONTH

LIVING GOD’S WORD We don’t always “come toward the light” (John 3:20). Sometimes we prefer the darkness. We might fear being condemned if our deeds are brought to light or we may simply be unable to find our way in the dark. We need the light of Christ to help us believe once more in God’s merciful love. Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Will you donate a meal this month to a family in need? Choose any of the needed items from the list or substitute as you prefer. Monetary donations always welcome!
