DYNAMIC CATHOLIC, ALIVE! – What is Prayer? Prayer is, first and foremost, a heartfelt conversation and living relationship with God. “Whether we realize it or not, prayer is the encounter of God’s thirst with ours. God thirsts that we may thirst for Him” (CCC, 256). Prayer is the first essential element of a serious spiritual formation process. “There is no substitute for a daily commitment to prayer” (Archbishop Carlson). How does your prayer life stand right now? archstl.org/dynamic

TEAM FOOD PANTRY St. Ferdinand has an ongoing collection for non-perishable food items and other personal care items. The need never diminishes—only grows. You do not need to bring an entire meal. Every little bit helps.

Someone has placed a challenge to all parishioners … Try to bring at least ONE item every week!

Can you imagine how much we can collect for T.E.A.M.? The majority of us wouldn’t feel the impact of one item a week but those in need would greatly benefit. Think about it!

SHOULD MY CHILD STAY HOME FROM SCHOOL?? It’s a tough call for any parent to make – and one that many of us will face now that kids are back to school after the holiday break. Your child wakes up in the morning complaining that she doesn’t feel well and wants to stay home. What should you do? Among the most common reasons for missing school are the fever, cough, and runny nose associated with the flu. School-aged children have the highest rate of flu illness, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that the flu has now reached epidemic levels in this country. According to a new Gallup poll, an average 4 percent of Americans reported having the flu last month – higher than all previous Decembers since 2008. If your child gets the flu, the CDC advises keeping them home from school for at least 24 hours after any fever is gone. Of course, the best way to protect your child – and others – against getting the flu is to have them vaccinated. The CDC reported last month that more than half of this season’s flu cases have been caused by the H3N2 virus, which is not well-matched to this year’s vaccine. Still, health officials recommend that everyone 6 months and older get the vaccine, which protects against other flu strains. If your child has a fever greater than 100 to 101, it’s a good idea for them to stay at home. Certainly symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea, and, finally, if it’s clear they’re in the contagious phase of their illness, they need to stay at home. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, questions to ask when determining whether a child should be in school include: Will my child’s symptoms prevent her from participating comfortably in activities?  Will my child require more care than the school staff can offer without compromising the health and safety of other students?  Could my child’s condition spread to other kids at school?  Most of the time, the decision whether to keep a child out of school is based on observation and common sense. If you’re still uncertain or are concerned about your child’s symptoms, contact their pediatrician.

LIVING GOD’S WORD There is one problem with Christian discipleship. No one will ever become a master. The most we can strive for is to be journeymen, like Jonah and Jesus’ disciples. We can only show others the way if we commit ourselves to the journey and walk at the Master’s side, trusting and listening and following the ways of the Lord. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’” – John 1:38 What are you looking for? Are you wasting your time looking for the material comforts of the world? Or, is your heart longing for something deeper that can only be found by spending time with God? Take time, each day, in silence and ask the Lord what it is that He wants you to do.
