ARE YOU WELL?...IF NOT, DO YOU WANT TO GET WELL? (John 5:1-15) My mind was always boggled by the seemingly bombastic word: “Wellness” Over the past decade we heard about “employee wellness”, “emotional intelligence”, etc. I have been interested by what Eric Berne, a pscychologist of the 1950’s argued that “total person wellness depends” on what he calls the 4 dimensions of the being, namely: Emotional, Mental, Social and Spiritual. The state of wellness he refers to as “health”. In line with this, he comes up with these four dimensions: a) Emotional Health b) Mental Health c) Social Health d) Spritual Health
Pastoral Staff Rev. Williams (072 212 4418) Deac.Speelman (084 787 0693) Evan. Baartman (071 157 9088)
He calls the process psychosocial health. First, before I outline what the different dimensions entail, the word “disease” actually comes from two words: “dis” + “ease” = dis-ease. So, an unwellnes means a “dis-ease” in one of the dimensions mentioned. Emotional Health This dimension has to do with the person’s state of awareness about his/her own feelings. The degree to which the person is able to be conscious of and express such feelings determines the level of emotional health. Social Health This dimension refers to the degree to which the person is able to interact socially with other persons. The issue of belonging and having a sense of belonging impacts on the person’s relationships with other persons. Mental Health This dimension refers to the degree of reason about life in general and where the person fits in the cosmic (creation) order of things. People with a low level of mental health are usually susceptible to suicide, because they get to a stage where they do not see the purpose of life in their lives. Spiritual Health This dimension refers to the degree to which the person feels connected with a Supernatural being. The inner person, the soul, is very active in this dimension and has an impact on the other dimensions’ state of healthiness. Therefore, “wellness” in this instance mean a balance of all, with an absence of dis-ease. As you ponder on your journey with Christ and those around you, have you ever paused and asked yourself which dimension in you needs healing? I hasten to say: “Jesus Christ can heal that!!!” Be Blessed, my friend. God sees you!!! Your friend and pastor, Louis
