34th Qld State Square Dance Convention 2014 What a great weekend of Square dancing. If you missed it, don’t miss the next one. We opened up the hall at 1pm on the Friday afternoon to be confronted by a lake in the middle of the dance floor, courtesy of the previous night’s storm. A determined group of dancers dealt with that, while others got stuck into decorations, kitchen, sound equipment, etc. etc. It all came together in time for the local Mayor Karen Williams to officially open the Event. 2 Halls dancing Friday Night and all day Saturday. Saturday morning was for those who wanted to find out what happens “Behind the Mike”. All things Caller related, ie. Music, Choreography, Teaching, Copyright and a little calling. All Dancers came together in 1 Hall for Saturday night and all day Sunday. Sunday morning was the usual Convention AGM. No surprises there. Next years Convention to be hosted in Caboolture by E.Z. Squares. It was fabulous to have 3 interstate Callers registered for the weekend. Father & Daughter - Graham & Charmaine Jameson from Golden Squares in Victoria. Graham Elliott from Adelaide Outlaws in South Australia along with his wife Dawn. Along with our fine Queensland Callers, presented a fun & varied programme of Square dancing from Basic to A2 with Contras and some easy line dances along the way. Bev McLachlan & Phyllis Stewart delivered just the right level of Round Dancing for the whole weekend. There were 133 pre-registered dancers for the Convention, with another 11 sold on the Friday night. Over the weekend, an extra 133 session tickets were sold. The raffles were very well patronised, plenty of good prizes won and quite a bit of money raised. The canteen was manned by Alzheimer’s Australia for the weekend; they have raised funds for a very good cause. Suppers on Friday and Saturday night were awesome, more food than the huge crowd could eat. Overall; Sound for the Convention was great. There are always minor hiccups but they were handled well by the appropriate people quickly. E.Z. Squares Dancers were in attendance selling “Early bird” weekend registrations for the 35th State Convention next year. 25th to 27th September 2015 in Caboolture. So far; there are 56 dancers and 8 Callers registered, check this website for more information: http://35thqldstatesdconvention2015.weebly.com The final event of the Convention was the After Party function. For those who have not heard Elaine Davis sing; you really missed out. There was plenty of food: Subway platters, Chicken & Salad, Fruit platters and some biscuits and cakes. The music had everybody dancing; there was definitely something for every taste. Rock ‘n’ Roll, Line dances, Gypsy Tap, Pride of Erin, Waltzes and even just get on the floor and “shake what you’ve got” type music. I’m not going to thank individual people, the list is too long and I will forget someone, but, to all the Callers/Cuers and Dancers in attendance….. Thank you for making the 34th Queensland State Square Dance Convention the absolutely outstanding success that it was. No one person is responsible for this type of event, it is a combined cooperative effort all working “TOGETHER IN HARMONY” Gary Petersen QCA President and Glenn Wilson QCA Vice President PLEASE SUBMIT ALL CONTRIBUTIONS BY 25th OF EACH MONTH.

ULYSSES SQUARES HOSTS 18 SQUARE DANCERS "Ulysses Squares in Edmonton, Cairns, recently hosted 11 members of Beehive Squares, Lower Hult, Wellington, N.Z. plus 7 aussies from 'down south'. Our members had the privilege of dancing to Callers Kathie Rogers (Beehive Squares, NZ) and our own Brian Hotchkies (NSW), new Caller Ivan Cooke (SA) and Round Dance Cuer Carol Simondson (VIC). We all had a wonderful night of dancing, and socialising, with our members in awe of actually meeting Brian Hotchkies in the flesh.......what a surprise when he and 6 other aussies turned up with the New Zealanders! The group were staying at the Cairns Coconut Resort where one of our dancers, Bill McLean, resides and he and girlfriend, Dianne Prior, were invited to dinner at the Resort on the Thursday night." Our members had a couple of lovely nights of dancing with Jackie Foulds & Trevor Sparkes from Matamoras Squares, Springvale North who were touring around the Cairns area. Secretary, Cheryl, is heading south for 4 weeks to visit family and actually have a holiday. Our next inter-Club night will be coming up shortly for Melbourne Cup.

CANE COUNTRY SQUARES On 5th September, we danced the night away to the "Magic of Music" when Matthew played some "golden oldies" we haven't heard for a long time as well as some modern music. Members could dress to suit a song title. Sadie was there to wave her feather duster, Calendar Girl made sure we knew the date, and The Black &White Minstrels kept the beat of the music and there were many others. There were some interesting variations and interpretations of the titles. Matthew tested our knowledge of artists and bands with some trivia throughout the night with a chocolate reward for the correct answers. Our upcoming event will be guest caller Nev McLachlan in Bundaberg on 25/26th October with Bev cueing rounds Saturday night and again a workshop on Sunday. All dancing will be at the Rum City Band Hall, Targo St (opp Dan Murphy). All members are welcome to attend. Times are as follows:Saturday 2.00-4.30pm 7.00pm 7.30pm Sunday 9.30-11.30am 1.00pm

Farewell Leighton & Sandra It was a sad, but enjoyable evening on Thursday, 4 September when Alan Evans called a mixture of mainstream, plus and A1/A2 to a group of Brisbane square dancers who joined together to wish Leighton and Sandra Bloomfield “goodbye and good luck”. The dance was held at the Logan Square Dance Centre. Sandra and Leighton have moved to Victoria to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They will be building a house in Beveridge, which is approximately 42 km north of Melbourne. Leighton held the position of President of the Queensland Square Dancing Society Inc for many years and both he and Sandra have held many positions on the committee of the Society as well as co-convening the 2008 National Square Dance Convention held at Chandler in Brisbane. Leighton also co-convened, with David Smythe, the 2003 National Square Dance Convention held at Caloundra. Leighton is presently the President of the National Square Dance Society of Australia. Their contribution to square dancing in Queensland has been varied and considerable and they will be greatly missed. Carole Mackinney

Cairns City Square Dance Club Last week was a great week for Cairns Square Dancers. When several members attended Ulysses Dance on Tuesday night they were aware the invitation was extended because square dancers from Wellington New Zealand were visiting. However both club members were surprised by the arrival of Brian Hotchkies, Lorraine Harvey and 5 dancers from Victoria and South Australia. A wonderful night of dancing followed mostly to Brian’s calling. Subsequently Brian and all the visitors were invited to our Club’s Friday night dance which most of them accepted. Another special night then followed. Many thanks to Brian, Lorraine and all visitors for this great night. Our club hopes they enjoyed their weeklong stay in Cairns. Members have had to come back to earth for our next Friday night’s dance. Yvonne has returned from visiting family in Townsville and watching her talented granddaughter perform in the Eisteddfod Until next month Janet Hansen - Publicity Officer PLEASE SUBMIT ALL CONTRIBUTIONS BY 25th OF EACH MONTH.

Hervey Bay Square Dancers. Hi everyone from the bay. We all had a wonderful night at Glenn Wilson's Fantasy Night. Some were dressed in their fantasy costumes - Glenn's fantasy was a pirate and yours truly was a ballerina. Margaret and Elaine joined Glenn on stage with some duets. It was just great to have callers in our midst. Thanks to Heritage City Hoedowners for coming down to the bay and also Elaine and Rob and Jules from EZ Squares and Margaret Baines. Your presence made a good night for us even better. By the time this goes to press, the Qld State Convention will be done and dusted. Four of us are travelling to Cleveland so we hope to see distant friends once more. Glenn Wilson is a popular caller. We will be dancing with him in Maryborough on 11th October, and then on Sunday 12th October our club is holding a social (fun and games) from 6pm till 9.30 pm. Visitors welcome. Alan Evans is calling in Hervey Bay on 8th November. Theme is "Back to the 50's Rock & Roll". Our club is really looking forward to hosting Alan so, if any dancers would like to join us, please feel free. We would love to welcome you too. Plus at 2pm and Mainstream at 7pm. Our web sight has more info. Cheers, Glenda. Hervey Bay Square Dance Club Inc PO Box 5383 Torquay Qld 4655 [email protected] www.squaredancingherveybay.com.au

RAMBLING EIGHTS - CALLER: DAVID PEARCE Some of our dancers absolutely love theme nights and with the warmer weather approaching we try to plan them to be appropriate. September saw us having a jungle night, and while no-one wore a skimpy Tarzan or Jane outfit we had a variety of animals, natives and hunters. Congrats to Margaretta and John who were judged best for their colourful native costumes complete with wigs and weapons. Our next theme night is 31st October and what could be more apt than “Happy Halloween”. All saints and sinners are welcome, bring your pet spiders, black cats or finger food for supper in theme. No, I don’t mean real fingers! We are currently trialling a different approach to door and supper roster. Club members are asked to put their name against a date or dates which they are prepared to arrive early to man the door, two maximum per week, and those who are not on the door roster are asked to volunteer to help with the supper set up and clean up. Remember dancing comes first, so fill the sets, whether on the door or in the kitchen, it will still get done after the bracket ends. Our club outing is set for Saturday 29th November, a presentation of “Calamity Jane” by the Beenleigh Theatre Players. Thanks to Hazel who organized this. Regular dancers are able to bring friends as long as space permits, at normal price. Dinner is also available at for those who wish at own cost. We also thank all those who helped at the QCA State Convention. David, Faith, Liz, Christine, Kevin, Jen, Jim, Trevor and Sue. Big events don’t just happen, they take a lot of planning, and volunteers. The dance sessions ran smoothly with a great experience for all club members who attended. The weekend ended on a high note with entertainment and a friendly social atmosphere, congratulations to the organisers.

REVIEW CLOSING DATES The last review for the year is the November/December issue going to print shortly. Could all submissions be sent by 10th October to allow time for me to be sure they are included. I know it is almost a month later that everyone gets to see what is in print, so planning is important. The first edition for 2015 will be January/February issue distributed early February. Closing date for inclusions will be 10th January. Please be aware that subscriptions will increase next year to $2.00 per issue, plus prepaid postage. In the September issue on page 24 there is a postal subscription form which covers 15 subscriptions, packaging and postage straight to your door, which is worth considering. This will lock in your price for the 18 month period, so check it out, but don’t leave it too long. SUNCOASTERS SQUARE DANCE CLUB On 30 August, Suncoasters had an Australiana Theme Night which was a lot of fun. During August the club has held a PLUS BOOTCAMP on three Sundays and one Saturday and we have been happy to see two squares of dancers keen to learn Plus and we trust some of these will eventually be joining our Plus night every Monday. Members of other clubs have been welcomed and will be very welcome when we do this in the future. We had a good night of dancing on 20 September even though it was an extremely wet night which kept some dancers at home.

The Co-Convenors of the 33rd Qld State Square Dance Convention would like to congratulate the Committee for the 34th Qld State Convention. Thank-you for a great weekend of dancing, fun and fellowship. Lynette & Grahame Macpherson Sid & Betty Leighton PLEASE SUBMIT ALL CONTRIBUTIONS BY 25th OF EACH MONTH.

STEPPING OUT WITH CLOGGING Firstly, thanks for all the kind words and actions shown to yours truly when the dreaded URTI knocked my dancing feet from under me for over a week. Stephen was assisted at Chugs by Amanda and Maureen with cueing, and at Double Jingle, Dian had help from Maureen, Bevan and Cathy. Amanda is now off on an overseas holiday with husband Richard, and Dad Michael and Mum Sally: ALL CLOGGERS, and the youngsters of the family, Aaron and Adrian. We wish them a safe and happy journey, and look forward to their return. And a wind-up on this year’s AUSSIE CLOG: So many compliments from those who attended the weekend Clogging Camp at Kindilan. Visitors from every State and Territory; excellent cueing; lots of fun & games which are a part of every Aussie Clog; smiling, willing helpers aplenty; and a firm “We’ll be back!” as our beautiful dancers reluctantly packed up and headed home. THANK YOU one and all for showing the true spirit of Clogging. One of our visitors to Aussie Clog was Carol from Darwin. This was Carol’s first experience at Aussie Clog and did a great job cueing several dances. Carol’s Club, previously known as NULINE, has now taken on the name CLOGGING CROCODILES; how appropriate for NT! The 50PLUS Activities Centre, located on the lower ground floor of the Brisbane City Hall, (come in via Adelaide Street entrance), is still going strong with it’s Clogging class every Monday morning. Olive, Dian and myself have been looking after the cueing by weekly rotation. Enjoying a Clogger’s dream, Nathan, having taken an extended absence of leave from work, has danced at Clogging venues across the United States of America, and then moved on to Europe and Great Britain. Bronte from Gympie, another rising star in Australian Clogging, is off on a Clogging holiday in the U S of A, dancing with the best of them. WELL DONE! Nathan and Bronte. Soon our thoughts will be turning to Club Christmas (break-up) Parties as the weather takes on a warmer touch. Enjoy the rest of the year dancing and socializing, Cheers, Frances FRANCES LOOK O.A.M. PINE RIVERS SENIOR CITIZENS By the time this bugle is read we will have had our State Convention. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves. Don't forget to make a date claimer for next year's. We seem to have had more than our fair share of health issues this year. We wish Carol and Gary speedy recoveries from their surgeries. Monica has been unable to dance for quite a number of weeks now, but turns up to enjoy the social side of things. Gloria and Doreen are also regular members of long standing, but are quite limited in their dancing these days. It is still great to see them come along and join in when they can. Our "Grande Finale" dance will be on Saturday 29th November in our hall at Kallangur (see flyer attached for details) This will be the end of an era for Square Dancing in Queensland. These dances have been run for 15 years now, so please come along and help us celebrate what has been achieved, and commiserate its loss. Happy dancing.
