‘Shindig on the Mountain’ 25th to 27th Oct 2013 They came from far and wide again to be part of my 5th ‘Shindig’ on the Mountain! Total numbers were a bit higher than last year peaking near 70 on Saturday Night. We danced a steady 6 Squares Friday Night and peaked with 7 squares on a few occasions. A steady 3 Squares thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Back to Basics’ Saturday morning. 5 Squares had a blast at the ‘Plus’ Session. Steady 6 Squares danced on Saturday Night and peaked at 8 squares! Sunday started with 4 squares and peaked at 6. Friday Night the dancers were treated to a visit by ‘Celtic Blunder’ in the last bracket who Called to the 'Belfast Polka', 'My Bonnie Lassie' and 'Amazing Grace'. Saturday night the dancers had to Ring their Bell and in the last bracket contend with a wannabe Indian Calling to 'Wig Wam Bam', 'Kawliga' and the song about Sitting Bulls illegitimate son 'Little Willy'. Sunday morning session finished with a CLASSIC Tribute > 'My Way' and 'Sweet Caroline'. Once again everything ran like clockwork! Thanks to my helpers that chip in, manning the Door, filling the Ern, Water Barrel and Bikkie containers! Raffologist Betty-Ann great job!. My formula for the ‘Shindig’ is quite simple and 5 years on is still working extremely well!! Once again this year was a Full Weekend of what I hoped it would be, great dancing, Fun and Friendship. Everyone loved the simplistic approach and seemed to absolutely love what I had prepared for them, Choreographically, Musically and all the Surprises. {As usual I had some New Calls that went over well!!} Mothar Mountain Hall was buzzing again and the atmosphere was Fantastic all weekend. Callers who helped out over the weekend were Elaine Davis, Dawn Keenan, Glenn Wilson and Margaret Baines. From the bottom of my heart I’d like to thank everyone who attended the 2013 ‘Shindig’ and invite you to keep in mind that the 24th , 25th and 26th October 2014 are the dates for the next ‘Shindig' on the Mountain! Gary Petersen. {The Rebel with a Cause}

TAIGUM TWIRLERS On Easter Saturday we had a change of venue for our night of dancing, but that did not lessen the atmosphere for a great night. We moved to Lynette MacPherson’s Club hall at Clontarf. The evening started at 5.00pm with a couple of entrees, then two types of soup. Mains were many and varied as was the dessert that followed. We are certainly blessed with some great cooks in this club. After cleaning the tables and packing them away we were then able to dance the night away. More dancers arrived after the meal was over and swelled our ranks to just over six sets. Great fun was had trying to see which table could get the most words out of “chocolate rabbit”. I think the record stands at around 305 words. The night finished with a good night grand and a light supper. Everybody had a great night. Thankyou to Lynette and Sid and everyone who helped in any way to make the night a great success.

GUMDALE GRANDSLIDERS – CALLER ALAN EVANS On the 9th April, Gumdale Grandsliders celebrated our 27th birthday. We had a good turn-out with five squares. Plus there was a lot of happy socialising with friends we don’t see on a regular basis. The theme was “International” and the hall looked very exotic with items from all over the world. A great opportunity to display those tea-towels, that are too beautiful to use to dry dishes. Guest callers, Peter Storey and Gene Medford, added to the fun of the night and our local mayor, Karen Williams, shared her talents as a singer and yodeller. She also very generously donated six of her CD’s to be sold for club funds. On the day before our birthday, our Alan had to be elsewhere, and we were lucky to have his old mate, David Smythe, call for us. His calling was much enjoyed. Don’t forget Alan’s 40 Years of Calling Dance on July 16th at Alexandra Hills Community Hall. Happy Dancing to all, from The Grandsliders. Fay Moore.

Bribie Island Squares: - Caller Gary Petersen Tuesdays at the Golden Age are going well in 2014 but numbers are lower due to the exception value in Cruise Holidays being taken up by dancers. Luckily they to seem to go in rotation and not all at once. Our beginners are getting there slowly and are nearing the end of Mainstream. We will not be having a new class in 2014 so Gary can consolidate everyone’s Mainstream. Bribie Island Squares; Caller Gary Petersen {Thursdays} Thursdays at the RSL have been suffering similar lower numbers due to the Cruising and also bad health. From May to September we will be dancing at the Solander Lakes Bowls Club on Thursday mornings as our regular venue the RSL is undergoing a major facelift. Times will remain the same from 9-00am to 11-45am. Please have all Bugle Advertisements in prior to 25th of each Month Thank You.

EZ SQUARES CABOOLTURE Quite a bit of activity has been happening at ez squares since the last edition. Firstly our Mini Olympics Day was held on Sunday the 30th March. What a lot of fun it was competing in a range of fun activities some looked really easy but when one’s turn came it was a different matter. There were 5 teams consisting of 5 members and the winning team was presented with a medal and a chocolate. The individual winner also received a medal and a chocolate while the booby prize winner received a chocolate. Our next function was “Snakes Alive” on 11th and 12th April. Friday evening began with half hour of round dancing called by Phyllis Stewart, then the evening of mainstream was called by David Cox from Port Macquarie. Saturday began with a morning session of mainstream with a difference and David put dancers through some unusual moves that really had them thinking. The afternoon saw plus dancing for 2 hours followed by 2 hours of basic/beginners. It was great to see beginners from other clubs as well as our own as the experience they gained will benefit them in their learning process. Saturday night saw the hall decorated ready for the “Roaring Twenties” theme with gangsters, flappers, guns, cars, musicians, musical notes, and lettering and balloons, all keeping with the black and white theme. Before long they started to arrive, the gangsters and flappers with their cigarette holders and ladies in more conservative dress and men with braces and hats, some carrying violin cases. Phyllis started the evening with round dancing then David carried on with mainstream, calling to lots of tunes from that era. During the night the raffle was drawn and lots of dancers went home carrying prizes. The night concluded with a wonderful supper prepared by some of the members and committee. An event like this cannot take place without the help of many people, so a big thank you to anyone who helped in any way big or small.

HERVEY BAY Hi everyone from lovely Hervey Bay. Rain at last – it makes all the difference to see green grass again and flowers and vegies looking at you saying ‘thanks’. No amount of watering makes up for a shower from above. We are all in recovery mode from our absolutely fantastic 25th Anniversary weekend. Someone asked somewhere along the line if another tape club had been running for more than 21 years. Well, Hervey Bay is one of those. Since 1989 all our dancing and teaching in both PLUS and Mainstream is done with the use of original tapes. In recent years they have been converted to MP3s to use on our Laptop. CDs from top callers are regularly added to our extensive library to give us variety, challenges and fun dancing. By the way, don’t feel sorry for us because we are ‘only a tape club’ we actually like it this way. Many of us had a great time on our Sunday Social night, with soup & sweets, followed by a restful night (all except our mouths of course) playing Rummy kin and Cards. We are lucky with our hall; it’s reasonable and great for any occasion. At least six of us have packed up and gone off to Canberra for the National Convention. What will we be wearing on Sunday’s dress up night? Surprises for those who will be there. We’ll take photos for the ones missing out. (If you are in the Hervey Bay area, please come and bump up the numbers while they are freezing in Canberra.) May 24th is the date set aside for our Disco Queen; fabulous Kay Walker. As usual there’s PLUS 2-4.30pm and dig out your flashy outfits for a night to music from the ‘Energising 80s’ starting at 7pm. If you are in the area you are cordially invited to come along to both sessions and help us enjoy a great night with Kay. Till then, Happy Dancing from Hervey Bay. Cairns City Square Dance Club The Club’s Friday nights dancing has been disrupted due to public holidays and the arrival of Cyclone ”ITA”. Fortunately for Cairns and district besides all the wind and rain the cyclone brought very little damage. Hopefully next month we can continue our dancing. Numbers have been down prior to this with members away or sick. Members have been saddened to learn of the deteriorating health of Warren who has had to cease dancing. Warren was a very active member of the club prior to this and he is greatly missed. Until next month Janet Hansen - Publicity Officer

CANE COUNTRY SQUARES It is around to May again when Cane Country Squares Annual "Dance for Heart" will be held 16th May with everyone wearing something red on the night. Proceeds on the night from admission, continuous cent sale draws and donations are presented to Heart Support, Bundaberg to help with rehabilitation of patients following heart problems. The tables are usually very full with members contributions. Representatives from Heart Support join in the activities as well. Our learners in various groups are enjoying their dancing and contributed to a raffle for a $40.00 Woolworths voucher won by Shirley - she must have been feeling lucky that night and teased everyone she was going to win it.

PINE RIVERS SENIOR CITIZENS We have held our first Saturday afternoon dance and were pleased with the outcome. We have done a couple of things differently to our previous evening dances but everything went well except, for the air conditioning. Sorry about that but it was out of our control. Our next Saturday afternoon dance is on 31st May and is themed “M” for May. If you wish, come along as something starting with the letter “M”. Margaret says she just has to come along, and she will be in character. For further information, please refer to our attached flyer. Our learners are coming along nicely and our “basic” dancers are thoroughly enjoying transitioning into the full mainstream movements. We look forward to seeing you on the 31st May but don’t forget the Gala Dance and Sunshine State Roundup on 24th May. Happy dancing Jan

SUNCOASTERS "There was a meeting of the Management Group for the 57th National Convention to be held at Buderim in 2016. After the meeting, Michael and Matthew Mills stayed on for our Saturday night dance and joined with Nev. in calling, which was a lot of fun. Nev hired a minibus and drove several of our dancers, plus Bev drove a carload of dancers, to Salisbury, Brisbane for the Society's AGM dance on 29th March. That was another good night of dancing. Also, a few of our dancers had very much enjoyed a terrific weekend of dancing in Maryborough to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Maryborough and Hervey Bay clubs. Everyone greatly enjoyed Brian Hotchkies' calling for the weekend along with Gary Petersen's calling. We are now looking forward to the National Convention in Canberra as I am sure dancers from all over Australia are." Pam Edwards

RAMBLING EIGHTS SALISBURY Caller David Pearce The start of the new year is always busy for our dancers, with social BBQ in January, Club Birthday in February and this year we did something different in March when our club hosted the Society AGM Dance. The actual details were all overseen by our caller, David, with great success. We have received many favourable comments from other club’s members and encouragement to write how we accomplished some of the details. Planning started as soon as David knew our club was involved. Firstly, the decorations. David contacted Wavell Whirlaways and got templates of dancers, which were then used to make different coloured cardboard cutouts. Some of our dancers took them home to be decorated further by themselves, their children or grandchildren, and other different decorations and cut-outs were added to the growing collection. Then the raffle. Dancers were asked to contribute towards the prizes and towards the end of the year started gathering together contributions towards hampers. Donations started coming in, such as baskets of all sizes, sheets of cellophane and ribbons as well as bottles of wine, food items, toiletries, books, and many diverse items which were distributed to make up mixed prizes. There were also some larger donations of a coffee machine and deep fryer to choose from, thanks to a generous donor. Supper was co-ordinated with a list of dancer names to ensure a good mix of hot food, sandwiches, savouries, cakes and fruit. Cold drinks were organised, as well as tea and coffee, and after all was over the cleaning up! The main reason was of course to dance, and thankfully David took care of all details relating to callers, cuers and programme, and then at the last minute he ended up with a health challenge that meant everyone had to pull their weight and try to take all pressure off him. An outstanding effort from all produced a good result for the evening. A very big Thank you to all involved, but especially to David and Faith. WAVELL WHIRLAWAYS On the Wednesday night before Anzac day we have started a new tradition. Sid has asked us to bring along our parents medals or even our own medals from military service. This is our third year and we seem to be getting more people bringing along medals and many other goodies from the wars. Identity cards and tags, bullet shells, pins from hand grenades and things made by soldiers in their down time. Really look forward to this night and hearing what our dancers themselves went through in service of their country or what they remember their parents telling them of their time in the Navy, Army, or Air Force. Get well Betty.

STEPPING OUT WITH CLOGGING Looks like a huge weekend for Darwin in late June, as not only will the ACA 19th National Clogging Convention be on in all it’s excitement and glory, but the SKYCITY V8 Supercar Championships series will also be held on the same weekend. Yes, we did check, and originally the Supercars were to be on the weekend BEFORE our Convention. When we were advised of the change of date by Supercars it was too late for the Clogging Convention to go to another date as all bookings (venue, accommodation, and a lot of flight bookings) had been made. No worries…… we will have a great time, and who knows, maybe get to do a lap or two around the track at Hidden Valley. With Chug-a-Lug Cloggers celebrating their 27th Birthday on the 17th May, we are hoping that a line-up of Leaders & Cuers from other Clubs will pick up the mike and give us the benefit of their talent. Let me know before hand what you would like to cue on the day. Indications are it will be a super day with dancers coming from all over to help CHUGS celebrate. Oh! and don’t forget, Cloggers who may for one reason or another be having a break from Clogging, are very welcome to come along if only to socialize: we would love to see you. Spectators (free admission) are welcome. Tea, coffee, and lunch provided (samples of your cooking expertise will help make our day). Address: Coorparoo School of Arts Hall, Cavendish Road, corner of Halstead Street. Time: 9:30 am to 4 pm. Lots of street parking close by. Edith Sandy was very pleased to let us know that Moonshine Cloggers in Gympie have some new Beginners in their ranks. Our best wishes to Lyn Hynd (Double Jingle) who is sidelined due to a health problem. Lyn and Bob hope to be back at Lutwyche with all of their Thursday morning friends in the not too distant future. Thanks for all the fun times: past, present, and with lots more to come. FRANCES PH: 07 3391 6526; MOBILE 0429 851 891 EMAIL: [email protected] WEBSITE: www.cloggingaustralia.com
