Beaufort Squadron takes the Plunge Beaufort Sail & Power Squadron participated in the 7th annual Pelican Plunge on New Year's Day near the lighthouse on Hunting Island State Park’s North Beach and promoted safe boating courses in style! The Plunge was a exhilarating way to start the year off. Thank you to all that came out to support our team. Some were there to cheer us on and others took the plunge. Our team leader Bonnie Wright was in full costume and did a great job raising pledges. Beaufort Sail & Power Squadron raised well over $300.00 in pledges. The money raised will go toward educational programs on Hunting Island.

Commander’s Report Diana Jordan, AP Greetings, I am very pleased to be your Commander! I am also very fortunate to have a great supporting team to work side by side with. We are very excited to make this a memorable year for the squadron! With The Christmas Holidays ending we moved right into the planning for this year's activities. We had a very productive meeting and have a very ambitious cruise schedule this year, with rain dates as a contingency plan in the case of bad weather or rough seas. This year's cruise schedule includes luncheon cruises, raft-ups, poker run, Blue Angels Air show, Water Festival concert, destination cruises and a D26 Cruise and Rendezvous weekend event. There is definitely something for everyone! It should be a very exciting cruise year. Remember you don't need a boat to participate, just sign up to crew with someone. We are in need of seasoned boaters to serve as Cruise Captains for this year’s cruises. Please call Anne Jennings, Bonnie Wright or P/C Doug Nelson to volunteer. The Educational committee has just completed the Seamanship course. The Navigation course is currently underway with students from our squadron as well as students from the Hilton Head Squadron and Tybee Light Squadron. A Weather class will begin shortly. ABC classes will start on March 14th and run for three Saturdays. Let your family friends and neighbors know about this upcoming class. Seminars were ordered and have come in. These seminars are of a variety of boating related topics and they are being offered free to squadron members and will be offered to the public for a fee. Our Administrative Officer has been working hard to schedule our dinner venue with interesting speakers and topics. In January, P/C Roy Stevens gave a very informative talk on "On the Water". It spurred a lot interest within the squadron to take the class. February's meeting was at Royal Pines and our speaker spoke on eye safety on and around the water. It was a very eye opening talk and very interactive dialog between the squadron and the doctor. March's meeting is at the Squadron favorite venue that you don't want to miss. Come by land or come by sea, but just make sure you get to this all you can eat seafood buffet! It is our Pat Weiland Annual Ice Breaker Cruise to Port Royal Dockside Restaurant on March 7th. As a closing thought the success of this year's activities depend on all of us. So let's keep the wind to our backs and have a safe and educational year boating the waters of Beaufort. Diana.

3 Come for the Boating Education…Stay for the Friends℠

Executive Officer’s Report Lt/C Wally Wallace,AP Since the position of executive officer is not a very visible one, I will offer some historical information about the beginnings of United States Power Squadrons® and its impact on how we are structured today. In the early 1900’s most of the power boats in the US were large and powered by steam. Recreational boating was pretty much limited to sail boating and certainly to folks who had considerable money and influence. Yacht clubs were the organizations for those folks and they were very popular in New England. A gentleman named Roger Upton was a member of the Boston Yacht Club and he owned a 50 foot ketch, but as the story goes, he was really fascinated with the new powerboats. He purchased a 35 foot motor launch to serve as a “tender” for the sailboat – just a little overkill. Soon his fascination with powerboats became a central focus of his activities and he formed a “power squadron” within the Boston Yacht Club. That club-within-a-club morphed into a separate organization which grew nationally and was later named United States Power Squadrons® . This organization attracted the attention of FDR and the US Navy at least partly because Upton knew FDR. The early squadrons were required to participate in “drills” which were designed as training exercises for the members and education in all things nautical. New members were required to participate in at least three squadron drills the first year to maintain their membership. Education within the squadrons continued to be paramount to the organization. This all grew into the system of educational “grades” that we use today to signify what courses a member has completed. Since they were birthed from the yacht club community, leaders took on titles & rank as was fashionable in the yacht clubs. Commander or sometimes Commodore was the rank for the squadron leader much as it is today. National leaders took on titles like Rear Commodore and Vice Commander. The original national Governing Board actually had a US Navy Rear Admiral as a member. So you see why we still today use ranks & military titles for our officers. The term “bridge officers” apparently arose from the naval qualifications of officers qualified to operate the ship “from the bridge.” More often today our younger generation knows that it refers to Star Trek officers that are never killed. The year 1919 was a pivotal year for USPS. The national treasury had no money and the organization was actually $450 in debt. Many changes occurred over the years since then, mostly to do with organization of districts and educational courses. One distinct change occurred in 1982 when women were first accepted as “active” members. Today the backbone of United States Power Squadrons® is the local squadron. There are some “cyber members” that do not belong to a squadron but they are very much in the minority at this time. While we are a fraternal organization, we maintain service to community & education for both the public and members as cornerstones of membership. USPS removed the requirement for boat safety education prior to membership in 2010 but many squadrons, including BSPS, still retain that as a requirement. Wally Go to www.usps.org/beaufort to view our squadron website. Under “About Us” select “Members Only” to view the roster, read the by-laws or go to SailAngle. Use password: safeboat to open protected files.

No Show Dinner Reservation Notice Those members who make a dinner reservation and then cannot attend must contact the Administrative Officer to CANCEL by the Wednesday BEFORE the meeting. Otherwise, you are expected to pay for the meal. Cookie at 379-1058 or send an email to [email protected] 3

Administrative Officer’s Report Lt/C Kathryn Stevens, JN The 2015 schedule is getting quite busy with the wonderful cruise schedule that a few of our Luncheon/ Dinner meetings will be part of, like Dockside which is coming up on March 7 th. Please remember to get your reservations in by February 28th. Two other favorite Cruise/Meetings are scheduled as well in the upcoming months which will be Dataw and Fripp Islands. Both are always a fun time and hopefully the weather will cooperate this year. The January Speaker was P/C Roy Stevens, JN who gave a presentation about the “On the Water” certification offered by USPS. The course outline was very interesting so let’s hope it can be given again this year for those who missed out the first time and expressed an interest. Our February Dinner Speaker was Dr. Jane Kokinakis who shared great information about keeping your eyes protected in, on and around the water. It is very important that we heed her suggestions; she has seen it all and none of us want to lose or damage our sight. That’s why we live here to see the beautiful scenery and enjoy it with our family and friends. The April meeting will be something new we haven’t tried before. We are going to the Rancho Grande on Lady’s Island in the GrayCo Shopping strip. Pedro has promised we will have a grand time. In May our speaker will be from our own Educational Department. They are excited to share some of the very useful informational seminars that are available to the members and the public. Please check them out – I have seen some of the outlines and they promise to be great. Several members are working toward updating our Roster and Calling System. If you have any questions or concerns about either of these, please let me know. It is our goal to make sure everyone who wishes to be notified by our wonderful Callers will be reachable (some telephone numbers are in question at this point) and that no one is missed. We want to make sure everyone is aware of all our activities. Please join us for our meetings, the cruises, the seminars and the great classes. Remember; Come for the Education and Stay for the Friends. Cookie

SICK BAY REPORT Please notify Cookie Stevens of anyone in our squadron who might need “a few kind words.” If you know of someone who is experiencing an illness, accident, loss of loved one or any other reason you believe a card should be sent, call Cookie at 379-1058 or send an email to [email protected]. A card will be sent on the squadron’s behalf in hopes it will bring a little comfort to our fellow member. Thank You and I Hope your Day is full of Sunshine as well

Secretary’s Report Lt/C Victoria J. Bowyer, S SUMMARY OF EXCOM MINUTES

SUMMARY OF EXCOM MINUTES

January 10, 2015

February 2, 2015

The Night (LUTN) since we had a successful turn out at this past December's event. A motion was maded and carried favorably to continue offering cash awards for LUTN. It was suggested a table or section be inserted on our database for members to add squadron statistics such as upcoming education classes, seminars, awards and upcoming cruises. It will help keep everything up to date and current as he noted there is missing historian reports from 2010 through 2013. Another suggestion was made that upon completion of a cruise or class, the cruise captain and class instructor should notify Joel, so he can add this to the 'table”. Lt Kate Canavan proposed to EXCOM that we consider approving a new member who is in the process of taking the ABC or approved education course, be given a trial membership in BSPS. P/C Steve Mendoza stated that this would not be allowed as it is not written in our Bylaws. Only if the person passes the course/test would they be offered membership. EXCOM stated Lt Canavan may invite those trial members to our meetings. P/C Kay Summers will stay on as log editor. A motion was made, seconded and carried to keep the log bimonthly as well as sending members electronic copies due to the expense of printing and mailing hard copies. Hard copies will still be sent to those members who do not use email. Bylaws: have been received by National and are currently under review. Discussion was held as to the adoption of a new budget or base this year’s budget on last year's expenditures. Since we have not had any problems in the past, a motion was made, seconded and carried to base our budget on last year’s figures. tThe Audit Committee is ready to begin their audit for last year. Lt/C Jones is assembling her records and verifying that everything is accounted for properly to present to the committee. A motion was made, seconded and carried to approve the purchase a 2nd computer projector. It was also decided that the Education Department will devise a sign out sheet or another means to keep track of the use and return of our computer equipment. CDR Jordan discussed if BSPS members should form a environmental committee to assist in keeping clean of local boat ramps etc. It was decided to discuss this at a later date, as this committee falls under who was not in attendance. Off shore drilling: there will be a meeting forthcoming at the Chambers Park held by community leaders to discuss the possible threat of off shore oil and gas drilling and wind energy. The meeting was adjourned at 1535.

Cdr. Jordan questioned EXCOM if any member had experienced the new Districts “go to meetings” as there is one this week that she will be “attending”. Lt/C Wallace stated he has started the process for this year’s sponsors for Light Up the Night (LUTN), as he has begun contacting the larger corporations for sponsorship. In regards to the environmental committee, he will contact other organizations concerning our assistance with helping keep the local boat ramps clean and how can we “market” our name by adding BSPS information on signs at the boat launch areas. The Class on Navigation is still in process and possibly late spring, we will be offering Advanced Piloting and Weather. Seminar instruction kits are here and are being reviewed. Lt/C Stevens attended the recent conference at Jacksonville and gave a short synopsis on the courses and events attended. Lt/C Kate Canavan stated National gave her 3 names of people who were given trial memberships and she will contact and invite them to our next week’s Squadron meeting Lt/C Louann Jones submitted her records to the auditor for his review. To date, she has not heard back from him with his findings. We have moved to a new storage facility located at “Low Country Storage” near the new Publix on Lady's Island. Our unit is G13. Joel Greene, Historian designed a new information form for Departments to list past and future educational courses, cruises and awards. This should help keep a tally of all information current for historical reporting. Vicki Swierkowski starting in March will be responsible for record keeping of merit marks. Please turn these in monthly. 1st Quarter Anchor Award: A recipient has been chosen and the award will be presented during March’s dinner meeting. There is a copy of the new member handbook on the website which needs updating as well as the “calendar of events”. Lt/C Canavan volunteered to do this update. The handbook should also be given to those new members who completed and passed the ABC class. A new calling list is being developed by the Stevens' and they will also be updating our Squadron Roster. Bi monthly information to members: Since our log is now bimonthly, there is some concern as to whether our members are missing out on squadron activities etc. Should an email summarizing this information, be sent out on the off months? DB2000 presentation was given by Lt/C Wallace on how to navigate the site. He is also updating our website in accordance with the new standards set by USPS. The meeting was adjourned at 1558.

7 Come for the Boating Education…Stay for the Friends℠

Educational Officer’s Report All Hands: This is kind of like taking a shower. Sometimes you just have to do it. I’m talking about getting recertified to teach boating courses at BSPS. There are eleven of us whose certifications have either run out or will by October of this year. We are planning a recertification class for February 28, 2015 to get everyone set for the next four years. If you plan to continue to teach for the Squadron you must attend this class. It will be held at the Port Royal Town Hall starting at 9:00am and running for about two (2) hours. This is the only class planned for this year so I hope you will be able to attend. The Class on Navigation is still in process and possibly late spring, we will be offering Advanced Piloting and Weather. Seminar instruction kits are here and are being reviewed to see which topics will be of interest in order to present these seminars to our members and eventually, the public. The Seamanship class is finishing up and ABC course for March has 18 people signed up. P/Lt/C John Satterfield will be conducting the Weather Course in March. If you are interested in taking this very informative course, please contact Lt/C Churnetski at 843-757or Satterfield at 843-838-6629 ([email protected]).
