4:30 pm – 5:30 pm Physiatry in Workers’ Comp: A Solution Whose Time Has Come Shilpa Kasuganti, MD, The Rehab Center, Charlotte, NC

The medical specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or physiatry, is a versatile discipline that is directly relevant to many of the

medical needs of Workers’ Comp patients, but has been largely overlooked. Physiatrists deal with orthopedic and musculoskeletal issues from a non-operative perspective, and typically have access to a range of non-invasive treatment modalities, often working in tandem with other disciplines. Most injured workers do not require surgery, and often the time spent conducting various tests to rule out the need for a surgical procedure can be used more efficiently. In addition to providing a comprehensive, conservative approach to sprains, strains and non-surgical injuries, some physiatrists obtain advanced training in brain injury, and can appropriately diagnose and treat concussions, without requiring access to a neurologist, an ever-more difficult pursuit. This presentation will provide an overview of the field of physiatry, and specifically its relevance to Workers’ Compensation cases, especially for early intervention.

5:30 pm – 6:30 pm Understanding Electronic Healthcare Records Mary Ellen Haile, Director of EHR, Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia, SC
