CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF KERALA Central University of Kerala, Kasaragod, came into being in 2009. The University is located in a region characterized by linguistic and ethnic diversity and cultural richness. University seeks to harness the local resources – human, intellectual, social, artistic and cultural – while bringing the best that is globally available, thus maintaining a fruitful, symbiotic relationship with a region that gravely needs an educational uplift. The academic excellence of the university has crossed all institutional barriers in the recent years and its name has reached to all states and even countries outside our continent.
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION School of Education was started in Central University of Kerala in the year 2015, which aims to promote a cadre of professionally qualified teacher educators to meet the needs and challenges of the Knowledge Society across the globe. The school promotes pedagogical research and endeavours to achieve excellence by facilitating quality teacher education. The University and the department of Education have honoured by MHRD with its prestigious PMMMNMTT project.
CENTRE FOR LIFE SKILL EDUCATION Life skill education is a comparatively new domain. There are comparatively meager intellectual discourses on such a vital concept. At this juncture the School of Education proposes to launch the Centre for Life Skills Education to undertake research, teaching and training programs in life skills education and to propagate the need and importance of life skills education in the country. As a prelude to its activities, a two day national seminar on life skills education is being organized at Central University of Kerala by inviting experts and other stake holders across the country to brainstorm on various strategies to integrate life skills concepts into general education in the country.
ABOUT THE SEMINAR Life skills are the psycho social abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life. Life skills education aims to reinforce existing knowledge, positive attitudes and values, prosocial and healthy skills and behaviour. It helps to prevent or reduce myths and misinformation, negative attitudes and risky behaviours. As a preventive tool life skills education enables adolescents to prevent violence, HIV/AIDS, early marriage and pregnancy, substance abuse, sexual abuse, vehicle injuries, domestic violence and negative peer pressure, reproductive sexual health, etc. Life skills are not a complete remedy for all deviant behavior, but it is proved as a very effective methodology in developing the capabilities and competencies of youngsters. The overall aim of this seminar is to unveil the proposed Centre across the country and to showcase the potentials of the Centre as a nodal Centre for life skill education.
OBJECTIVES To address the need of linking education and skill development with emphasis on the strategies for harnessing the potential of youth towards developing employable skills To emphasise the need for life skill education to address and bridge the disparities in education with respect to gender, locale and socio-economic aspects in schools and higher education arena To recapitulate the crucial role of HEIs in societal development by strengthening the linkage between educational institutions with the society enabling the stake holders competency development To analyse the strategies for developing aptitudes and capabilities of research among teachers and learners with due emphasis given to the building teaching-research nexus at schools and HE levels in the domain of life skill education for sustainable living CORE THEME Mainstreaming life skills education in general and higher education : challenges & prospects SUB THEMES Integrating life skill development for sustainable living Integrating life skill development in Higher Education. Bridging Gender and Social Gaps. Developing the Best Teachers by developing life skill competencies. Internationalisation of Higher Education for developing global competencies New Knowledge, Pedagogies and Approaches for transacting life skill competencies at all levels. Life skill competencies for migrants and marginal communities Life skills for adolescent and youth development PROGRAMMES Various activities proposed in two days are: Inaugural session Plenary sessions Brainstorming session on future activities of the Centre for Life Skills Education Symposium Technical sessions Valedictory session PARTICIPANTS Policy Makers, Academicians Administrators, Teacher educators, Faculties of various disciplines, Researchers, Teacher trainees and others who have special interest in life skills education. MODALITIES OF PARTICIPATION A participant who intends to register as a presenter will need to contribute a research paper, article, review or a theoretical/conceptual paper on any of the core areas under consideration for the seminar. After expert review selected papers will be presented in the seminar. Central University will publish Proceedings with all the selected papers of the seminar.
