Year 3 Animal Carnival

Issue8

2

by Ms. Jeni Wong

On Friday 7th October Year 3 ended their topic about endangered animals with an Animal Carnival to celebrate their learning and also raise some money for endangered animals. With the combined money raised we hope to adopt our chosen animals via the World Wildlife Fund and bring an awareness about endangered animals to others.

https://gifts.worldwildlife.org/giftcenter/gifts/Species-Adoptions.aspx It was a great morning with face painting, a treasure hunt style quiz made from the children's own report writing, photo booths with the featured animals, animal movies (that the children made in Computing) to watch, each child could sell their very own self-designed animal awareness sticker and food/drinks to sell.

A huge 'Thank You' to all the parents who volunteered their time to support our event by helping to man stores or help make resources. Many thanks to Mrs. Mrs Hall for making the children's videos into one long video for us to share. Our grand total made was about NT$51,910 as of today.

Global Development Goals by Mr. Craig Gamble During our KS2 Friday assembly Mr. Gamble introduced the children to the United Nations Global Development Goals with a particular focus on Goal No. 5, to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls as UNICEF celebrates World Day of the Girl on October the 11th.

The children were encouraged to take part in a gender equality survey and upload their results to the World’s Largest Lesson website (http://worldslargestlesson.globalgoals.org/F romWhereIStand/) to help generate a global image of gender equity. You can download the survey and instruction sheet here (I have shared the docs with you on Google drive

http://gg.gg/globaldevelopmentgoal(http://gg.gg/globaldevelopmentgoa suverys ). Mr. Gamble would really like to have your completed posters and survey sheets returned to him following the holiday so that he can create a display in school of the data that the children gathered.

Primary Assessment JAWS (Job Alike Workshop): Lift without Levels Report by Mr. Duncan Millward During Friday 30th September and Saturday 1st October, the British Primary Section hosted a FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia) Primary Assessment JAWS: Life Without Levels. Organised in response to the changes to the English National Curriculum and assessment reform from the government in the United Kingdom, the JAWS was a way for educators from around the region to share how their schools have tackled these changes in terms of assessment, and for BPS to use this information to move our programmes forwards. Thank you to Mr. Gamble and Mr. Groom for speaking at the event.

Child Safety during and after ECAs by Mr. Kerry Nockolds The ECA programme is in full swing now, with students enjoying their ECAs and learning lots of new skills at the same time as having fun. The ECA team would like to take this opportunity to just remind parents and students of a few important procedures to ensure the safety and security of the children during this after-school period. Child supervision: If your child has a late starting ECA or is waiting for a sibling to finish their ECA, they must be supervised by a parent or guardian. They must not be left unsupervised on campus. To assist parents with this, the ECA programme offers a “Supervised Homework Club” (Y2-6) for these children; we supervise them whilst they wait for the start of their ECA. Please contact the ES Assistant Secretary Ms. Caroline Chen [email protected] , ext.1850, to ask about details for this service.

Children are expected to do homework, read a book or work quietly during this time.

Areas available for student play: After school, there are certain areas which are not available for use, and so children should not be playing in these areas, as they are allocated for ECAs only and supervision from ECA staff is limited to the ECA children. Simply speaking, the Junior playground area in front of the Junior building is the only place that children waiting with parents should be playing. Collection of children before and after ECA Collection before ECAs: The ECA assistants will take attendance of all children in every ECA class, if for any reason your child is not going to be attending their ECA we need you to inform us so we can mark the attendance sheet clearly. If a parent picks up their child without informing us, we spend a great deal of time trying to search the campus to find them to make sure they are safe. Thank you all for informing the ECA office of any occasion when you pick your child up early and they will be absent from the ECA.

5

Collection after ECAs: When the ECA instructors bring the children to the collection points after class, please do not leave with your child without informing the teacher. For example, if an infant football ECA class is walking from the infant area to the Cafeteria for pick up, please don’t leave with your child if you see them walking past, make sure you pick them up at the cafeteria and let the teacher acknowledge you when you collect your child. As a quick reminder of pick up zones: Reception age: Glass Tube Infant Yr 1-2: 1

Cafeteria

Junior Yr 3-6: 3

Junior Atrium

All information about ECA procedures is available to parents in the ECA Chart viewable on the TES Website > Admission>Primary ECAs>ECA Charter Thank you for your support: We really appreciate your help following these safety and security procedures, without your help the job of the ECA assistants and ECA instructors is extremely difficult and concerns about children’s safety is obviously paramount to all our team.

ANY QUESTION ABOUT ECA, E PLEASE CONTACT: Ms. Caroline Ca Chen, ES Assistant Secretary Email: [email protected] Phone: 02-8145 02 9007 Ext.1850
