12 th May 2017 . OUR INTERNATIONALISM IS THE DRIVER OF OUR NATIONALISM – ALEX SALMOND
It’s a Wonderful World at TES by Mr. Peter Sloan It’s been a busy week at TES. Tuesday saw the three sections come together in assemblies to celebrate Europe Day. This occasion gives us the opportunity for us to celebrate the strength and positive possibilities that the diversity of our school brings. We followed Europe Day with an event that had an even wider international flavour! Our Food Festival is a hugely popular part of our International Languages and Culture Festival. This year we had an even more spectacular celebration than ever. We had a very impressive range of countries represented with our parents providing some delicious samples of food from around the world. The children had a fantastic time visiting the various tables and tasting the fantastic foods on offer. Many thanks to all our parents who contributed and to parents and staff who were involved in making this a super success.
‘Such Wonderful Music! – It’s Amazing!’ by Mr. Peter Sloan Last Friday marked the occasion of our annual Tri-Section Music Concert. The comment ‘It was amazing’ was only one of many that I received from parents who were delighted and amazed at the quality of the music from our orchestra, choirs and jazz band. This was the second year that I have attended a TriSection Music Concert and I was just as impressed with the quality of the performance and the high standard of the performers as I was the first time. Congratulations to all of our children who performed. Their commitment and enthusiasm are a credit to themselves, their families and the school. That there were nearly two hundred is a tribute to the strength of music in our school. I would like to thank our BPS music teachers, Ms. Kao and Ms. Lin, our Jazz Band conductor Mr. Stapleton, our Jazz Band singer Ms. Cristie, to our ECA music teachers and to those hard working staff, pupils, and volunteers behind the scenes who made sure the children were where they needed to be at the right time. We held two concerts on Friday and both were equally spectacular. Thank you to all those of you who were able to attend and
who added your own enthusiasm to a magical day of music. (For more photos please see page 2 & 3.)

International Learning from our Families by Mrs.s. Jennie Bonnalie To celebrate and make meaningful connections to International week at TES, we invited some of our Nursery families to come in and talk about their countries. We were fortunate to be able to learn about a

variety of countries different from our own. We also sang songs and listened to different languages specific to that place. We would like to thank ank the parents and grandparents for taking the time to share all of this with the Nursery children.

Year 6 have been learning how to conduct and participate in formal debates since the end of last term. This week the four classes were represented and faced off against each other. The motion was "This house believes that all students at BPS should be given give a minimum of one hour of homework per school night". 6CW and 6KM were proposition, while 6TM and 6DK were opposition. A random draw was carried out leading to a fierce debate between 6KM and 6DK. All the students did a remarkable job, however 6KM just ed edged in to win the debate. In our next debate 6CW took on 6TM in a brilliant showdown.
According to our adjudicators, Ms Rowe and Ms Leane, it was another very close call, but in the end 6TM tipped the balance just slightly in their favour. This coming Monday ay 6KM and 6TM will "debate" it out to see who are the winners for the year 6 debating contest. Well done to all our year 6 students, the quality of the debating in classrooms was simply outstanding!

The New Road Layout
Issue32
by Mr. Peter Sloan
Our new road layout has been in place for several weeks now and, following conversations with parents and observation by our staff, it is working well. Even so, there are, inevitably, some improvements that we want to make! We have had a couple of incidents, all happening in the afternoon, of Taipei City Government recovery vehicles towing cars away for illegal parking. Please remember that no parking is allowed on the red line. Please note that the yellow line denotes a drop off/pick up zone, allowing a three minute drop off during designated time slots (7:30am to 8:30am, 11:30am to 12:30pmand 2:30pm to 4:30pm). No parking is allowed on the yellow line outside the threee designated time slots. This is a city government decision, not the schools. If you are collecting from

school in the afternoon and are going to be longer than the three minutes, then the only way to be certain of avoiding a tow truck is to park elsewhere and walk into school. We hope that the Xiqu Car Park will be open for public use after the summer holiday. This will significantly increase parking availability. The road where the drop off is located is city government land. This means that we must work with them to bring about any changes in layout. We are working with them now to remove the shrubs that are in the way of the drop off zone. Finally TES is looking at improving the area immediately outside the school gates, i.e. on TES property, and, as soon soo as plans are confirmed, I’ll write to you to let you know what is happening.
