OVERCOMING CHALLENGES MAKES LIFE A WORTHWHILE WHILE ADVENTURE – LAILAH GIFTY AKITA
Searching for the meaning in the book! by Mr. Peter Sloan Today we were delighted to welcome Dr. Peiling Hu for her re-arranged visit to school. Dr.Hu is teaching English and Contemporary American Literature in the Department of English at Tunghai University in Taichung. However, today our special interest was in her role as a translator of children’s books. Dr. Hu first translated the children’s book ‘Strictly No Elephants’ and also the latest instalment of the best selling illustrated series Diary of A Wimpy Kid. Dr. Hu spoke with children in Years 1, 2, 3 and 5, and also held a session for parents to hear her talk about her work as a translator and to share the importance of reading. While with the children she talked a little about her role as a translator, but a great deal about the meaning that we can get from books. She challenged her young audiences to really look behind the words and to think about the message of the book. This can be especially true with a picture book like ‘Strictly No Elephants’. Dr. Hu challenged our children to read critically and to look for the real meanings. For her adult audience, Dr. Hu highlighted ways that we, as parents, can support our children in their reading and how we can encourage and develop skills that will help our children in their
learning in school and throughout their lives. She challenged parents to inspire our children to search out the moral behind the story.

by Mrs. Suzanne Lovrincevic
This week saw the Year One students celebrate Fairy Tales. On Wednesday we invited Mr Sloan and Mr Millward into our rooms as mystery readers. The children thoroughly enjoyed seeing them and listening ng to 'The 3 Little Pigs', 'The 3 Billy Goats Gruff' and 'The Pirate House'. Thank you so much. On Thursday the fun continued as students
came to school dressed as Fairy Tale characters. The costumes were outstanding. Well done to all students and thank you yo to parents too. Throughout the morning, children participated in creative activities across the Year One classes. Make sure to look at their blog pages this week.

Festival Fun in Year 4
Issue21
by Miss Emma Thomas
Here in Year 4 this term we have been learning all about festivals from around the world as part of our ‘Festivals!’ topic. We have been so lucky to have some of our parents come in to school and share festivals which are special to them and their family.
Reception Trip
3
This week, we were lucky enough to have Mrs Bluhme, Cecilie’s Mum come and teach us (along with Cecilie and Magnus!) all about the Danish Fastelavn! We absolutely loved tasting the delicious Fastelavn bollers and learning new Danish songs. The star of the show was the chance to become come the cat king or queen by hitting down the barrel of treats first!

On Thursday, the Shark, Turtle, Jellyfish and Sea Lion classes enjoyed their trip to the Lin Liu-Hsin Puppet Theatre and Museum. We sat in a tiny, old theatre and were introduced to different puppets from around the world. We watched a traditional puppet show and the puppeteer showed us how he moved his hands to do clever tricks. Then the lights turned off and we watched shadow puppets,
too! The helpful pful staff showed us around the museum. We looked at all the materials and work stations in the puppet making room, saw very old puppet clothes and we got to move a puppet with strings! As soon as we got back to school, we were excited to turn areas of the classroom into theatres. We may even start making our own puppets, as well as write and perform our own stories! A big thank you to all the parents that came with us.
