REMINDERS
Celebrations in Early Years! by Miss Sophie Hockey The Reception children have been very busy preparing for our Chinese New Year celebrations. We have built up our understanding of this special time of year by talking to our friends and family about different traditions. We were excited to welcome our friendly visitors, Ms Sulong and Ms Jill, to ask them questions about their memories of these times when they were the same age as us. We have enjoyed exploring the Story of Nian together. We have used and understood so many words to help us retell the story, as well as think about the movements and rhythms of Nian during our music lessons with Mrs Lin! Our fiddly fingers have been cutting, folding, rolling, painting and decorating different decorations for our classrooms. We have sorted and selected colours to make firecrackers, Nian masks, paper lanterns, firework art and good fortune play dough trees. Mrs Mullins has taught us how to make traditional tea. We have thought about the language used to follow and give instructions so that we can make it again. We have tried many different flavours!
Ms Gerber has taught us how to make dumplings and we invited the Nursery children over to help us make them – and eat them! The Nursery teachers needed some help to write their party food shopping list and we had many keen volunteers to write one for them. We are looking forward to some of our mummies reading traditional Chinese stories to us next week, too! We all wish you a Happy New Year from Reception.

Tribe Council Trip to the Ti-Hwei T Hwei Home by Mr. Corné Coetzee th
On Thursday 19 January, the tribe council took the money raised by the Reverse Christmas Tree to the TiTi Hwei ei home. All the children were extremely excited to visit the orphanage. When we arrived at the Ti-Hwei Hwei home we were given a warm welcome by the director of the home. We met a few of the children that are currently living there and had doughnuts and drinks together. A few tribe councilors even brought some used toys along and gave them to the children at the home. A big thank you to those tribe

councilors for your kindness and for leading by example. After that, we listened to the history of the home and then th we went for a tour around the home. Finally, some of the boys divided themselves into teams and we had a very exciting basketball match to round up our trip. I think it is very important for our children to realise the importance of giving as well as taking king time to reflect on their own lives and be thankful for everything they have. A special thank you to the tribe council that were on their best behaviour, r, all the adults that made our trip possible and all the parents who donated money towards our Reverse Rever Christmas Tree collection.

Thank you for everyone's support towards the Chinese Book Fair this week! It has been a great success. We’ve continued our cooperation with Caves Bookstore to arrange this event. They’ve prepared a wide ide range of Chinese books for our students suggested by the CLC team. During the CLC lessons,, teachers took students to choose a Chinese book and suggest the appropriate reading level to students. The teachers are promoting a good habit of reading and
motivating g them to read Chinese books. It has been clear to see that the students have really enjoyed the book fair and excited that they have more chance to read Chinese books.

Year 3’s Taipei Now and Then
by Ms. Jeni Wong
Beautiful sky, sunny day- What a great day for a trip to Taip Taipei City Hall and the Sun Yat-Sen Sen Memorial. The children had a great day finding out all about Taipei's history by starting off at the informative exhibition at Taipei City Hall. Here you could catch a glimpse of the city in it's past and future glory. A super su range of interactive activities- a great trip if you have time.

They then went onto the Sun Yat-Sen Yat Memorial to look at our city's amazing skyline. They found a quiet spot to contrast the old buildings with the new and using our observational drawing skills kills produce some careful sketches of what they could see. A fun trip there and back on the MRT, plenty of walking and many thanks to our super parent helpers!

At the beginning of the week, three students from the Dutch Section presented on Natural Disasters to Mr Millward, Mr Gamble, children from the Dutch Section and a new family to the school. This formed part of their Dutch programme and involved a dynamic presentation all in Dutch. All of the students, Noa and Millie from Year ear 6, and Benjamin from Year 4 did an outstanding job, using clear pronunciation and some

excellent presentation skills. Luckily Mr Gamble was able to use his Dutch lanaguage skills to ask the children some questions at the end. We are very fortunate at our ur school to have such diverse language across our school and it was a great way to celebrate the Dutch programme, De Oranje Dumpling.
