Eric Van Hove’s sculptures are hybrids of different cultural and social contexts through which the artist explores the aesthetic and metaphorical territory inbetween craft and capitalist production, regional and global. By blending artisanal work with mass-produced objects, Van Hove creates elaborated artworks embodying the contradictory nature of contemporary material and visual culture and its paradoxical socio-economic implications. D9T (Rachel’s Tribute) brings together Moroccan and Indonesian craftsmen to create a monumental tribute to the proPalestine activist Rachel Corrie. Killed in 2003 in the Gaza Strip by an Israeli bulldozer, Corrie became the subject of an international debate on human rights due to the disputed events that caused her death. The engine recreated by Van Hove replicates one of the armored Caterpillar bulldozers used by the Israel Defense Forces, the D9T commonly nicknamed “Teddy Bear” in Hebrew. Through the use of over forty different materials from all over the world, and carving a new aesthetic language of Afro-Asian solidarity, the artist attempts to provide a material reversal that aims to undo the violence and give new meaning to the capabilities of this object.
