4/20/2015 NORTHWESTERN SCHOOL DISTRICT MINUTES OF BOARD MEETING April 20, 2015 7:30 p.m. Nine members answered the roll call at the board meeting held on April 20, 2015 in the conference room at the District Office. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Joan Baxter. After the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent reflection, roll was called with the following board members present: Joan Baxter, Gary Bilek, Glen Black, Valerie Hoover via phone, Peggy Kemling, Shelly Rice, Kevin Saxton, Dick Sembower and Mark Swanson. Present from the administration were the following: Karen Downie, Superintendent; Paul Sachar, Secretary/Business Manager; Yvonne Teed, Director of Curriculum and Instruction; Dan Shreve, Northwestern High School principal; Dan Christensen, Northwestern High School assistant principal; Greg Lehman, Northwestern Middle School principal; Terry Trimble, Northwestern Elementary School principal; Kristen Rutkowski, Director of Special Education; Ron Peters, Maintenance Director. Attorney George Joseph was also in attendance. The following visitors were present: Debi Seneta, Zeke Seneta, Sandy and Roy Greenlee, Jordan Melchitzky, Sam and Cindy Ring, Courtney Ring, Kristine Wheeler, Vic Wheeler, Joe Wheeler, Bette Merritt, Isaac Merritt, Jeff Wolford, Chris and Elizabeth Haskins, Amber Frazier and others. RECOGNITION OF SCHEDULED VISITORS AND CORRESPONDENCE Courtney Ring and Joe Wheeler addressed the Board about an 8th grade book, The Secret Life of Bees. Kristine Wheeler also addressed the same issue. Correspondence from Joanna Lorance, regarding the above novel, was shared with the board. POSITIVE THINGS HAPPENING AT NORTHWESTERN – STUDENT PERSPECTIVE Northwestern High School Mock Trial Team- Jeff Wolford, Advisor with Eryn Pettis, Jacob Salis, Addie Griffey, Zeke Seneta, Denis Ristic Northwestern High School Academic Sports League-Chris & Elizabeth Haskins, Advisors with Kenzi Mundkowsky, McKenzie Craig, Jacob Salis, Samantha Miller, Will Driver, Eric Higgins, Becca Lewis, Ashley Troutman, Chad Spaulding, Karli Mosko RECOGNITION OF UNSCHEDULED VISITORS Several of the visitors listed above shared concerns about the pending approval of the 8th grade novel, The Secret Life of Bees.

It was moved by Kevin Saxton and seconded by Dick Sembower that the Treasurer’s report and other financial reports be filed for audit. VOICE VOTE: The ayes carried, 9-0-0. Erie County Technical School Report – Mr. Glen Black had no report. Northwest Tri-County I.U. #5 Report – Mrs. Shelly Rice shared that the agenda book had been given to Paul. Solicitor’s Report – Mr. George Joseph shared a summary that he had prepared about the procedures for a Board to approve a novel. He also reported that he was working on the easement for the signage and reviewing background checks. He closed by congratulating the Mock Trial team for their accomplishments this year. Superintendent’s Report – Dr. Karen Downie had nothing further to report. Secretary’s Report - Mr. Paul Sachar had nothing further to report. It was moved by Kevin Saxton and seconded by Shelly Rice that the written and oral reports be filed where apropos. VOICE VOTE: The ayes carried, 8-0-0. Mr. Black had stepped out at 8:43 p.m. and was not present for the vote.
