Trees have been an integral part of the city; some have been around since Mumbai was still Bombay. They have lend their names to places and acted as landmarks for ages. The city has some 318 species of trees half of which are exotic, brought in by the English plant lovers during early 19th century from other tropical countries to the city. Malabar Hill Tree Walk The original seven islands of Bombay consisted of 22 hills, and Malabar Hill was the highest point in the city area then, Malabar Hill used to be a densely forested area except for a few government residences. Even after the urbanization area still has has maintained its greenery, the and ecosystem. Even today, the long stretch of Malabar Hill complex hosts a variety of common as well as rare species of flora. Kanheri Upper Trail at Sanjay Gandhi National Park A gradual climb through the wooded forest of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). November is the perfect time to see Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Shikra, Grey Junglefowl, and Indian Peafowl. The trail leads to the rocky, grass and Euphorbia strewn plateau near, Kanheri Caves, which is excellent for viewing raptors like Crested Serpent Eagle, soaring on thermals, and spectacular views of the National Park. At the end of the trail, one can visit the ancient Kanheri caves, which date back to around 2,100 years. Carved out of volcanic rocks, there are around 109 caves. The caves and surrounding structures also harbour good biodiversity. Grade: Easy to Moderate Charges: Rs. 900/- for members and Rs. 1,000/- for others. Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated to the north of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), and forms a corridor for animals moving between SGNP and Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary. This trail is lined with dense mixed deciduous forest. During this season one can see birds like Rufous Treepie, White Wagtail, Ashy Drongo, Yellow-eyed Babbler, Crested Serpent Eagle, Brown-headed Barbet, Shikra, and Verditer Flycatcher. Bat and Bird Trail at Elephanta Island Situated off the south-east shore of the city, Elephanta Island, is a good birding location. During this time if you are lucky you can see a few Brown-headed Gull and Black-headed Gull in their breeding plumage flying alongside boats to the island. Other birds like the Indian Grey Hornbill, Common Iora, Spot-billed Duck, Little Grebe, and White-bellied Sea Eagle can be spotted here. BNHS also gives you an opportunity to learn more about the only flying mammal on this Island. Explore the caves with an expert in search of bat roosts of the Greater Asiatic Yellow House Bat and Leaf-nose Bat. Grade: Moderate (Initially, 100 steps climb to reach the top, this could be a bit strenuous) Charges: Rs. 600/- for members and Rs. 700/- for others (Charges include boat ticket, entry ticket to Elephanta Island and BNHS expertise). MARINE CAMP AT LAKSHADWEEP - Tinnakara Island

Lakshadweep  is a group of  islands, 200–440 km off the southwest coast of India. These  islands  form the smallest union territory of the country. The Lakshadweep region has about 600 species of fish, 78 species of coral, and over 100 species of other marine invertebrates. This is the perfect opportunity to explore the fascinating marine life underwater. This year BNHS will be visiting the Tinnakara Island. Part of the Bangaram atoll, the charming isolated Thinnakara Island shares the same lagoon with the Bangaram Island. You need not worry if you do not know swimming; you can still enjoy the deep blue sea and move among the amazing corals, fishes, shells, shrimps and crabs. Most of the snorkeling will be in waistdeep coral lagoons. Kaziranga National Park – a World Heritage Site and home to 65% of the world population of the One-horned

Rhinoceros. Herds of Barasingha, Hog Deer and Wild Buffalo are seen in the marshes. Rhinos browse unconcernedly as visitors

pass by and occasionally a herd of elephants or wild boar is also sighted. One of the best places in India to see Pied Harrier and other raptors like Crested Serpent-eagle, Pallas’s Fish-eagle, and Grey-headed Fish-eagle, which can be seen circling overhead.

Gibbon Sanctuary – now known as the Hoolongapar Gibbon Sanctuary is one of the best places to see India’s only

primate the Endangered Western Hoolock Gibbon, the Sanctuary is also a good place to see other threatened primates like Near Threatened Assamese Macaque, Vulnerable Capped Langur, Stump-tailed Macaque and Northern Pig-tailed Macaque. It is also good for birdwatching with over 200 species (e.g. Purple Woodpigeon, Rufous-bellied Niltava, Red-headed Trogon, and Long-tailed Sibia) recorded from the sanctuary.

Nameri National Park is a birder’s paradise and more than 300 species of birds have been recorded here – four

species of Hornbills like Great, Wreathed, Oriental Pied, and Rufous-necked Hornbill can be sen here. Other birds like Palechinned and Little Pied Flycatcher, Green-billed Malkoha, Great Thick-knee, Blue-throated, Lineated and Blue-eared Barbet, Red-breasted Parakeet, Orange-bellied and Gold-fronted Leafbird, Ibisbill, Long-tailed and Silver-breasted Broadbill, Small Niltava, Black Baza and the elusive White-winged Duck are also seen.

April, 2018 GREAT HIMALAYAN NATIONAL PARK The Great Himalayan National Park is carved out of the splendid mountain terrain of Kullu district, and is the largest protected area in Himachal Pradesh. The secluded Tirthan valley harbours a variety of wildlife common to this area – wild mountain goats like the Bharal, Goral and Serow, the Himalayan Brown Bear, and predators like the Leopard and the very rare Snow Leopard. Birds like Himalayan Pied Kingfisher, Brown Dipper, Bearded Vulture, and Himalayan Parakeet can be seen during the trek. Grade: Moderate, three day hike from Ecozone into Park, daily 8–10 km gradual gradient walk among the hill forests taking about 5 –7 hrs. Date: 21st – 27th April, 2018 (ex Delhi). May, 2018 CORBETT NATIONAL PARK & NAINITAL (SATTAL, BHIMTAL & PANGOT) Corbett National Park was created in 1936, the first wildlife park of India. Besides Tiger and Asian Elephant, the

area is known for a large number of sub-Himalayan species and in the summer an equally large number of breeding migrants

that come from north Indian plains and peninsular India. We can see Great Hornbill, Himalayan Pied Kingfisher, Tawny Fish Owl, Collared Falconet, both Pallas’s and Lesser Fish-eagles, Hooded Pitta, Grey Treepie, White-crested Laughingthrush, Dollarbird, and Rusty-cheeked Scimitar Babbler.

Pangot, Sattal, and Bhimtal area is known as a bird watcher’s paradise, and the “Nainital Hills” live up to their

name with more than 200 species seen here. Sattal is also a photographer’s paradise. One can see three types of pheasants namely Cheer, Koklas and Kalij Pheasant, as well as Scaly-bellied Woodpecker, Long-billed Ground-thrush, Red-headed Laughingthrush, Spotted Laughingthrush, Great Barbet, Chestnut-bellied Rock-thrush, Lammergeier, Red-billed Blue Magpie, Spot-winged Tit, Black-lored Tit, Striated Prinia, Red-billed Leiothrix, Blue-winged Minla, Streak-breasted Scimitar Babbler, Lesser Yellownape, Spotted Forktail, Rufous Sibia, and Yellow-breasted Greenfinch.

June, 2018 AMBOLI – LAND OF THE FLYING FROG Nestled at the crest of the Western Ghats at a height of above 2,000 feet, Amboli is the last hill station in Maharashtra before the coastal highlands of Goa. Misty weather, rejuvenating rain, cool climate, and lush evergreen forest form the perfect setting for reptiles and amphibians. It is also one of the best places to see the Malabar Gliding Frog. The forest here reverberates with the calls of various frogs and toads in colourful and loud display, singing in beautiful synchronisation to attract their lady love. Amboli is part of a Biodiversity Hotspot and we can see amphibians and reptiles like Fungoid Frog, Bi-coloured Frog, Amboli Bush-frog, Amboli Toad, Beddome’s Cat Snake, Ceylon Cat Snake, Green Vine Snake, Malabar Pit Viper, and various caecilians. July, 2018 VALLEY OF FLOWERS Western Himalaya is well-known for its meadows of diverse alpine flowers and outstanding natural beauty. The beauty of Valley of Flowers has been acknowledged by renowned mountaineers and botanists. Its gentle landscapes, breathtaking beautiful meadows of alpine flowers and remoteness make the journey to this valley an enchanting experience. One can see gorgeous flowers like the Brahma Kamal, Blue Poppy, Brook Anemone, and Forget-me-not. Also birds like White-capped RiverChat, Plumbeous Water-redstart, Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, and Blue Whistling-thrush can be seen along the way. August, 2018 LAHAUL-SPITI & Pin Valley National Park The desolate northern and eastern tracts of Himachal Pradesh are among the most spectacular and sparsely populated regions on Earth. The Spiti River is joined by the Pin River, flowing out of a wind-scoured but beautiful valley from the heights of the Great Himalayan Range. This forms the Pin Valley National Park, with its snow-laden slopes is a refuge for one of the world’s most threatened and elusive animals, the Snow Leopard. The Park is also home to Siberian Ibex and Tibetan Wolf. INTERNATIONAL CAMPS, 2018 September, 2018 African Safari – Kenya

Once again the Bombay Natural History Society brings you the African Safari, Kenya, with its rich diversity of mammals and birds, a dream trip for nature lovers. Places of Visit: Samburu National Reserve, Aberdare National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Masai Mara National Reserve.

Samburu National Reserve: Most tourists visiting Kenya do not get the opportunity to cross the Equator to visit

the Samburu National Park to see the unique wildlife of North Kenya. Samburu has some very different animals like Oryx, Gerenuk or Giraffe Gazelle, Grevy’s Zebra, and Reticulated Giraffe unique to this reserve and not seen in Southern Kenya.

Aberdare National Park:

A birdwatcher’s paradise, Aberdare National Park is part of the Aberdare Mountain

Range in Central Kenya. The Park offers Moorlands, Bamboo forest and rainforest at lower altitudes. One can see animals like the Critically Endangered Mountain Bongo, Bushbuck, African Wild Dog, and Giant Forest Hog. Birds like Jackson’s Widowbird, Bar-tailed Trogon, Golden-winged Sunbird, Scarlet-tufted Sunbird, Silver-cheeked Hornbill, endemic Aberdare Cisticola, and African Goshawk are also seen.

Lake Nakuru National Park: Situated in the famous Rift Valley, it attracts thousands of flamingos and pelicans, the forest around the lake is home to the rare and Critically Endangered Eastern Black Rhinoceros and Near Threatened Southern White Rhinoceros.

Masai Mara National Reserve: Experience the thrill of watching the world’s largest land migration with around

a million wildebeest and zebras make their way into Masai Mara from Serengeti. The spectacle of the Great Migration is something every nature lover should experience.

During the camp you can see a whole array of animals like East African Lion, the fastest land mammal Cheetah, three kinds of giraffe Reticulated, Rothschild’s, and the tallest Masai Giraffe; Hook-lipped and Square-lipped Rhinoceros; Cape Buffalo, Black-and-white Colobus, Spotted Hyena; Grevy’s and Burchell’s Zebra; African Elephant, Thomson’s Gazelle, Hartebeest, Dik-dik, Hippopotamus, Leopard, and the Nile Crocodile. Besides these one can see the largest birds: the Somali and Common Ostrich, Purple Grenadier, Blue-nape Mousebird, Red-cheeked Cordon-bleu, Secretary bird, Superb Starling, Hamercop, Bateleur, White-breasted Go-away-bird, Lilac-breasted Roller; Vulturine and Helmeted Guineafowl; Red-billed, Yellow-billed, Von der Decken’s, Black-and-White Casqued and Southern Ground Hornbills; Black-bellied, White-bellied, Buff-crested, and Kori Bustards, Malachite Kingfisher and many more.
