Daily Police Log Teen Safety Voice Over IP

Police Daily Activity Did you know that you can look up the Police Daily Activity Log on our website? Just go to www.cob.org/police and look on the right hand side. There will be a link called “Police Daily Activity.” From there you can look up a certain date or range of dates to find out what types of calls the police are responding to. You are also able to access a brief description of the call. If an arrest was made the arrestee’s name will be printed if they are over 18. Please keep in mind that not all calls will be loaded into the database immediately. If the officer who took the report is busy, nonemergent reports may not be completed and therefore downloaded for a day or two. This is a good tool to use if you are curious why the police were parked in your neighborhood or if you are tracking crime on your block.

Basic Safety For Your Teens This Summer As summer approaches and your kids are outside more and out with friends take that extra minute to teach them some “street smarts” so they can be safe. ~Strolling—Day and Night. Try to walk places with your friends rather than alone. Stick to well-lighted, well-traveled streets. Avoid shortcuts through wooded areas, parking lots, or alleys. Take the safest route to and from schools, stores, or your friends’ houses. ~Know where to go for help if you need it.

~Don’t display your cash or any other inviting targets like cell phones, hand-held electronic games, or expensive jewelry and clothing. Carry your backpack or purse close to your body and keep it closed. Just carrying a wallet? Put it inside your coat or front pants pocket, not in your back pocket or in your backpack.

~Have to work late? Make sure there are others in the building and that someone— a supervisor or security guard— will wait with you for your ride or walk you to your car or bus stop. Be alert in the neighborhood. Call police or tell an adult about anything you see that seems suspicious.

Voice Over IP Calls to 911 Do you have phone coverage through your computer’s Broadband, DSL or Cable Line (Voice Over Internet Protocol)? If so, you may want to check to make sure you have enhanced 911 service. Without the enhanced service, your 911 call may go through to the wrong 911 center, may go through to a non-emergent 911 number and therefore not be given the same priority as a 911 call or your name, address and callback phone number may not be provided to the answering center. Recently our local dispatch center took a 911 call from a lady who needed help and called using Voice Over IP. The address and phone number that popped up were local. Precious minutes went by before the dispatcher realized she was calling from Florida. The woman had forgotten to change her address with her internet company when she moved. If you have Voice Over IP or are thinking about getting it be sure to call your service provider and ask the following: 1)

Will enhanced 911 work from this phone?

2)

Will my name, address and call back number be automatically provided to the 911 center? Is it the right one?

3)

Will my 911 call be sent to the answering center that responds to emergency calls in my community (Make sure it is not Border Patrol or State Patrol).

Bellingham Municipal Code– So What Really Is The Law Anyway? 7.12.060 - Keeping Animals In The City - General Regulations - Penalty A. Any person being the owner or entitled to the possession of any animal of the species of horse, mule, ass, cattle, sheep, goat, domesticated fowl and exotic animals (except domesticated fowl maintained in a residence), including but not limited to, duck, chicken, goose, turkey or peafowl or swine of any kind, shall be permitted to keep the same within the limits of the City except as the same is now or may be hereafter forbidden by ordinance, by securely confining the same in a stable or other building; or an enclosure surrounded by a secure, well-built fence of sufficient height and strength to confine such animal therein; or the same may be securely staked out in a vacant lot in such manner that it cannot get upon any street, alley, or other public place within the City provided that the same is so confined or staked out as to effectively prevent it getting within 50' of any dwelling or other building in which persons work or are accustomed to be, or near enough to the property of another to do any damage thereto or commit any nuisance thereupon; and provided, further, that any such animal shall be considered as running at large when it breaks away from its fastenings or is herded or permitted to feed upon any of the streets, alleys or other public places of the City.

Emergency Preparedness~ Fire Extinguishers When choosing a fire extinguisher look for symbols or the letters A, B and C to determine which fire class(es) the extinguisher will put out. Class A extinguishers put out fires fueled by wood, paper, cloth, rubber and most plastics. Class B extinguishes flammable liquids, such as gasoline, oil and grease. Class C is for wiring, appliance and electrical fires. Usually the best solution is to purchase an ABC fire extinguisher that covers all of the above. Next you will need to choose a size. Obviously the more chemical that is in the canister the heavier it will be so make sure everybody in your family is able to lift the extinguisher without hurting themselves. You will also need to decide between refillable ones with a metal valve and disposable ones with a plastic valve. Refillable ones are initially more expensive but refilling them is cheaper than buying a new disposable one. Just make sure to watch the pressure gauge so you know when to refill the canister! How many fire extinguishers will you need in your house? That is up to you but the National Fire Protection Association recommends one per floor.
