:-)

As promised, here is the interview for the french Amiga magazine 'PLANET mag'. The questions are sometimes long, but the answers can be shorter ;) (and don't hesitate to argue if necessary). Don't forget this is your first interview for a french paper magazine and that all the french Amigans are waiting for it too... :) THE INTERVIEW : " PLANET: Bill, first some private information : can you introduce you ? your age, family, children, hobbies,... :) Bill McEwen >> Name William Wallace McEwen XVI - Born in Seattle Washington on June 3rd, 1962. I have one son William Wallace McEwen XVII who is 5 years old, my Wife Trish, and Two daughters Ashley age 13, and Carolann age 11. I enjoy riding my horses, motorcycle, snow skiing, flying, and playing with my son. PLANET: When did you see an Amiga computer for the first time and what had

been your first feeling ? Did you or do you own a classic Amiga yourself ? (which one ?) Bill McEwen: 1987 was the first time I saw and Amiga. My initial response was WOW!. I did not own an Amiga until 1998 when I joined Gateway.

PLANET: What is an 'Amigan' for you, and the 'Amiga's Spirit' ? Are you an 'Amigan' ? :) Bill McEwen: An Amigan to me is any individual who sees the value, experience, love for the empowerment of an individual with this amazing machine. The Amiga Spirit permeates an individual. I have several of these people that I am priviledged enough to work with everyday. An individual who really showed me this Amiga Spirit was Bob Cosby. I will leave the answer about whether or not I am an Amigan to the community. It is really up to them.

PLANET: What was your 'professional way' (job) before Gateway ? and some words about your job, projects, in Gateway... Bill McEwen: Before Gateway I was heavily involved with internet/communication products. Both for Adults, and Childrem. a couple of years with a multi-platform database product.

I also had

While at Gateway my job was based around the investigation, and strategy for entering the marketplace with a new Operating System, and how best to empower the community to take advantage of the new computing changes that were coming.

PLANET: What feelings have you about your Gateway time ? Do you believe that they would have really made something for Amiga if they had wanted ? or they had never believed in Amiga ? Bill McEwen: I absolutley believed that we were going to build something. Otherwise there was no reason to be there. I especially believe that Ted Wait really saw the value in Amiga, and the opporunity that it could provide to Gateway for a very solid future.

PLANET: When, you, Fleecy and others, did you say : "Gateway won't do something ! If we don't try ourselves, Amiga will be out !" ? (and too much wasted time !...) Bill McEwen: Fleecy and I met for the first time at the Airport in Minneapolis. He was sitting down reading a book about Java. I walked up to him, and said you must be Fleecy becuase nobody else on thier way to South Dakota would be reading a book about Java. We spent the next several hous discussing what we beleived to be the next wave in computing, and how we could best help foster this new revolution, and make it happen. When he was let go, we continued to stay in almost daily contact trying to determine how we could work together, even while at Gateway. In August when

I was let go, it was time to make a move together, and we did.

PLANET: What were your real motivations to do something for the Amiga ? Bill McEwen: To make the that the Amiga community platform, and what would outdated tools, etc, are world will wish they had

dream that Fleecy and I had a reality. I beleive offers the greatest asset to any computing be labeled as slow machines, and small hard drives, actually an amazing strength that the rest of the while we move forward and change computing forever.

That is my motivation to take the word computing out of the whole venacular, and to enable and empower people to use these devices to make thier lives easier, and open up the opporunity of more time for themselves and families while enjoying the experience. To create an environment that embraces the user, as opposed to forcing the user to do things the way the programmers thinks that it should happen.

PLANET: Were the negotiations of repurchase with Gateway easier than you thought, or very difficult ? Bill McEwen: work with.

The people that I worked with at Gateway were wonderful to

PLANET: Can you give us some information about the financing of this repurchase ? only Banks, personal, or investment of other (computer, software,...) Companies ? Is Amiga Inc. really independent ? Bill McEwen: Our initial finding came form two sources - Invisible Hand LLC in New York, and Net Ventures BV in the Netherlands. And yes, we are really independent.

PLANET: So, with your purchase Amiga is indepedent again and can depend only on your team. What big challenge ! But after too many years of disappointment, that's the last chance now. Do you realize if you fail in your project, Amiga will really die this time ? (who would like to buy it after ?...) Bill McEwen: We realize the magnatude of the task and the plan before us, and we look forward to delivering. Since failure is not an option Amiga will not die. As far as someone purchasing us they better have a huge amount of money, because we have no plans of anything but success.

PLANET: Your objective has been immediately to give again a place to Amiga in the computer world. For that, your idea (with Tao-Group) is a revolutionary environment not dependent of the hardware (for the 'Digital Convergence'). An other big challenge ! :) For you that's the only solution. But you must renounce the classic, original and genius, AmigaOS. Don't you think that's a big loss and that this environment must survive ? Bill McEwen: There is no renouncement of the current Amiga system.

I

believe that it will continue for many years, that is why we have teamed up again with Haage and Partner for OS 3.9. However in order to really bablet o move forward and make some exciting things happen and offer value to the community and OEM's we know that a re-write of the AmigaOS is not a good option. It would take to long, and offer too little. In order to take over the next level of computing we bust be hardware agnostic, and OS independent. Amiga must be the user experience that everyone will use to view their content from anywhere on anydevice.

PLANET: But don't you think with new performant hardware, from today, with manufacturer partners (like Eyetech Group) and with the best marketing, the Classic Amiga couldn't have got success again in the existing computer world ? Bill McEwen: No I do not. In order to really succeed and win, we must offer a new future. Not only for our Amigan's today, but for the millions of users that will join us tomorrow.

PLANET: By this choice, many Amigans say that you want to use only the name and the prestige of the Amiga to realize your project with Tao-Group. They also say that the AmigaOne won't be an Amiga ! It's only a PC because it has got PC hardware. What do you reply to them ? In what will the AmigaOne be an Amiga ? Bill McEwen: I hear these statements, and I ask them what is an Amiga? The answer I often hear in return is software working with hardware together with a small footprint and incredible performance. The ability to run the applications that they love and enjoy without change. This is what we are doing. We also are porting many parts of the current OS to the new platform and developers are going to enjoy developing on the new platform. So I would ask the community, so how is the Amiga that we are building, not the Amiga that they are looking for?

PLANET: Since January you declared that no new Classic Amiga will be produced (only a software emulator in the new AmigaOS/Elate). But last 21th October, by much surprise and to the great delight of the Amigans, you announced the new AmigaOne PPC 1200 and 4000 to contribute to the transition of the final AmigaOne. In fact, did you wait for the best proposition of a partner since the beginning ? or did your opinion change after this very interesting proposition of Eyetech (and Bplan) and the great wishes of all the Amiga Community ? Bill McEwen: It was the later. :-).

I never said that I could not change my mind

PLANET: These AmigaOne PPC 1200/4000 are really new Amigas, the first for 6 years, by complete cards for Eyetech and even a complete computer for Bplan, aren't they ? Could you present these two companies, especially

Bplan ? (many know Eyetech but less Bplan...) Bill McEwen: Yes this is true. There will be more links and information on our web site and I would encourage people to look there for more information. Bplan people are well known to the community.

PLANET: They will be available in Q1 2001 with the new OS 3.9 especially for them (available in December 2000). They should propose what all the Amigans have waited for many years : a new hardware with an AmigaOS running full on it (and without always by the 68k). Don't you think that the Community will support more this solution of transition, which will save the Classic AmigaOS, than the final AmigaOne with the new AmigaDE/Elate (OS 4.0) ? Bill McEwen: I really can not comment on this question at this time. offer a more clear answer later. Sorry.

I will

PLANET: Interesting hardware has been produced on Classic Amiga for some years (graphic cards, PPC cards,...), which has also contributed to the survival of the Amiga. But the repeated problems for the last months are always the very little of units, so the too much expensive prices and the delays or the renunciations ! To change that, how many AmigaOne PPC 1200/4000 will be produced first ? (we already know their prices ;) Will the two Eyetech and Bplan be able to produce these quantities with quality ? (and not only 100 or 1000 units ! ;) Which guarantees have they given to you ? Bill McEwen: I can not talk about the contracts that we have with these companies. I can only say that we are not going to tie our name to people who can not, or will not deliver quality products at competitive prices.

PLANET: In a year, the new AmigaDE on the AmigaOne could be really a revolutionary environment. But will you be able to provide all the computer users around the world with the best promotion and the best publicity ? Will you contact all the medias (press, TV,... :) ? Bill McEwen: Wait and see what we have planned. When you go into battle it is never wise to fire all your shots too early. It is always better to aim strategicaly and when they believe that this all that they will see from you, you begin fire in numerous directions hitting as many targets as possible. In using this strategy you draw them out and into your fire.

PLANET: If this AmigaDE/Elate is really 'independent' of the hardware, it could be a selling success with a good marketing and much software (!) But why to buy an AmigaOne computer ? (it's only a clone of a PC in hardware) And you say yourself : Amiga Inc. is now only a software company (like Microsoft). So, won't your project be only a software ? Bill McEwen: In order to have success it is always better to offer a complete solution where our software is optimized for the hardware, hence the AmigaOne series of products. And yes AmigaDE is independent of the hardware. Write once run many is a reality, now.

PLANET: Why will the computer users choice this new OS near the classic Windows, Linux,... which have already a lot of softwares ? and why to choice a too recent (revolutionary) OS with too few software, if I have already many (expensive) softwares on my old and confirmed Windows ? Bill McEwen: There are many new titles in development, and with the consumer as our focus y will find that the types products that are coming out will appeal to many OEM's.

PLANET: In the past, the power of Amiga had been superior by using 100% of its microprocessors and its chips directly in assembler. Technically, how will the AmigaDE/Elate be able to use 100% of the hardware (especially the microprocessor), if it will have to do concessions to be 'compatible' with other hardwares (and other microprocessors) ? Bill McEwen: How many operating systems that you know of can play a driving game on a 3 mips chip?

PLANET: In the past, Amiga was a success with its great Games. It has got a game computer image. Don't you think that this image could be a problem for the new Amiga ? Bill McEwen: Not at all. Games take up more resources on a computer and show off the power and flexibility of a system. Great games for Amiga open up many exciting opportunities for us. We also have 100's of other non game titles that are coming also.

PLANET: Can you give us news about the number of the first softwares on the AmigaOne/AmigaDE ? Always 150 titles with 50% of games ? Already concrete or still promises ? Can you give us some titles or names of (famous) editors ? Bill McEwen: There will be a revision to the list very soon. everyone will be pleased and excited.

I think that

PLANET: An environment independent of the hardware like AmigaDE/Elate is very interesting for the 'Digital Convergence' and all the new technologies : with such an environment these new technologies will be able to communicate easier together (and faster). Is your team of developers especially developing new applications for this great progress ? with partners ? Could you give us some examples of theses new applications ? Will they change our everyday life ? Bill McEwen: Yes, there are many amazing products that are being planned and that are in development for Amiga. And yes they will change your everyday life.

PLANET: Concerning the final AmigaOne computer, can you give us some news too : we know the 'zico' specification now, but have you already got

(famous) manufacturers ? which one ? Have the two Eyetech and Bplan companies already confirmed their interest and their wish ? Bill McEwen: There will be more systems from several other companies joining Eyetech and bPlan. Just keep watching.

PLANET: Can you give us a number of units for the first AmigaOne production ? What number would be serious for you ? In which countries will be sold the first AmigaOne computers : USA, Europe, Australia,... ? Bill McEwen: The AmigaOne will be available on a global basis at the time of ship. We are a global company with global interests. There is no favortism between one country or another. Although we could make France first :-).

PLANET: After the AmigaOne, will there be an AmigaTwo and Amiga3, Amiga4,... ? Bill McEwen: There is a whole family of reference designs that we are working on. There are many more products coming.

PLANET: Can you give us some numbers/results about the SDK V1.0 sellings and about the 'd'AMIGA Developer Workstation' sellings ? Have they already been bought by great developers/editors ? (some examples, please :) Bill McEwen: There are thousands and thousands of developers working with the current SDK and we are very pleased with the sales of the Windows version. In fact I think that the Windows version is going to outsell the LInux version, but in the end it does not really matter to us, as they are writing for AmigaDE, and we can run almost anywhere.

PLANET: Even if the Community is always very active, the situation of the Amiga in France has become especially catastrophic for the last years opposite to the Great Britain or the Germany :( no more professional paper magazines and only three 100% Amiga shops (they won't survive without new products...). The number of Amigans is estimated between 2000 and 4000 at the very most :( What can you say about this bad situation ? What commercial strategy will you deploy for the AmigaOne in this market ? Bill McEwen: made are kept globe. Amiga once again be

As new products are delivered, and the promises that we have Amiga will once again become a topic of coversation across the products will be available in France, and the community will proud.

PLANET: Can you insure us that in 1 or 2 years we will see AmigaDE near Windows and AmigaOne near PCs in all the biggest french shops ? That's the dream of all the french Amigans, Bill ! ;) Bill McEwen: The plan is that you will see Amiga products everywhere! Handhelds, Cell Phones, Set Top Boxes, Internet Terminals, Appliances, Game Machines, Servers, Graphics Workstations, Car Navigation Systems, and

Desktop Computers. We will not confine ourselves to a single hardware product strategy. The world of computing is changing, and the future is at hand. Amiga is the one company who is nimble enough, and capable of making this dream come true. PLANET: To conclude Bill, some words especially to the french Amigans, and... a scoop please ! :-) Bill McEwen: To our Family in France, remember your friends who have left for reasons of thier own, stand up and be proud that you were here at the beginning of the revolution that is about to begin. You were there when the first shots were fired, and you will still be standing when we take each and every country one at a time. The future truly is before us, and we will not fail. The first new Amiga product is scheduled to ship in December of this year from Meternet. This is targeted to sell for 399.00 and is an Internet Appliance running AmigaDE.

PLANET: Thank you very much Bill to have spared a few of your precious time to the french Amigans. And GOOD LUCK for your great project ! :) Bill McEwen: Thank you for this opporunity of sharing these ideas with you, and your readers.
