The senior footballers return to the championship fold against Erin's Isle at Parnell Park tonight (Wed). The last 16 clash had a 7.0 throw in and was the first installment of a double header that also involved St Vincent's and St Brigid's. The results of these matches will be published on the website and if possible on this newsletter in the late news column. The Senior Camogie team will face Fionnbarra on Saturday in Cabra at 5.30pm in the Shield Quarter finals. HANNAH CLAIMS HER ALL-IRELAND MEDAL WITH STYLE AND SKILL 16/9/06 Congratulations to the Dublin U-16 Ladies Football Team who comprehensively defeated Cork in the All-Ireland U-16 Ladies Football Final in Cashel, Co. Tipperary on Saturday 16th September. Dublin comprehensively shattered Cork‟s bid for the three-in-a-row All-Ireland U-16 titles and deprived the Rebels of a clean sweep of All-Ireland titles at underage level. Dublin dominated throughout and at half5
time they the score line read Dublin: 2-10 to Cork: 1-3. Dublin had 1- 4 on the scoreboard through Noelle Healy (St. Brigid‟s); Natalia Hyland (Ballyboden St. Enda‟s); Sinead Cullen (Skerries Harps)1-0 and Deborah Geraghty (Castleknock) 0-2, before Rhona Buckley opened Cork‟s account with a point from a free. That sparked a revival for Cork as Miss Buckley added 2 more points and Grace Kearney was at the end of a fine move to shoot to the net. That was as good as it got for Cork. Dublin again took over and scored 1-6 without reply. Dublin scored a goal and a point in the opening minute of the second-half. Two brilliant penalties were saved by the truly outstanding Dublin goalkeeper, HANNAH TYRELL (Round Tower Clondalkin) who denied Cork the goals they badly needed. Dublin certainly had their homework done with very effective curtailment of Cork‟s main threat Rhona Buckley. Nevertheless, Cork did score 7 points Dublin‟s two late goals were to be decisive in the end. Dublin‟s victory was sweet, having being on the receiving end of defeat at the hands of Cork in several previous All-Ireland Finals. Full-Time score: Dublin: 5-16; Cork: 1-10. Dublin‟s Captain Niamh McEvoy (St. Sylvester‟s), accompanied by her team and „Player of the Match‟: (Goalkeeper): Hannah Tyrrell (Round Tower Clondalkin) proudly brought the long-awaited All-Ireland Cup on its homeward journey to the Capital. A Garda escort accompanied the victorious Dubs back to a reception in Naomh Mearnog on Saturday night. The victorious team was lead by a piper, Michael Foy to the adulation of the waiting crowd, parents, friends and many supporters. “As Co. Board Chairperson, I am particularly proud of the achievements of this U-16 Team. Skill and determination throughout the championship ensured All-Ireland glory for this excellent group of extremely talented players. I salute the team: Dermot Connolly and his management team who inspired the team to victory over Cork. The
Rebels – truly well-seasoned campaigners, no strangers to All-Ireland success yielded to the superiority of the Dubs. Overall, the future prospects are promising, and I have no doubt whatever but many of these accomplished athletes will taste success again at Minor and feature on a Dublin Senior panel in the not too distant future” (John Hillery)
